Chapter 113 - CHAPTER 114: BROTHERLY BONDS

CHAPTER 114: BROTHERLY BONDS

The forest rustled with the sounds of wildlife and the distant call of birds. Satoru moved through the trees at a leisurely pace, following the chaotic trail left by two very energetic boys.

Ahead, he heard the sounds of a struggle—growling, shouting, the thud of bodies moving through underbrush. His Six Eyes painted a clear picture without needing to see: two small life forces, one much larger beast, and the unmistakable tension of a confrontation.

He quickened his pace slightly.

Ace and Luffy stood back-to-back, water pipes raised, facing down a massive black bear. The creature towered over them, easily three times their size, its fur bristling as it roared—a sound that shook leaves from the nearby trees.

"Same as before, Luffy," Ace said, his voice low and steady despite the danger. "You left, I right. Flank it."

"Got it!" Luffy's grin was wide, utterly unafraid.

This wasn't their first bear. It wouldn't be their last. The mountains around Dadan's hideout were full of dangerous wildlife, and every encounter was a lesson learned in blood and bruises. But they were getting better. Stronger. Faster.

The bear charged.

And then—

A figure appeared between them and the beast, materializing out of thin air directly in the bear's path.

"DANGER! MOVE!" Ace screamed, his eyes going wide.

The figure turned. White hair. Black blindfold. That infuriating smile.

"Huh?" Satoru looked over his shoulder at the charging bear, then back at the boys. "Oh. This guy?"

The bear was barely a meter away, claws extended, jaws open—

Satoru raised one hand.

A flicker of pressure, invisible but immense, washed over the creature.

The bear's claws dug into the earth. It skidded to a halt so fast its back legs almost flipped over its head. Its eyes, once filled with predatory rage, now held only primal terror. With a whimper that seemed utterly wrong for its size, it flattened itself against the ground, trembling uncontrollably.

"What... what just happened?" Ace stared, his water pipe forgotten at his side.

Luffy's jaw had dropped so far it was practically on the ground.

Satoru patted the bear's head—the creature flinched but didn't dare move—and said casually, "Go on. Play somewhere else."

The pressure vanished. The bear was on its feet and gone in an instant, crashing through the underbrush at speeds that would have impressed a racehorse.

Silence.

Then Ace's face contorted with anger. He marched up to Satoru, water pipe raised in a way that was clearly meant to be threatening but mostly just looked adorable given the height difference. "Hey! Who are you?! You scared away our prey!"

Satoru looked down at the freckled boy, and a familiar mischievous impulse rose in his chest. Oh, this is going to be fun.

"Are you," he said slowly, deliberately, "the son of Gol D. Roger?"

Ace froze.

The anger on his face didn't vanish—it intensified, mixed now with shock and something darker. His grip on the pipe tightened until his knuckles went white. "Who... who are you?" His voice had dropped, lost its childish bravado, become something harder.

Satoru's smile didn't waver. "Me? I'm your brother."

"Brother?" Ace's eyes widened. For one horrible moment, he actually considered it. Another son of that man? Another—

"SATORU!"

The scream of pure joy shattered the tension. Luffy launched himself at Satoru like a rubber cannonball, wrapping around him in a familiar hold.

Satoru caught him easily, laughing. "Yo, Luffy. Long time no see. I'm surprised you remembered me."

"Remember you?! You're my brother! How could I forget my brother?!" Luffy's grin was so wide it threatened to split his face. "But you're bigger! And your clothes are different! And you have that thing on your eyes! And—"

"You haven't changed a bit," Satoru interrupted, setting him down.

Ace stood frozen, watching this exchange with confusion slowly replacing his earlier suspicion. "Luffy... you know this guy?"

"Know him?!" Luffy grabbed Ace's arm and dragged him forward. "This is Satoru! The really strong brother I told you about! The one I could never beat!"

Ace's eyes narrowed again. "So you're Luffy's brother."

"That's right." Satoru's grin returned to its mischievous form. "And since you're also Luffy's brother, that makes you my brother too."

"That's not how it works!" Ace protested.

"Why not? Luffy's our connection. He's your brother. He's my brother. Therefore, we're brothers."

Ace opened his mouth to argue, but found he couldn't actually find a flaw in the logic. Which only made him angrier. "That's—you can't just—that's not—"

"Also," Satoru added, "my strength is greater than yours. So I'm the older brother."

"WHAT?! How do you figure that?!"

"In any group of brothers, the strongest is the oldest. Basic hierarchy."

"That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard!"

"Is it? Then prove me wrong. Beat me in a fight."

Ace's eyes blazed. "You're ON!"

Luffy, who had been watching this exchange with the innocent enjoyment of someone witnessing a particularly entertaining play, suddenly remembered something important. "Oh yeah! Satoru's really strong, Ace. You should probably—"

"I don't care how strong he is!" Ace dropped into a fighting stance, water pipe raised. "No one calls me weak and gets away with it!"

Satoru spread his hands, still smiling. "I didn't call you weak. I just said I'm stronger."

"Same thing!"

"Not really. 'Weak' is a comparison to an absolute standard. 'Stronger' is a comparison between two specific individuals. It's entirely possible that you're objectively quite strong, and I'm simply stronger. That doesn't make you weak."

