Susan Caldwell said in an even more coy tone, "I found a piece of Jade in a stone today. Weren't you always talking about wanting to get Mom a special jade bracelet? The one I found would be perfect for it."
Mr. Caldwell said with a gratified expression, "That's my thoughtful girl."
Susan Caldwell whined coquettishly, "Of course I am. I'm much more thoughtful than my brother. All he knows is his rough-and-tumble life; he'll go half a year without even calling home. He finally got some leave a while ago, but instead of coming home, he ran off to Crestfall to have fun."
Mr. Caldwell chuckled. Susan continued, "Dad, wait for me to come back and give you the Jade, okay? We have to get Mom a bracelet carved with a really special design. It's just..."
She seemed to hesitate at this point, and Mr. Caldwell asked, "Just what?"
