Chapter 15 - ACT III: THE MONSTER & THE RECKONING - 3/4 - CHLOE'S NEW JOB

A quiet conference room in the Summit's administrative building. Days later. Sunlight streamed through the windows. The chaos had subsided, replaced by the grim work of cleanup and recovery.

Chloe sat across from Maggie, a cup of tea untouched in front of her. She looked exhausted but calmer than she had in weeks.

Maggie's voice was gentle. "You did the right thing, Chloe. Coming forward. Telling the truth."

Chloe stared at her hands. "It doesn't feel like it. I lied to everyone. I hurt Gareth. I..."

"You were scared. You were manipulated. And in the end, you chose to do what was right. That's what matters."

Chloe looked up. "What happens now?"

"That depends on you. You've been through hell. You need time to heal. But... I could use someone like you."

Chloe was surprised. "What do you mean?"

"You're smart. You're brave—even if you don't feel like it. And you understand the supernatural world in a way most humans never will. I'm building a legal practice that bridges both worlds. I need a partner. Someone I can trust."

Tears welled in Chloe's eyes. "You... you want me?"

Maggie smiled gently. "I want you. If you want the job."

Chloe nodded, unable to speak. Maggie reached across the table and took her hand.

"Welcome to the team."

A hallway outside the conference room. Benjamin waited, leaning against the wall. He straightened when Maggie emerged.

"How is she?"

"Better. It's going to take time, but... she's strong."

"She gets that from you."

Maggie raised an eyebrow. "I barely know her."

"You know enough. You saw someone who needed help and you helped. That's who you are."

He paused, then stepped closer.

"Maggie... about us. Our partnership."

"Yes?"

"I've been thinking. We work well together. Better than well. And I..."

He hesitated. She waited.

"I'd like to see if we work as something more than professional partners."

Maggie studied him for a long moment. Then she smiled—a real smile, the first in days.

"I'd like that too."

---

A small park near the Summit grounds. Gareth sat alone on a bench, staring at the mountains. The sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of orange and purple.

His phone buzzed. A text from Maggie:

Chloe is safe. She's going to be okay. I'm going to take care of her.

Gareth read the message. He typed a reply:

Thank you. For everything.

He put the phone away and looked up at the mountains. After a long moment, he spoke aloud, to no one in particular.

"I was so busy trying to prove I wasn't broken... I didn't see that I was breaking everyone around me."

He took a deep breath.

"No more. No more excuses. No more blame. I'm going to fix what I can. Starting with testifying against Simone. Against Reeves. Against all of them."

He stood, squaring his shoulders.

"And then... I'm going to rebuild. Alone. But not broken. Never broken again."

He walked away, his silhouette slowly merging with the fading light.
