Gu'er listened as Feng Ling spoke of her pregnancy. 'She must not have carried the baby to term,' Gu'er guessed, 'otherwise she wouldn't be in so much pain.'
"I was pregnant, and I was overjoyed. I thought that with a child, he would surely treat me better—at least he wouldn't hit me anymore. But I was wrong. At first, he was quite happy and even went out drinking less. I thought I could finally have some peaceful days. But slowly, he started going out again. One night, when I was four months pregnant, he came home drunk in the middle of the night. I waited for a long time, but he never came to our room. I thought he was too drunk and had collapsed somewhere, so I lit a lamp to go find him. And then… then I found him and his sister-in-law on the same bed."
