Chapter 40 - Chapter 40 Kazekage-sama is alive

40 Kazekage-sama is alive

The crowd didn't cheer at first. They just stood there, stunned, watching as Naruto eased Gaara down and Temari wrapped her arms around her brother like she was afraid he might vanish again.

Then the murmurs started.

"Kazekage-sama is alive."

"He's back."

Temari's voice shook as she held Gaara. "Never do something like that again. Ever. You scared me half to death."

Gaara blinked, still weak, but fully conscious now. He hesitated, then lifted a hand and rested it lightly on her arm. "I'm sorry."

Kankuro reached them a moment later, supported by a shinobi, and dropped down beside Gaara with a shaky laugh. "You really don't know how to take it easy, do you?"

Gaara looked up at the faces around him. Civilians. Shinobi. People who once flinched at his shadow. Now they looked relieved. Worried. Some were openly crying.

"Kazekage-sama," someone whispered.

Gaara swallowed. "Naruto brought me back," he said quietly. "If not for him… I wouldn't be here."

Naruto scratched the back of his head, grinning like he wanted to deflect the weight of it. "Hey, don't make it sound so dramatic. I just kept a promise."

Temari stood and turned to him, her eyes red but steady. She bowed, deep and sincere.

Naruto nearly panicked. "Whoa, hey, don't do that. Seriously. You don't bow to friends."

"You saved my brother," she said. "You saved our Kazekage."

Naruto shrugged. "Same thing, as far as I'm concerned."

Baki stepped forward, his expression solemn. "Sunagakure owes you a debt, Naruto Uzumaki."

Naruto waved it off. "Nah. Just make sure he gets some real rest. He's been through enough."

As medics carefully lifted Gaara onto a stretcher, the crowd parted without being told. People bowed. Others simply watched in silence. Gaara turned his head slightly as he was carried away, his eyes finding Naruto one last time.

"…Thank you," he said.

Naruto gave him a small nod. No jokes this time.

From the rooftops, the wind stirred the banners of Sunagakure. For the first time in a long while, the village felt steady. Not because of fear. Not because of power.

But because its Kazekage had come home, carried back by someone who understood exactly what it meant to be called a monster and choose to protect others anyway.

And that, more than any victory, lingered in the desert air.
