The heavy footfalls of my boots echoed down the narrow stone stairway, Aidan following right behind me with his hand resting on the hilt of his blade.
We had been upstairs making final preparations to pack Maria's things for transport, trying to figure out how to move her without causing her fragile spirit to snap completely, but then the faint sound of raised voices and a sharp, cracking crash came echoing up through the lower levels. In a pack on lockdown, every unusual noise made my skin prickle.
"Through here," I muttered under my breath, rounding the corner into the servant passage leading toward the laundry exit.
"If it's another group of guards panicking, I swear to God I'm going to lose my mind," Aidan growled softly from behind me, his tone dark and exhausted.
