Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: The Dog-Dog Fruit

But when they finally saw the so-called treasures, the two who had been floating on flattery went blank.

They stared at Amon with doubt. "Mr. Amon, these good things you mentioned are just these... these... jars?"

Seeing their skepticism, Amon could not let the sale tank. He hurried into his pitch.

"Who said these are worthless. These are big treasures. Your friend Zoro pulled his power from these jars."

"Don't you want to be as strong as Zoro? One hundred thousand berries will not leave you cheated, one hundred thousand berries will not leave you fooled. Spend money to make money. If you buy it, you profit."

"Take a chance. Besides, you do not have enough money to go to sea right now anyway. Why not gamble. Maybe you open one and sail immediately."

Under Amon's coaxing, both boys wavered. Amon smiled inwardly and pressed on. "Relax. You are Zoro's friends. I would not lie to you."

"Look, the original price is one million berries. Since you are Zoro's friends, I am giving you a tenth of that. Ordinary folks do not get this deal."

"Hmm. Johnny, I am buying a jar to try. Do you want one too?"

Yosaku had been talked in circles.

"You, you go first. I will watch."

Johnny still thought a plain jar could not possibly hide treasure.

"Alright, I will test the water." Yosaku nodded and pulled out his savings.

"Mr. Amon, count it."

Amon took the money and grinned. "No need. You are Zoro's friends. I trust you one hundred percent."

"Mr. Amon, you are a good person. We even doubted you earlier. We should not have."

Hearing such trust, the two nearly teared up. Simple, honest kids.

"Hehe, it is fine. Trust goes both ways. So, which jar will it be, handsome?"

"That purple one in front."

"That one? OK. I will bring it right over."

Amon reached out and passed the jar to him.

"Good luck, pretty boy. Here is the wooden mallet. May your jar spit out a legacy, may you pop an epic."

"Thanks, Mr. Amon. You really are a good person. I open it like this, right?" Yosaku hefted the mallet and lined up his swing.

"Yes. Hit it hard."

"Alright." Yosaku nodded and brought the mallet down.

Clang.

The jar split. Three items spilled out.

Amon triggered a scan.

In moments, the three entries lit up in his view.

[50 Colorless Small Crystals]: An item said to contain mysterious power that lets a person unleash an ultimate skill.

[Worn Wooden Club]: A blunt weapon. Sometimes handy for knocking a few extra coins loose.

[Dog-Dog Fruit, Husky Model]: A Zoan-type Devil Fruit. After eating it, the user can transform into a husky. Body strength increases and the nose becomes keen, though in battle they may sometimes do things that surprise both enemies and allies.

"But are these really treasures?" While Amon read the properties, Yosaku picked up the wooden club, doubtful.

"Isn't this the kind of stick we use for firewood?"

"And this, Where is the treasure, Mr. Amon? You are not scamming us, are you?"

"I am not. Why would I scam you. I am telling you, these are great." Amon's tone was earnest. "First, this club. It looks like a stick, but it is a ridiculously strong weapon. If you do not believe me, take your swords and try to cut it. If you leave a mark, I will refund your berries."

It might be a worn club, but in Dungeon Fighter Online it was a Bludgeon worthy of a Ghost Swordsman. Regular weapons would not scratch it.

"So strong? I will try." At Amon's words, they drew their swords and struck.

Clang, clang, clang.

Steel met wood, and metal rang out. Despite its shabby look, the club was hard as iron. If a live streamer saw this, they would be over the moon.

"Not a single scratch."

"This is incredible."

Panting after a flurry of blows, they sheathed their swords and examined the club. Still pristine. Both gasped.

"Well? I was not lying. This piece is no worse than Zoro's weapon. The only question is whether you can bring out its power."
