Chapter 56 - Chapter 56: The Prague Purge

Lucius

Prague's vampire district was a monument to fear.

The coven headquarters occupied an abandoned factory on the city's industrial outskirts—brutalist architecture that had been converted into fortress through centuries of paranoid fortification. Guard posts on every approach, surveillance equipment covering all angles, the kind of security measures that suggested enemies everywhere.

My assault team held position two hundred meters from the perimeter. Selene, Rigel, and five sub-hybrids—enough force to overwhelm Dmitri's enforcers while I dealt with the tyrant himself.

"Twelve loyal vampires inside," Rigel reported, Enhanced Senses mapping the factory's interior. "Forty other signatures, but their positions suggest prisoners rather than guards."

"They're not prisoners." Selene's voice was cold. "They're subjects. Living in terror because no one's been strong enough to challenge their 'Elder.'"

The reconnaissance had taken two days. We'd interviewed the Prague refugees Michael had treated, gathered intelligence from our new Vienna allies, and built comprehensive picture of Dmitri's regime.

He ruled through torture. Public executions for minor disobedience. Blood dolls treated as disposable resources rather than living beings. Silver burning for anyone who showed insufficient loyalty.

Worse, he wasn't even legitimate Elder. The title required participation in Elder Council, recognition from established bloodlines, political standing that Dmitri had never earned. He was simply powerful vampire who'd claimed authority through violence, held it through fear, and crushed anyone who questioned his right to rule.

"Dawn assault," I said. "Selene and I take point—UV immunity gives us advantage his forces can't match. Sub-hybrids handle the enforcers while I find Dmitri."

The approach began at 5:47 AM.

We hit the factory's eastern entrance as first light touched the horizon. The guards there—two of Dmitri's enforcers—died before they could raise alarm. Rigel's blade found one throat while my claws opened the other.

The interior was maze of converted industrial space. Corridors carved through machinery, rooms established in former work areas, the whole structure reeking of blood and fear.

Dmitri's enforcers responded to our breach within seconds. Professional, disciplined, responding to incursion with coordinated force.

The sub-hybrids engaged them directly. Kira led the assault team—she'd recovered fully from the UV burns suffered during the Lycan attack, her hybrid form now battle-tested and confident.

"Handle them," I ordered. "I'm finding their master."

I moved deeper into the factory, following the strongest blood signature my Enhanced Senses could detect.

[ BLOOD APPRAISAL: SCANNING ]

[ DMITRI - FALSE ELDER - 284 BP ]

[ LOCATION: CENTRAL CHAMBER ]

[ STATUS: AWARE OF ASSAULT. PREPARING. ]

The central chamber had probably been factory's main work floor—massive space now converted into throne room. Dmitri sat on elevated platform, six hundred years of accumulated power evident in his presence.

He was huge. Not just tall—massive, the kind of physical development that suggested constant combat training. His features carried Eastern European ancestry, cheekbones sharp, eyes cold with the absolute certainty of someone who'd never faced challenge he couldn't crush.

[ DMITRI - FALSE ELDER - 284 BP ]

[ AGE: 600 YEARS ]

[ THREAT LEVEL: SIGNIFICANT ]

"Another Elder," he said, rising from his throne. "Come to challenge my authority?"

"I don't recognize your authority. Neither does anyone else who understands vampire law." I moved into the chamber, letting him see the confidence I wasn't faking. "You're not Elder. You're powerful vampire who's been playing tyrant for too long."

"Authority comes from power, not lineage." Dmitri descended from his platform, each step carrying weight that made the floor tremble. "Viktor was 'legitimate' Elder, and you killed him. Seems you understand my philosophy better than you admit."

"I killed Viktor because he was corrupt, not because he was weak." I activated Hybrid form—black-and-silver transformation rippling across my body. "You're just weak."

He charged.

Six hundred years of combat experience compressed into explosive movement. His speed was impressive—close to Elder tier, far beyond normal vampire capabilities. His first strike would have decapitated anything less than what I'd become.

