Chapter 3 - Chapter 5: The Bet

The moment she said this, the live stream chat erupted.

[The woman already lost her child! That's pitiful enough!]

[What gives you the right to say that? Apologize!]

[That's disgusting. How can you say something so vicious to a mother who just lost her child?]

[Unfollowed and blocked.]

Su Nian's gaze never once strayed to the live chat. It was fixed on Tangtang's mother, who was putting on a great show of crying, her face a mask of sorrow and shock.

"Your real name is Li Fumei. You were born into a poor, misogynistic family in a village surrounded by mountains. To escape, you came to the city to work, married a man with the surname Li, and gave birth to Li Zhaodi. That was your first marriage."

The audience was stunned.

[Li Zhaodi!?]

[Didn't Tangtang's mother only have one child, Li Tiantian?]

[And wasn't she only married once before being abandoned by her husband, left to raise her child all alone? What this streamer is saying is completely different from her story.]

[So who's lying?]

Tangtang's mother froze, her hand halfway to wiping her tears. Seeing the tide turning against her in the comments, she started to panic. 'How could she know all this?!'

But then a thought occurred to her. She was a minor internet celebrity, after all. Maybe some of her information had been leaked, and this streamer just happened to find it.

She didn't deny any of it. Instead, she lowered her head and continued to sob.

She kept up her defense, "My first marriage failed because my husband was an abusive alcoholic and extremely misogynistic. He even gave my precious daughter such an awful name. I couldn't take it anymore, so I left with my child and nothing else just to get away from him."

"As for my second marriage... it was truly a struggle to raise Tangtang on my own. I was worried she would feel insecure having only a useless mother. I just wanted her to have a proper family."

[Looking at it this way, the streamer is definitely the narrow-minded one.]

[LMAO, she's got some skill, but not much.]

[Is this streamer for real? This isn't what she came here to ask about.]

[Tangtang's mother, don't be sad. I'll donate to you privately! Please leave your contact information.]

But before she could continue her excuses, Su Nian spoke again.

"In 2005, when you were eleven, you pushed your own little sister into a well. But since it was in a rural village with no surveillance cameras, and you were so young, no one suspected you. You've kept it a secret until now. Am I right?"

Li Guizhi, who had still been crying just a moment ago, forgot all about managing her expression. Her mind went blank, her mouth hanging open.

'How could she possibly know this?!'

'Only I and my dead sister knew about this! How could she know?!'

'Don't tell me... my dead sister told her?'

Realizing there was something truly uncanny about Su Nian, she began to panic.

[HOLY SHIT, HOLY SHIT, what did I just hear?!]

[Oh my god, is this for real? So explosive!]

[Is what the streamer's saying true or false?]

[Damn, I can't believe I tuned in for such a huge scoop.]

[Tangtang's mother, don't be sad. I'll donate to you privately! Please leave your contact information.]

The comment about donating was jarringly out of place amidst the sea of shocked reactions.

Su Nian paused for a moment, then continued.

"And what about Tangtang? Didn't you call her a 'useless money-pit' when she was alive?"

On screen, a flash of shock crossed Li Guizhi's face.

"Wh-what nonsense are you talking about? Tangtang is my precious baby, how could I ever..."

"If you keep spouting this nonsense, I'm calling the police! I'll sue you for slander! And that stuff about pushing my sister—where did you hear such a rumor? Keep this up and see if I don't take you to court!"

Su Nian let out a soft laugh, full of contempt.

"Truly a toad in a fine red robe—looks good from afar, but not up close. You look human on the surface, but in reality, you're worse than an animal."

"Didn't you cause your daughter's death? Weren't you the one who deliberately tried to abandon her, and when you saw someone take her away, you just pretended not to see?"

"Without her, isn't this the good life for you? Doesn't this make it more convenient for you and your boyfriend to fly off together?"

"It's even better than you imagined, isn't it? When your daughter was alive, you cursed her for being useless. But now that she's dead, you've discovered she can still make you money. Am I wrong?"

After Su Nian's barrage of accusations, even the live chat had fallen completely silent, everyone quietly processing what they had just heard.

Tangtang's mother was dumbfounded, her mouth agape as if she could swallow two eggs.

"What are you blathering about?! This is slander! I... I don't want a reading anymore!"

[So is what the streamer said true or false?!]

[Don't flame me, but seeing how Tangtang's mother is reacting, I think the streamer might have actually hit the nail on the head.]

[But... how is that possible?!]

[Yeah, I don't believe it either. Mothers love their children so much. Would anyone really treat their own precious child like that?]

[Say something, Tangtang's mother! Is what the streamer's saying true or false?!]

[Tangtang's mother, don't be sad. I'll donate to you privately! Please leave your contact information.]

There it was again, that familiar comment. Su Nian's lips curved into a light, disdainful smile.

The smile was faint and fleeting, as light and silent as a feather.

The contempt in her heart seemed to spill from her eyes.

Tangtang's mother's face was ashen. Panicked, she decided she had to leave this stream.

'This woman is just too freaky!'

"You're a charlatan! Stop spouting nonsense! I'm already in so much pain from losing my daughter, and you're tormenting me with these baseless fabrications!"

A subtle, sly smile appeared on Su Nian's face. "A charlatan? Then how about a bet? If I'm wrong this time, you can consider everything I've said to be complete nonsense. But if you lose, you have to turn yourself in. Do you dare?"

Hearing that Su Nian somehow knew so many of her secrets, she was terrified.

But then came an unexpected twist. Su Nian had proposed a bet.

'Turn myself in if I lose?'

'Sorry, but that's never happening in this lifetime!'

'It's been so many years. The police would never believe her based on empty words.'

'Besides, I'm not a complete idiot. Turn myself in? Am I crazy? No matter what, even if I lose, there's no way I'm turning myself in.'

She pressed her lips together, her interest suddenly piqued.

"Everything you've said is nonsense anyway, but I am interested in this bet of yours. What's the wager?"

A hint of a smile touched Su Nian's face. "We'll just look for three things in your house. If we find them, you lose. If we don't, I lose."

"Huh? That's it?"

On the surface, Tangtang's mother looked a little disappointed, as if she thought Su Nian was toying with her. Inwardly, however, she was ecstatic. 'This idiot actually came up with such a condition.'

'All I have to do is 'fail' to find them, and I'll be fine.'

Su Nian looked at her. "Alright, let's begin. Pan the camera around and follow my instructions."

Tangtang's mother nodded. She mentally scoffed at Su Nian's stupidity, but she figured it was a good thing.

The viewers in the live stream were also surprised. One moment, the two were at each other's throats; the next, they were harmoniously making a bet. What kind of development was this?

A portion of the audience was more concerned with what Su Nian would make Tangtang's mother look for.

[What is this crazy plot twist?]

[Not gonna lie, the streamer's move just now completely baffled me.]

[This is so weird. What on earth is the streamer up to?]

[I don't get it, I don't understand it, and I don't support it, but I'm curious.]

[I just want to see who ends up humiliated in the end!]

[Tangtang's mother, don't be sad. I'll donate to you privately! Please leave your contact information.]

[What's with the person above me? They're in the middle of a bet, and you're telling her not to be sad. Are you nuts?!]
