As for learning alchemy himself, he certainly would if the opportunity arose—it never hurt to have another skill. But for now, it seemed more cost-effective to use it as a casting blueprint template. At least that way, he wouldn't have to worry about failing.
If he really wanted to learn, he could just go back to the Curse Seal World and get another legacy.