Enhanced Reflexes Lv.9 made the attack trackable. I dodged left, his claws passing inches from my throat, and countered with a slash that opened his ribs.

Dmitri roared—pain and rage combined—and pressed the assault. He was skilled, I'd give him that. Centuries of fighting had honed instincts that compensated for my superior abilities. He predicted my dodges, anticipated my counters, forced me to work for every advantage.

But Apex Form was beyond prediction. Enhanced Strength Lv.11 exceeded anything he could match. Regeneration Lv.7 healed the wounds he managed to inflict faster than he could press advantage.

Three minutes. That's how long the fight lasted.

By the end, Dmitri was bleeding from a dozen wounds, each one healing too slowly to matter. I'd systematically dismantled his defenses, exploited every opening, demonstrated superiority that even six centuries couldn't overcome.

Viktor's sword found his heart.

"You could have ruled differently," I said as he stared at the blade piercing his chest. "Could have built something worth protecting. Instead, you chose tyranny. This is what tyrants earn."

I decapitated him with a single stroke.

[ BP ACQUIRED: 284 ]

The enforcers' battle ended soon after. Between my sub-hybrids and Rigel's leadership, Dmitri's loyalists fell one by one.

[ BP ACQUIRED: 378 (12 ENFORCERS TOTAL) ]

[ TOTAL BP: 2,238/1000 ]

The Prague vampires emerged from hiding as the sounds of combat faded.

Twenty-eight survivors—emaciated, terrified, bearing scars that would take weeks to heal even with vampire regeneration. They'd lived under Dmitri's reign for decades, some for centuries, crushed into submission by power they couldn't resist.

They stared at me with expressions I'd seen before. Hope mixed with fear. Desperation seeking new master, uncertain whether the replacement would be better or worse.

"Dmitri was false Elder," I announced, addressing them directly. "His authority was built on violence, maintained through terror. That's finished."

"And you?" The speaker was young—turned within the last decade, judging by her bearing. "What kind of Elder are you?"

"Different kind. I'm offering real leadership—no torture, no slavery, fair treatment for those who show loyalty. Join Budapest coven or stay independent under alliance. Your choice."

The debate was brief. Twenty-eight vampires who'd survived tyranny by adapting quickly recognized the opportunity I represented.

Twenty-two accepted integration immediately—desperate for safety, for structure, for someone strong enough to protect them from the next Dmitri who might emerge.

Six chose independence. They'd swear neutrality, operate within my territory without interference, but wouldn't bind themselves to another coven after experiencing Dmitri's regime.

I respected their choice. Forced loyalty was Viktor's approach, and I'd seen how that ended.

"Five of you," I said to the integrated vampires, "can receive hybrid conversion if you want it. More power, UV resistance, abilities beyond standard vampire capabilities."

Five volunteered immediately. The promise of strength—real strength, the kind that prevented future enslavement—was irresistible to beings who'd spent decades powerless.

[ HYBRID BREEDING PROTOCOL: ACTIVATED ]

[ 5 SUBJECTS - VAMPIRE ORIGIN ]

[ COST: 200 BP PER SUBJECT - 1,000 TOTAL ]

[ REMAINING BP: 1,238/1000 ]

The conversions took six hours each. By the time the final hybrid emerged from transformation, Prague's satellite territory was established.

The factory became proper headquarters—renovated under hybrid supervision, converted from prison into defensible base. I left three sub-hybrids as local authority: commanders who would maintain order, protect the integrated vampires, and ensure Prague remained stable under the new order.

[ COVEN EXPANDED: 83 MEMBERS TOTAL ]

[ PRAGUE TERRITORY: SECURED (SATELLITE GOVERNANCE) ]

[ REGIONAL REPUTATION: LIBERATOR ]

The return to Budapest felt different from Vienna. Diplomatic victory was satisfying, but liberation carried weight that alliance couldn't match.

I'd killed a tyrant. Freed prisoners. Built something worth protecting.

Maybe I was becoming what Alexander had suggested—leader rather than just conqueror.
