Chapter 3 - The First Night

Sun Lanyue walked silently beside Fang Zhengyuan, the night air cool against her skin, lanterns swaying gently along the courtyard path. The sounds of the wedding feast still lingered in the distance — laughter, music, and the faint scent of Crimson Phoenix Wine and roasted beast meat coming from her husband. She kept her gaze forward, her thoughts calm, letting the quiet of the evening settle around them.

As they entered the Fang Clan courtyard, Sun Lanyue noticed its structure under the soft glow of lanterns. The main hall — the Master Room — stood at the centre, its wooden beams polished and its doors engraved with subtle protective formations. Flanking it were six smaller rooms, each neatly aligned, their lanterns flickering gently, providing a warm welcome to the bride. The stone-paved courtyard stretched between the structures, clean and orderly, with small potted plants and a narrow stream winding along one side.

At the entrance, a shallow basin of burning coals and a polished saddle (ān) were placed deliberately. Aunts and cousins stepped forward with gentle smiles. "Step over the coals, Lady Lanyue, to burn away any lingering bad luck," one said. Another added, "And over the saddle — it will bring tranquility and peace to your new home." Fang Zhengyuan walked silently beside her, offering no words, only a small, steady nod. Sun Lanyue nodded gracefully, walking lightly over the coals, feeling their warmth, then stepping over the saddle, imagining calm and protection settling over the household. Then came a small girl Fang Lianxi, the youngest daughter, peeked out, her small frame framed by the warm lantern light. With careful steps, she approached Sun Lanyue, bowing lightly. "Aunt Lanyue, welcome to our home," she said softly, her eyes wide with curiosity. "I hope you will be happy here with Father." Sun Lanyue's lips curved into a gentle smile as she reached out to lightly pat the girl's shoulder. Before she could speak, Fang Yulan and Mei Ruyan stepped forward from the Master Room, their expressions calm but warm. Yulan gave a small nod toward Lanyue and the child. "Welcome, Lanyue. May this household bring peace and joy to all of us," she said.Mei Ruyan stepped forward, her expression calm and warm. She inclined her head toward Fang Zhengyuan and spoke softly,"Congratulations on your wedding Husband. Everything has been prepared. Your room is ready — please rest well tonight."

Beside her, Fang Yulan stepped closer and smiled faintly. "We'll take the children inside now," she said gently. "They've had a long day."

With that, the aunts guided Fang Lianxi and the other children toward the smaller rooms lining the courtyard, their soft footsteps fading into the quiet. A few relatives exchanged polite farewells before heading back toward the outer paths of Ironcliff, lanterns swaying as they disappeared into the night.

Soon, only the soft glow of the courtyard lamps remained, along with the stillness of the Fang household settling into rest — marking the quiet beginning of a new chapter beneath the same roof.

The door closed softly behind them, sealing off the quiet of the courtyard. Fang Zhengyuan stood still for a moment, listening as the faint sounds of the night faded away. The room was warm, lit by a single lantern whose light danced across the wooden walls. For the first time that evening, the weight of the day truly settled on his shoulders.

He turned toward Sun Lanyue. In the soft glow, her expression was calm yet nervous, her fingers lightly folded before her as if grounding herself. The quiet between them felt heavy.

He spoke softly, his voice steady yet warm, "You are beautiful," as she stood quietly radiant, as though the light itself had chosen her to rest upon.

He turned toward Sun Lanyue, his movements slow and deliberate in the soft, amber glow of the lanterns. The air between them felt heavy, charged with a mixture of long-awaited anticipation and the quiet tremor of nerves. As he led her toward the bed, the rustle of their robes seemed loud in the silence of the room.

He began to untie the silk fastenings of her outer garment with hands that were not entirely steady. Sun Lanyue kept her gaze lowered, her breath hitching slightly as the layers fell away. She was trembling—not from cold, but from the overwhelming weight of the transition they were making. He felt it too, a frantic thrumming in his chest that mirrored her own.

When they finally lay together, the intimacy of the moment felt both fragile and profound. As they merged into one, Sun Lanyue reached up, her fingers curling into his shoulders as she looked into his eyes with a vulnerability that stole his breath.

"Please," she whispered, her voice small but clear, "take care of me, husband." He nodded, just once. The lantern flame flickered softly, and in that quiet glow, the night carried her gently across a threshold — not of flesh, but of heart — guiding her from innocence into the steady grace of womanhood.

Morning light filtered softly through the window lattice. Sun Lanyue stirred, her body heavy with lingering exhaustion, as though the night had taken more from her than she expected. The bed beside her was already cool. Fang Zhengyuan had risen early, as he always did, leaving quietly to begin his morning training before the sun fully climbed the sky.

She sat up slowly, steadying herself. Though her limbs felt weak, her heart was calm. There was no regret—only a quiet sense of change, of something new settling into place. After washing and arranging her robes, she stepped out of the room.

Outside, the courtyard was already awake. Fang Yulan and Mei Ruyan were waiting beneath the eaves, their expressions gentle and knowing. When they saw her, both women stepped forward.

"Good morning, sister," Fang Yulan said warmly.

Mei Ruyan smiled as well. "You must still be tired. Come, sit with us for a while."
