Daeron sent Lady Olenna on her way and called his nieces and nephew to the throne room in private.

"Uncle!"

Rhaenys smiled wide as she led Daenerys and Aegon inside. Daeron sat on the Iron Throne but dropped the usual stern look. With the next generation he was usually more patient than he was with his own brothers.

"Come here, all three of you."

Daenerys and Aegon followed her lead and bowed, still a little unsure how to act around their king-uncle. They had only met him once, but the stories they had heard in King's Landing didn't quite match the man in front of them. The rumors painted him as cold and ruthless, the brother who pushed Rhaegar aside and seized the throne. His victories told another story. In a short time he had taken Tyrosh and Myr, done what Aerys once only dreamed about, and hatched dragons that had become legend across the Narrow Sea.

"I brought gifts from across the Narrow Sea," Daeron said as he stepped down from the throne. "Rhaenys, you first."

Rhaenys tried to keep her composure for about three seconds before she gave up and hurried over. Daeron held up a silver-gray necklace. The links had a faint wave pattern and the round pendant showed three small dragons that could rotate inside their arcs.

"Valyrian steel?" Rhaenys asked, eyes widening.

Daeron nodded. "Part of our family's past. I had it made from spearheads we took in Myr."

Rhaenys thanked him quietly and lifted her hair so he could fasten it. Daeron clipped it on, then gave her a light push. "Put it on yourself next time. Don't be lazy."

She looked faintly disappointed but took the necklace and stepped aside.

Daeron turned to the younger two. "You both get something too."

He picked up a forest sword and a hardwood comb from the throne. The sword had a clean, dangerous look to it. Aegon's eyes lit up. Visenya moved faster. She stepped in front of her brother and took the sword with both hands.

Aegon froze, empty-handed.

Daeron looked at the comb, then at Aegon's short black hair, and shook his head. "You're not very Targaryen, nephew. We don't hand over what we want without a fight."

He passed the comb to Visenya as well. "Here. Both are yours."

Aegon tried to smile through the embarrassment. Daeron clapped him on the shoulder. "First time, so I'll let it slide. Lord Owen will bring you your own forest sword later. You and your sister can train together."

Visenya looked up. "I can learn to use a sword too?"

"If you want it badly enough," Daeron said.

She thanked him again, this time with more feeling. Daeron waved them both off. Visenya dragged her brother out before he could say anything else.

Once they were gone, Daeron looked at Rhaenys. "I have news. Lys wants formal talks. I'm going there myself, and you're coming with me."

Rhaenys's face went still. She didn't argue, but her expression was complicated. She nodded once and left the hall without another word.

Daeron turned to Lord Owen and gave quick orders. Two royal ships would carry a delegation of ministers and lords ahead of them. This was a major negotiation. The great houses needed to be represented.

Half a month later Daeron stepped off Caraxes onto Lys soil.

"King Daeron, forgive us for not meeting you farther out," Tregar Ormollen said with a deep bow. Fredo Rogare stood beside him, silver hair and blue eyes catching the light.

Daeron studied Fredo for a moment. "You're younger than I expected, Lord Rogare."

Fredo bowed again. "And far less accomplished than you, Your Grace."

Daeron gave a small smile, then looked at Tregar. "You're the one who led the fleet against us before."

Tregar Ormollen's polite mask slipped for half a second. "I am, Your Grace."

Daeron didn't press it. "I have a vassal who shares some history with you. Jorah Mormont. He's still in Myr waiting for his reward."

Tregar managed a stiff smile. "I look forward to meeting him one day."

Daeron let the subject drop. The "history" between Jorah and the Lysene was finished business now that the cities were falling under the Iron Throne.

They walked toward the low, thick-walled Governor's Tower. Daeron glanced up at it. "Smart. Low profile so dragons don't notice it first."

Fredo answered smoothly. "The builders thought it best."

Two men in bright silver armor stood at the entrance and bowed. Myles Mouton and Lyn Corbray. Rhaegar's Silver Guard.

They greeted Daeron, then bowed again to Jaehaerys and Rhaenys behind him. Rhaenys kept her eyes down. Jaehaerys gave them a short nod.

Daeron walked inside. The hall was already full. Valarr waited on one side. On the other stood Rhaegar.

Daeron looked at his brother and spoke like they were simply running into each other after a long absence.

"Brother. It's been a while."
