The moment Nathan Lynch saw Renee Jennings, he ran over and grabbed her hand.
"Mom, are you okay? Was the watermelon juice too sweet?"
Renee Jennings snatched her hand back as if she'd been electrocuted.
Nathan Lynch looked aggrieved. "Mom, did I not do a good enough job and make you angry? Please don't be angry, okay? I know I was wrong, I really do. Don't take it out on me anymore..."
As he spoke, he reached up to wipe away his tears.
Renee Jennings stared at him, stunned, her expression complex and unreadable.
