Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: He Tried to Remove Me Quietly

He didn't attack me openly.

That would have been foolish.

Instead, he chose the cleanest weapon of all—

Procedure.

The email arrived just after noon.

Subject line: Board Review – Immediate Action Required

I read it once.

Then again.

A "temporary suspension" from decision‑making authority. Pending investigation. Signed by three board members.

Three.

Not enough.

But dangerous if I panicked.

I didn't.

I showed up to the emergency meeting exactly on time.

No rush. No anxiety.

They were already seated when I entered.

My husband didn't look at me.

My sister did.

Her eyes glittered with something close to hope.

That was her mistake.

"This is irregular," I said calmly, taking my seat. "A suspension requires majority consent."

The chairman cleared his throat. "This is a precaution."

"A precaution against what?" I asked. "Transparency?"

Silence.

I placed a folder on the table.

Inside were printed emails.

Signed approvals.

Timestamped access logs.

"I'd like to submit evidence of unauthorized procedural manipulation," I continued. "Including forged consent."

The color drained from my husband's face.

My sister's hand twitched.

"You went behind my back," he said.

"No," I replied. "You went behind the rules."

The room erupted in murmurs.

The chairman flipped through the documents, his frown deepening.

"These signatures," he said slowly, "need verification."

"They will," I replied. "I already requested it."

He stared at me. "When?"

"Before this meeting was scheduled."

My husband stood abruptly. "This is becoming a spectacle."

"Yes," I agreed. "And you hate being seen."

He turned to the board. "She's unstable. She's been provoking conflict."

I smiled softly. "Would you like me to share the recording?"

Every head snapped toward me.

"What recording?" my sister whispered.

"The one where he instructed staff to expedite my removal without due process," I said calmly.

Her breath hitched.

The chairman raised a hand. "Enough. This meeting is adjourned pending review."

My husband's jaw clenched as he sat back down.

The vote had failed.

Publicly.

Later, in the hallway, my sister grabbed my arm.

"You're destroying everything," she hissed.

I leaned in. "No. I'm exposing it."

She released me like I burned.

That night, my ally called.

"He's furious," he said. "And desperate."

I looked out over the city lights.

"Good," I replied. "Desperate men make irreversible mistakes."

Once, they removed me quietly.

This time—

They couldn't remove me at all.
