Chapter 27 - Chapter 27 The Older Sister,

27 The Older Sister,

The desert roared around us, heat rising, sand shifting beneath our feet. But neither of us slowed.

A few hours later, evening swallowed the horizon, and the storm hit without warning. Wind screamed across the dunes, sand cutting through the air like shards of glass. Pushing forward would have been suicide. We diverted into the nearest rocky outcrop and found a narrow cave, just deep enough to shield us.

Inside, the noise dulled to a constant howl.

Temari paced near the entrance, arms crossed, irritation written all over her face. "Why doesn't this storm just end already?"

I knelt near the back of the cave and sparked a small fire, keeping it low and controlled. The flickering light pushed the shadows back just enough to make the space feel less hostile. "It won't," I said calmly. "Not anytime soon. We're stuck here for the night."

She let out a breath and finally sat down. "Then we'll reach Sunagakure tomorrow morning." Her voice tightened. "I hope we're not too late."

I finished setting up my tent and looked over at her. "Worrying here won't help. And heading out into that?" I nodded toward the entrance, where sand whipped past like a living wall. "That'll just get us injured or worse."

She knew it. The desert wasn't forgiving, especially during a storm like this.

"You know this land better than I do," I continued. "Speed won't save us right now. Rest will."

Temari was quiet for a moment, then nodded and started setting up her own gear. The fire crackled between us, small but steady.

Outwardly, I stayed calm. Inside, I was anything but.

Every minute we were delayed tightened something in my chest. The plan was already in motion. Gaara was in enemy hands. A few hours could mean the difference between reaching him in time or arriving too late.

I stared into the flames, jaw set.

The storm could slow us down.

It wouldn't stop us.

The fire crackled softly between us, its light dancing across the cave walls. The storm outside hadn't let up, but in here, everything felt quieter. Heavier.

"Naruto… Gaara will be alright, right?"

Her voice was soft, almost fragile. When I looked at her shadow against the stone, I didn't see the fierce kunoichi of the Sand. I saw an older sister, scared in a way only family can make you scared.

Pakun and Lady Katsuyu were already asleep in my tent, the cave settled into a rare moment of stillness. I shifted closer to Temari and sat beside her, staring into the flames for a moment before speaking.

"I don't know exactly what state Gaara's in right now," I said honestly. "I won't lie to you about that."

She stiffened, just slightly.

"But I do know this," I continued. "Gaara is stubborn. Stronger than he looks. Stronger than most people give him credit for. He won't break easily. And Shukaku isn't the kind of beast that lets anyone control things without a fight."

I turned my head and met her eyes. "No matter what's happened so far, I promise you this. I'll bring Gaara back. I'll make sure he comes home. To you."

She searched my face, really looked at me, as if trying to find any crack in my resolve. Whatever she saw there made her decision for her.

Suddenly, she moved.

Her arms wrapped around me, tight and desperate, and the next thing I knew I was flat on my back, the breath knocked out of me as she collapsed against my chest. Her face pressed into my jacket, shoulders shaking as the tears finally came.

"I'm really worried, Naruto," she whispered, voice breaking.

I didn't joke. I didn't tease.

I just wrapped an arm around her and held her there, steady and firm, letting her cry it out while the storm raged outside. In that moment, strength wasn't about chakra or jutsu.

It was about staying right there, proving that she didn't have to carry this alone.
