Training had been brutal that day, and not in the way Maya enjoyed.
The pack hierarchy challenges had ramped up as newer members tested their place in the hierarchy. As a newly-turned wolf and the Luna's closest friend, Maya found herself in the middle of several intense sparring matches designed to push her limits and establish her rank.
She'd won every single one.
Not through skill alone, though her training with Kai had sharpened her instincts considerably, but through pure determination and the need to prove herself worthy of belonging here. To prove she'd made the right choice when she chose to accept the bite. To show the pack that she wasn't just the human who got turned; she was a pack member with strength and purpose.
But the price was her body screaming in exhaustion and her wolf vibrating with restless energy that had absolutely nothing to do with combat.
