Her scream startled Miles Xavier, who was smoking on a lounge chair. In the very next second, he stubbed out his cigarette and sprinted toward the riding paddock.
The horse trotted a couple of steps, which shouldn't have been a big deal. But that simple movement startled Joan Shaw. As her body twisted, she discovered the saddle was loose! Her entire body started sliding down along with it!
Hearing the scream, the stablehand tried to rescue her at once, but the horse was spooked. It broke free from his hold and suddenly began bolting across the paddock.
Joan Shaw gripped the reins tightly, but half her body was already dangling precariously off the side. She was seconds away from falling.
