Laura awkwardly walked to the dining table and sat down. She took the bowl of congee Aiden had ladled for her, carefully considering her words before speaking. "Dr. Shaw, are we... even now?"
Aiden had just said, "And that's it," and Laura honestly had no idea what he meant.
"A kiss, and we're even?"
"What else do you want? That was my first kiss."
"First kiss."
Aiden's thumb brushed over his own lips, and the smile that played at the corners was utterly mesmerizing.
The atmosphere suddenly grew cloyingly sweet. Laura blushed and lowered her head, unsure of what to say.
"From now on, no more drinking. And you're not allowed to call other men 'cutie'."
Aiden's magnetic voice held an unquestionable authority.
"Oh, okay."
"Remember to take your medicine after you finish eating. I have to go back to the hospital in a bit."
"Okay."
Laura sat primly through the rest of the meal, finishing it with a sense of unease. As a courtesy, she washed the dishes for both of them.
