Whenever Clara Grant went to the classroom to find her, or even just ran into her on campus and tried to say hello, she would be driven away by the men at Sarah's side.
Those men had been sent by Ewan Stratton to follow Sarah, ostensibly to "protect" the family's future young mistress.
