Chapter 149 - 149. The Devouring

When the door opened, she could smell Kai and then the others, though the strength of his scent told her he alone had come in.

"Versalis will be okay," he said gently and Uzo made a soft sound of satisfaction.

"Good, I wasn't sure I got her off him in time."

Kai shifted, trying to see her but she stayed where are was, her eyes on Uzo's in the mirror.

She wasn't ready to see Kai, but he shifted sideways to force the issue and she found his face in the mirror.

"Sweet Mother..." he breathed, and she had to agree with his thoughts as she studied his face. He had been beautiful to her when she was human but now he was also powerful, her eyes picking up on every detail she had never noticed before. There was also a possessive feeling in her stomach, the need to be close to her own kind.

Forcing her eyes from him, she looked around the room. She could see it all as she had the first time they had turned her.

"Is that what a vampire Queen looks like?" Kai asked and Uzo nodded.

She wanted to be away from them. She was faster than them both and the handle of the door crushed in her grip, the door ripping free of the wall.

She blinked, looking at it in her hand before dropping it, leaving it to crash to the ground and all eyes turned.

Looking down at the door, she crouched and splayed her fingers against the wood, slowly digging in and closing her fist. Wood splintered into crumbled nothing and she smiled at the sight.

Looking up, she found an unusual number of men looking at her, her eyes going from Daemon to Epharis and then to Alaric, skipping over Jaia without stopping and settling on Versalis who was staring at her with an open mouth.

They all looked shocked, many of them seeming to have stopped working entirely at her appearance.

Dropping the splintered wood, she blew off her hand and stood, the air seeming to want to refuse her under the speed of her movements.

Her eyes found Epharis, and her smile was slow and malicious. He barely had time to process before she tackled him, driving him to the ground.

He rolled and she rolled him again to keep him from getting a good hold on her.

Sitting up, she straddled his chest and punched his face once and then again and again. The sight of him being beaten and it being her fists that were doing it was glorious.

He screamed at her, clawing at her and then her fingers were around his throat. Strangling him, she grinned on triumph as she saw him suffocating.

Arms went around her, and she screamed, dragging the lich up with her.

Someone was gripping her around the middle and still she refused to let him go.

"I'll kill you!" she screamed, her nails digging into his throat to keep her grip on him.

His teeth were bared at her, eyes wild as he struggled to get her off him and trying to rip her apart in the same move.

A hand found hers and she screamed as she felt her wrist breaking under the force of the blow.

Letting go, she knew she had lost her chance to kill him, instead she drove her foot into his side and he was sent crashing through the wall and into Kai's room.

Thrashing, she looked up to see Jaia before her and her eyes narrowed, fury bubbling over at what he had said and that he would dare touch her after he had ripped her heart out a crushed it in his fist.

"Get away from me," she hissed. His face went cold. She didn't care, she was hurting, and she wanted him to hurt too.

Clamping her arms down against her sides, whoever was behind her moved his arms to wrap around them and she looked down. Blonde hair meant Alaric.

She didn't fight him, knowing her chance had passed and the lich was getting back to his feet, eyes a burning green. He stalked forward but Kai stopped him and there was finally stillness.

"Are you calm?" Alaric asked at her ear and she nodded.

Slowly he released her, and she flung his arms away from her, turning on him and stepping away.

"Why wouldn't you let me kill him?" she demanded, her attention flicking to Epharis to find him glaring at her furiously.

"He's my brother," Alaric said, a point of calm in the chaos.

She bared her teeth at him, and his lip curled in response, but she didn't attack him. She knew better than to attack him.

"What did you little beasts do?" Epharis snarled, not taking his eyes off her in case she went for him again.

"You refused to return her magic. We're trying to get them back," Kai said.

Epharis turned on him and the vampire was sent flying.

She took advantage of the anger at the lich to go for him again, but he was prepared, his fingers around her throat and her foot landing in his side.

He grunted and she snarled but his arms were longer than hers and she couldn't get her nails into him.

"I made you this, I can do it again," he snarled, drawing her closer.

"I'll kill you before you get the chance," she whispered, shoving her arm through his chest.

He threw her before she got the chance to reach his heart and her body hit the wall.

Dropping to her knees, she looked up to find Kai and Jaia between her and the lich.

"Move," she hissed.

Kai shook his head, his hands out to calm her. She glared at him, refusing to look to Jaia at all.

"Etani please, you can't kill him," he breathed, but she shook her head.

"Of course I can, he's my husband," she said snidely.

Epharis sneered when she threw his words back in his face. Versalis had finally gained his feet, a bag of blood clutched in his hand.

"She's high on the energy. I freaked out when I was turned as well. Just try not to get in her way," he said. Her eyes turned to him, and her stomach clenched at the sight of him.

She had been mostly ignoring him as a half corpse but now that she paid attention to him, her body ached for him. There was a sudden, burning connection between them and she could only think of him, he was her creator and she loved him with a sudden fire she had never known.

"Versalis..." she said in a tiny, little girl's voice.

His eyes snapped to her. His face darkened at her fear and hurts, protective of what was his.

He was at her side in an instant and she had stood to meet him, his hands on her cheek and in her hair.

She murmured softly at his touch that left tingles on her skin as she leant into him.

His eyes drank her in, and she filled herself with him, revelling in his closeness.

The others in the room ceased to be, he was all that mattered and she soaked up his attention and affection.

Turning her head into his hand, she kissed his palm gently.

He gave a low growl of happiness, his free arm going around her and drawing her closer at a scuff that pulled their attention away from each other.
