At the sound of the whistle, all the contestants charged forward.
Renee Jennings paddled so hard she sent a splash of water flying right into Chelsea Raines's face. Chelsea coughed a couple of times and wiped her face. "What the hell?!"
Renee Jennings was already a few feet ahead.
Naomi Kenway was having the most trouble of all the contestants. Her tiny spoon could only stir up ripples, leaving the boat completely motionless.
Margaret Jennings and Renee Jennings were the best paddlers among the contestants, but even they struggled with the ridiculous tools. The other four were now more or less neck and neck, while Naomi Kenway had barely moved from the shore.
"Ian, your mom's going to lose. She's paddling so slow," Jared Woods whispered into Ian Shaw's ear, gloating.
Ian Shaw pretended not to hear, turning his body away slightly.
Jared Woods huffed. "My mom says kids who ignore people are the worst!"
