Cell phones weren't widespread yet, but the old brick phones were already being phased out. Some people had started using PHS phones, which felt more convenient than the bricks and were certainly an improvement over pagers.
But Shen Yi and Qin Jiao had both used smartphones before, so this all still felt rather inconvenient.
They had to find a phone booth to make a call, but luckily, there was one nearby.
