Naomi Kenway briefly explained the mission and learned that Six was a fourth-grader at this Hope Elementary School.
The school cafeteria had assigned seating. Six said there were two empty spots next to her and limped ahead, leading Naomi Kenway and the others forward.
Lunch was simple but nutritionally balanced for the children: a dish of eggplant with a few slivers of shredded pork and a hard-boiled egg. Rice and congee were self-serve, and if it wasn't enough, they could go to the front and ask the cafeteria lady for another bowl, up to a maximum of three.
Naomi Kenway had just finished peeling an egg for Ian Shaw when she heard Six say that she was already full.
Six's tray was spotless. She tucked the egg into her pocket as if it were a precious treasure, murmuring, "This is for Mom to eat..."
Naomi Kenway offered her own untouched egg. "Here, take this one too."
Six shook her head. "No, Fairy Sister needs her nutrition too."
