Chapter 15 - Breaking point

[Phayu's Penthouse - Morning, Day 3]

Rain woke to find Phayu already dressed, sitting in a chair across from the bed, watching him.

How long had he been there?

"Good morning," Phayu said, his voice carefully neutral.

"Morning," Rain replied, unease crawling up his spine. Something was different about Phayu's energy today. Colder.

"I did some thinking last night," Phayu continued. "About trust. About loyalty. About how easily you might lie to me."

Rain's blood ran cold. "P'Phayu, I didn't—"

"I want to believe you," Phayu interrupted.

"I want to believe you've been genuine with me these past few days. But Rain, you've been trained by Sky, by my family, to see me as the enemy. How do I know you're not just playing along until you can escape?"

"I'm not—"

"Prove it."

Rain sat up slowly. "How?"

Phayu pulled out his phone—the business one. "Call Prapai. Tell him you're here voluntarily. Tell him you've realized you love me and you're staying."

Rain's mouth went dry. "Why?"

"Because if you really have remembered why we belong together, it shouldn't be hard to tell my family to back off." Phayu's eyes were hard. "Unless you're lying. Unless you're just pretending."

Rain's mind raced. If he refused, Phayu would know he'd been playing along. But if he called Prapai and said those things—

"What if I can't convince them?" Rain asked. "They might not believe me even if I'm telling the truth."

"Then make them believe." Phayu held out the phone. "Or admit you've been lying to me this whole time."

Rain took the phone with shaking hands.

Phayu had put it on speaker and already dialed.

It rang once. Twice.

"Hello?" Prapai's voice, tense and worried.

Rain opened his mouth, but no words came.

"Rain? Is that you?" Prapai's voice cracked. "Are you okay? Where are you?"

"I'm—" Rain's voice broke. He looked at Phayu's expectant face, at the threat in his eyes.

"Tell him," Phayu ordered quietly.

"I'm with P'Phayu," Rain managed. "I'm... I'm okay."

"Rain, no you're not. Sky told us everything. Phayu took you against your will—"

"No," Rain forced out, hating himself. "No, that's not... I came voluntarily. To talk. To work things out."

Silence on the other end. Then: "Rain, if you're in danger, if he's making you say this—"

"He's not," Rain lied, tears streaming down his face. "Phi, I... I think I made a mistake. Breaking up with P'Phayu. I was confused, listening to too many people. But being here with him, I'm remembering why I fell in love."

Each word felt like poison on his tongue.

"Rain, please. Don't do this. Whatever he's told you, whatever he's done—"

"I love him," Rain interrupted, the biggest lie of all. "I'm staying with him. Tell everyone to stop looking for me. I'm where I want to be."

"I don't believe you," Prapai said firmly.

"Rain, I know you. This isn't you talking. This is fear."

Phayu gestured for Rain to end the call.

"I have to go," Rain said quickly. "Please, just... respect my decision. Goodbye, Phi."

He ended the call before Prapai could respond, the phone slipping from his shaking hands.

Phayu's expression was triumphant. "See? That wasn't so hard."

Rain felt something inside him shatter.

He'd just pushed away his only hope of rescue.

"I did what you asked," Rain whispered.

"Are you satisfied?"

"Almost." Phayu pulled Rain into his arms.

"You're learning, baby. Learning that we're a team. Us against everyone who doesn't understand our love."

Rain closed his eyes, feeling the last of his resistance crumbling.

How much more could he take?

[Meanwhile - Theerapanyakul Estate]

Prapai stared at his phone in shock.

The entire family had been listening to the call.

"That wasn't voluntary," Pete said immediately. "Every word was forced."

"We know," Kinn agreed. "But legally, Rain just stated he's there of his own free will. Our hands are tied."

"Then we untie them," Prapai said coldly. "I don't care about legal anymore. I'm getting Rain out tonight."

"Prapai—"

"No," Prapai interrupted his father.

"Every day he's in there, Phayu is breaking him. You heard Rain's voice. That wasn't the person I've been getting to know. That was someone terrified and coerced."

Vegas studied the building schematic again.

"There might be a way. The building has service elevators. If we can access those—"

"Do it," Kinn decided. "Prapai's right. We've been too cautious. Time to remind Phayu that family protects family—but we also stop family from becoming monsters."

Pete looked at Porsche. "Are you ready for this? Once we act, there's no going back. Phayu will never forgive us."

"Then he joins the list of people I've disappointed," Porsche said quietly. "But I won't disappoint Rain by leaving him there."

They began to plan in earnest.

Rescue was coming.

But would Rain survive long enough to be saved?