Ace's eye twitched. "Stop... using... big words!"

He charged.

The water pipe swung in a tight arc aimed at Satoru's shoulder—not his head, Ace wasn't a monster, even when angry. But as the blow was about to land, he realized with horror that Satoru wasn't moving. Wasn't dodging. Wasn't even flinching.

"Stop! Move!" Ace tried to pull the swing, but it was too late.

The pipe stopped.

Not against Satoru's body—it never reached that far. It stopped in mid-air, a hair's breadth from touching him, held by nothing Ace could see.

"What...?" Ace stared at his weapon, then at Satoru's calm face. "What is this?!"

Satoru tilted his head. "Luffy didn't tell you about my powers?"

Ace whirled on Luffy, who was watching with the same fascination he'd give a particularly interesting bug. "Luffy! What is he?!"

"Oh, Satoru's like me! He ate a Devil Fruit! Except his is really weird and I could never hit him no matter how hard I tried!"

Ace turned back to Satoru, his eyes wide. "A Devil Fruit user?"

"That's right." Satoru's smile widened. "Your attacks can't reach me, Ace. So how about that bet? Whoever loses calls the winner 'brother'?"

Ace's pride flared. "I'm not done yet!"

He attacked again. And again. And again. Left swings, right swings, jabs, kicks, even a headbutt attempt that left him seeing stars without ever touching his target. Through it all, Satoru stood perfectly still, not even bothering to dodge.

Nothing. Nothing is working. What IS this guy?!

Finally, Ace stepped back, breathing hard, his water pipe hanging limply at his side. "What... what ARE you?"

Satoru's grin turned almost gentle. "Done? Good. My turn."

Ace tensed, raising his weapon, ready for anything—

Satoru vanished.

Ace's eyes went wide. He spun, searching, but there was nothing. No sign. No sound. It was as if the white-haired boy had simply ceased to exist.

Then something tapped him on the head.

BOMPH.

Not hard—not even close to hard. Just a light, almost playful tap that somehow carried just enough force to make him see stars for a moment.

Ace dropped to his knees, clutching his head. "Ow... ow ow ow..."

Behind him, Satoru stood with his hand still raised, looking utterly pleased with himself. "That's the iron fist technique. Old Man Garp taught it to me. Effective, isn't it?"

Ace looked up at him, eyes watering slightly from the pain. "You... you cheated."

"How did I cheat?"

"You... you used your weird powers!"

"You used your water pipe. I used my abilities. That's not cheating—that's using your advantages."

Ace opened his mouth, closed it, opened it again. No words came out.

Satoru crouched down to his level, that mischievous smile softening into something warmer. "So. Looks like I win. Care to re-introduce yourself, little brother?"

Ace's face went through several expressions—anger, embarrassment, frustration, resignation—before finally settling on something that was almost, almost, a reluctant smile.

"...Ace," he muttered. "My name's Ace."

Satoru extended a hand. "Nice to meet you, Ace. I'm Satoru. Your older brother."

Ace stared at the hand for a long moment. Then, slowly, he reached out and took it.

Satoru pulled him to his feet. "Good fight, by the way. You've got instincts. Good aggression. With training, you could be really dangerous."

Ace blinked. "You... really think so?"

"I know so." Satoru clapped him on the shoulder. "Now come on. Makino and the village chief are waiting with food. And I don't know about you, but I'm starving."

"FOOD?!" Luffy's earlier patience vanished. "LET'S GO!"

He grabbed both their arms and started dragging them toward the hideout, somehow managing to pull them both despite being the smallest.

Ace stumbled along, still processing everything. I lost. Completely. He didn't even try. But somehow, strangely, it didn't feel as bad as it should have. Because the way Satoru looked at him—not with pity, not with contempt, but with genuine interest and something like respect—made the defeat feel less like a humiliation and more like... a beginning.

Maybe, Ace thought, watching Satoru's back as they crashed through the forest, having an older brother isn't the worst thing in the world.

At the hideout, Makino was setting out food while the village chief grumpily accepted a cup of tea from one of the bandits.

"Those boys better get back soon," the chief muttered. "Food's getting cold."

"They're coming," Makino said softly, her eyes on the forest. "I can feel it."

As if on cue, three figures burst from the treeline—Luffy in the lead, still dragging the other two, all of them covered in leaves and minor scratches from their journey.

"MAKINO!" Luffy screamed. "FOOD!"

Makino's smile widened. "Welcome back, everyone."

The village chief's eyes went to Satoru, then to the boys, noting something in their dynamic that hadn't been there before. His gaze lingered on Ace—the boy looked different. Softer, somehow. Less guarded.

Well, the old man thought, hiding a smile behind his tea. Looks like someone made a new friend.

The Dadan family hideout filled with warmth, laughter, and the sounds of very hungry children descending on very welcome food.

And Satoru, watching Luffy and Ace argue over the last meat bun, felt that warm feeling in his chest again.

This, he thought, is what I was missing.

Home. Family. Belonging.

He'd fight a thousand Embers, recruit a hundred Mihawks, cross a thousand seas—for moments like this.
