Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: Finding the Physical Evidence

As warm spring was getting closer, a soft breeze brought a little warmth as it passed through the streets and alleys of Fontaine.

Rei walked slowly along the clean streets.

On the way, many citizens recognized him and greeted him with excitement, one after another.

And he answered them politely, one by one.

Before long, Rei found a bench and sat down, quietly looking at the city view.

After a while, the young and beautiful reporter Charlotte walked up to him with quick steps.

"Vice Vice Captain Rei, may I interview you?" she asked sincerely.

The corners of Rei's mouth lifted a little, turning into a gentle smile. "Of course!"

After getting Rei's permission, Charlotte quickly took out her Kamera, fixed the angle, and took more than ten photos of Rei in a row—Click, click.

After taking the photos, she took out a pen and paper to get ready for the interview, then asked, "Vice Captain Rei, your injuries surely have not healed yet. Why are you in such a hurry to leave the hospital?"

Hearing this, Rei replied with a serious face, "Captain Charles, who took care of me so well, has become a criminal suspect. I must go around and work for his sake. Also, the Gardes now lack leadership and are slowly falling into chaos. For the stability and peace of Fontaine, I must step up at this moment!"

Charlotte wrote quickly, her eyes full of admiration.

Next, she asked, "Vice Captain Rei, about Captain Charles turning himself in, what do you think?"

Rei replied with full firmness, "I believe he clearly has strong reasons that left him no choice!"

Charlotte guessed carefully, "You mean...?"

Rei shook his head. "Before I have enough evidence, I will not make any wild guesses."

After that, Charlotte asked several more questions one after another before ending the interview.

Not long after she left, Rei also stood up calmly and left.

The identity of a "hero" was a useful tool for climbing higher, but it still needed to be managed well to show its value.

Coming here, not far from The Steambird newspaper office, to raise the chance of getting an interview was clearly a smart plan.

About half an hour later, Rei arrived in front of the House of the Hearth and reached out to press the doorbell.

The one who opened the door for him was still Lynette. She had the same cold expression as always. "Father is waiting for you in the study."

After saying that, she walked quickly to a corner of the room, squatted down with her delicate body, and fed a fluffy, cute kitten.

Rei gave a light chuckle and walked to the study.

Before long, he pushed open the study door and walked in.

Inside the room, Arlecchino sat straight at the desk, just like the last time they met.

Standing by her side was a handsome young man—it was none other than Lyney.

"Where are the clothes?" Rei asked directly.

Arlecchino waved her hand casually, and a gorgeous noble formal outfit appeared on the desk. A button was clearly missing from the collar.

Rei stepped forward. With a light move of his sleeve, he put the clothing into his System space.

This made both Arlecchino and Lyney freeze without meaning to, and a hint of surprise flashed in their eyes.

"Vice Vice Captain Rei, you are truly not an ordinary person!" Arlecchino came back to herself at once and said.

Rei smiled faintly. "So, have the House of the Hearth seek refuge with me a bit sooner!"

Arlecchino glanced at him. "If you can take one move from me, I will let the House of the Hearth seek refuge with you. Want to try?"

Of course, Rei would not do something so stupid as asking to be beaten. He waved his hand. "I still have business. See you later!"

After saying that, he turned and left in a cool way.

Not far after he walked out the door, Rei saw a very interesting scene.

He saw Lynette squatting down lightly, talking with the kitten.

She copied the cat's cry and answered with "Meow, meow," and the kitten seemed to understand her, sometimes letting out "Meow, meow" sounds back.

While she was busy talking with the kitten, Lynette quickly felt someone looking at her.

She turned her head fast, and her eyes met Rei's exactly.

A hint of shy anger flashed in her eyes, and she glared at Rei.

Rei spread his hands and shrugged, showing he did nothing wrong.

Lynette ignored him, picked up the kitten, and left his view.

Rei shook his head a little and kept walking forward.

Inside the study, Arlecchino turned to look at Lyney. Her strong gaze showed a hint of softness. "Lyney, I plan to have you and Lynette join the Gardes."

Lyney was a little shocked. "Father, you want us to go...?"

"Help him with all your strength. If nothing goes wrong, he will stand at the top of power in Fontaine," Arlecchino said, looking far away.

"But... Vice Captain Rei in the end has a flaw," Lyney said after a short pause.

Arlecchino gave a faint smile. "For him, fixing this flaw is as easy as lifting a hand."

After leaving the House of the Hearth, Rei went to the small restaurant he often visited.

This time, the owner's service attitude had changed completely.

Not only did he give a whole table of rich food, but he also gave Rei a lottery ticket that was sure to win one hundred thousand Mora.

In Fontaine, the law had very strict rules about corruption among public officials.

But as the saying goes, "Where there is a policy from above, there is a countermeasure from below." This kind of lottery ticket was a way to use loopholes.

Normally, as long as the amount was not too big, everyone would pretend not to see it.

Rei only tasted the food; he did not take that lottery ticket.

After enjoying this rich meal, he stood up and went to Chioriya Boutique.

After fifteen minutes of walking, Rei gently pushed open the shop door and walked inside.

At this moment, Chiori was bent over the workbench. Her slim, pale fingers moved skillfully with the fabric as she focused fully on cutting the clothes.

When she turned a little to the side, her tight kimono showed her graceful curves. As she cut, they showed and hid, making it hard for someone to look away.

Wife.

After quite a while, Chiori finally stopped what she was doing and turned her head.

When she saw Rei staring at her in a daze, she could not help smiling beautifully, like many peach blossoms blooming, bright and charming.

"Vice Captain Rei, how do you have time to grace my humble shop with your presence today?" Chiori asked softly, with a hint of teasing in her voice.

Only then did Rei come back to himself and realize he had lost control.

He gave an awkward light cough, then took out that outfit from his System space. "I have found the clothes."

Chiori took one look and confirmed it was the outfit she had made for Olev. "When do you plan to send Olev to the Fortress of Meropide?"

"Wait until Charles's trial ends. When darkness covers everything, the Knight of Justice will swing the Holy Sword and bring light. That kind of show will be more popular!"

"I have to say, you really do understand the people of Fontaine."
