Cara Preston's expression immediately soured. She wanted to refuse, but Vera Xavier looked at her and said, "Didn't you say we sisters share our blessings? Or was that just talk?"
"Of course not," Cara Preston said hurriedly. "It's just that I spent all my New Year's money on stationery and reference books. I don't have anything left, or else why would I have asked to borrow money from you earlier?"
"Is that so!" Vera Xavier sighed. "Well, never mind then. I'm heading to school first. Eat up, and don't be late."
After she spoke, she put on her backpack and made to leave. Cara Preston grabbed her, her eyes scanning Vera's outfit. "Vera, the fabric of this outfit is really nice. I've seen it at the mall before. It's not something you can buy for a few dozen bucks. You lied to Mom, didn't you?"
"What are you talking about!" Vera Xavier said earnestly. "How could an honest person like me lie to Mom?"
With that, she pulled Cara Preston's hand away and walked straight out.
