Chapter 12: The Invitation
On the fiftieth day, an official message arrived.
It was from the Arin council. A formal invitation for Kael-Zhur to assume a position on the local decision committee - not as a leader, not as an authority, but as a consultant. Someone who could help mediate conflicts without centralizing power.
Kael read the message three times.
- "What are you going to answer? - asked Yallin, when he showed her the parchment."
- "I don't know."
- "You spent cycles saying people need to take responsibility. Now they're asking you to take one."
- "Direct responsibility. Local. Small."
Yallin smiled.
- "Exactly."
Kael spent the night in the unregistered space. He sat on the central stone and let the silence answer for him. Shuun-Vo didn't appear, but Kael felt his presence anyway, in the absence of pressure, in the permission to not decide immediately.
By morning, he accepted.
Not as Kael-Zhur, the Navigator of Contraduality.
As Kael-Zhur, resident of Arin, friend of Yallin and Sari, bearer of Threnaal and Ser'kaum, cultivator of a small blue fungus called Thren.
He wrote his answer by hand, on a piece of vegetal parchment:
- "I accept. But I won't decide alone. I won't be an axis. I'll just be one more." - "And when I make a mistake, I want you to tell me. Because making mistakes together is still better than pretending someone can bear everything alone."
He signed with his full name.
And for the first time, Kael-Zhur felt that his name was not a burden, it was a place.
