Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: Protecting His Wife

'Of course, if I had made it myself today, it definitely wouldn't have been any worse than this!'

Then, she put on a show, loudly praising, "This is delicious! Xiu Xiu, you're an amazing cook!"

Wen Xiuxiu stood there, her fists clenched tightly, her teeth grinding audibly.

She was dying to lunge forward and snatch the lunch box back.

Song Qingya happened to notice this. A teasing smile tugged at her lips as she deliberately provoked, "Xiu Xiu, why the resentful look? Don't tell me you didn't want me to have it?"

"Of course not."

"I'm honored that you like it, Sister-in-law."

"That's great, then. You should make more from now on."

Just then, another knock came from outside, but before anyone inside could answer, the door was rudely pushed open.

A woman, holding a food container and dressed smartly, came in.

The woman spoke in a hearty voice, "Xiao Fei."

However, the moment she saw Song Qingya in the room.

The woman's expression completely changed.

Her gaze turned cold, and a displeased smile appeared on her face.

"Well, look who it is. A rare sight indeed."

The remark didn't sound friendly at all; in fact, it was laced with sarcasm.

Song Qingya could clearly feel the hostility emanating from the other woman and couldn't help but frown.

It took her a moment, but then she remembered.

'Isn't this the director's wife Xiao Chen mentioned?'

Fei Jin immediately stood up, stepping in front of Song Qingya.

"I invited her."

This small town, though not large, was in a strategically important location.

Because it was near important highways and waterways, troops had always been stationed here.

This arrangement made the small town a strategic point, attracting a lot of attention from the military.

And Fei Jin's Eleventh Division happened to be stationed just outside of town.

Over time, many military families also moved here, forming two distinct areas.

These military families established their own little world here, living relatively independent lives.

One area was an exclusive residential zone for the military families, complete with facilities and a clean environment, serving as the center of their lives.

The other area was inhabited by local residents, with a clear boundary between the two.

The people from both sides didn't interact much, each having their own social circles.

Although they lived in the same small town, it was as if they were in two different worlds, rarely crossing paths.

The families on the base often gathered to chat about the quality of the cafeteria food and discuss how busy the training schedules were.

They usually helped and looked out for each other, appearing harmonious on the surface.

But in reality, there were quite a few hidden conflicts and disagreements.

However, in this environment, Song Qingya had always been an exception.

She always felt that she wasn't from the same world as these "muddy-legs" from the countryside, and she looked down on most of the uncultured military family members.

Whenever the military families tried to organize an activity and invite her, she would always use "not feeling well" as an excuse to not attend.

Her attitude left many people feeling displeased.

After all, Song Qingya was indeed frail, so everyone felt they couldn't force her.

One time, the higher-ups encouraged military families to read more and improve their education.

The neighborhood committee thought of asking the cultured Song Qingya to take the lead.

However, her original self's reaction angered quite a few people.

"Reading? They can barely recognize a single word, and they want to read books? They'd be better off spending that time at home taking care of their children!"

That was her response at the time.

And as luck would have it...

Those words were said directly to the director's wife, Yuan Wei.

As soon as Yuan Wei heard this, her expression changed instantly.

If it weren't for the fact that Fei Jin was the subordinate her husband valued most, Yuan Wei would have really taught her a lesson.

However, the original owner also had her status as an invalid to use as a shield. After saying that, she started coughing violently.

Yuan Wei was afraid that criticizing her would lead to more serious consequences, so in the end, she could only swallow her anger and leave the matter for Fei Jin to handle, telling him to get his wife under control.

Seeing the very healthy-looking Song Qingya before her, Yuan Wei clearly still remembered those arrogant words from before.

She deliberately spoke sarcastically, "Isn't this Miss Song? What made you deign to come down and walk around today?"

In this era, "Miss" was a very unpleasant form of address, as if the mere mention of the word immediately brought to mind those pampered, arrogant daughters of rich families.

Song Qingya quickly explained, "Director Yuan, you must be joking. My family is just an ordinary one. I could hardly be called a 'Miss'."

"Hmph!"

Yuan Wei slammed the lunch box onto the table, the sound of it hitting the surface abnormally loud.

She glared fiercely at Fei Jin and said through gritted teeth, "Xiao Fei, just look at this wife of yours—so tactless! If only you were half as skilled at doing things as you are at talking!"

In the past, Fei Jin would have just given a wry smile, unable to say anything in rebuttal.

But today, his reaction was different.

He gently tugged on Song Qingya's sleeve, signaling for her to stand behind him.

Song Qingya was touched by this small gesture and obediently stood behind her husband.

Seeing the silent understanding between the couple, Yuan Wei's mood worsened.

Her brow furrowed tightly, and her eyes revealed even more displeasure.

Her expression turned even uglier when she heard Fei Jin's next words.

"Aunt Yuan, she's actually great."

Fei Jin's tone was gentle, but his words instantly ignited the fury in Yuan Wei's heart.

"Great?"

Yuan Wei truly couldn't understand what kind of love potion Song Qingya had made Fei Jin drink.

It made him give up so many good girls to marry a wife who was always sick in bed.

The key was that this wife was also trying to get a divorce every other day.

But even so, Fei Jin was still so protective of her!

Yuan Wei was utterly baffled.

Yuan Wei said with a cold laugh, "Let's just talk about meals. What man with a wife doesn't have her personally bring him lunch? And you? You have to get food from the cafeteria every day to bring home for her. Is that true or not?"

These words hit a sore spot.

Song Qingya hid behind Fei Jin, her heart in a panic, but she still mustered her courage and said in a low voice, "I came to bring my husband his lunch today."

Her voice was very quiet.

Upon hearing this, both Yuan Wei and Fei Jin were stunned for a moment.

Yuan Wei was focused on the matter of the lunch.

Fei Jin, however, was savoring the two words "my husband."

Those two simple words stirred huge waves in his heart.

Because it was the first time he had ever heard such an address from her lips.

For the first time, she had called him that.

Song Qingya felt the hand Fei Jin was holding grow hotter.

To put on a show of their affection, she deliberately squeezed his hand back.

She said gently, "Director Yuan, you see, isn't this what I brought for my husband? Oh, the other container was a special delivery from Xiu Xiu, for me. Please don't get them confused."

Wen Xiuxiu's eyes instantly went wide.

She could hardly believe her ears, cursing inwardly, 'So shameless!'

'What does she mean, a special delivery for her?'
