Chapter 123 - Massive Gains, Opening the Loot Boxes

The only thing that left Kurosaki Rei a little unhappy was that eye-catching Legendary Treasure Chest, which was clearly labeled as compensation for killing Muzan.

In other words, when he slew Muzan there had been a chance for a Legendary chest to drop—but it hadn't. Instead, the space compensated him afterward. That made Kurosaki Rei feel like he'd taken a small loss.

After all, it took up one of his reward slots, and there was no way he could refuse a Legendary-tier item.

Seriously, wasn't his luck supposed to be pretty good? Why didn't a chest drop?

And that side quest was really clueless too—why did it only count the Twelve Kizuki and ordinary demons? Why wasn't Muzan included?

Of course, Kurosaki Rei only complained a little in his heart. Overall, his gains from this world were still extremely bountiful. After gulping down the rest of his cola, he pulled the coffee table closer and prepared to organize his earnings.

Because he'd previously discovered that treasure chests dropped by demons usually produced equipment and items related to them—and were often unusable directly—Kurosaki Rei hadn't rushed to open any of the chests he obtained inside the world.

The two purple chests he got on Natagumo Mountain seemed average, so he'd left them alone. Later, during the battle in the Infinity Castle, he harvested a large number of chests. With all threats eliminated, he'd focused on training himself during the remaining days, saving the excitement of opening chests for later.

He liked saving them up and indulging all at once. With his luck, this luxurious opening spree was bound to yield something good.

At present, there were four purple chests on the table, dropped respectively by Upper Rank Five, Lower Rank One, Upper Rank Three, and Upper Rank Two.

There were also three Rare chests. Kurosaki Rei hadn't paid attention to who dropped them; they were probably from the remaining Lower Rank demons he casually killed while passing through the Infinity Castle and picked up during the battlefield sweep.

Aside from those, the rest were Deceased Chests, six in total. Qingfeng and an unknown Upper Rank Eight contributed two of them. As for the remaining four, Kurosaki Rei wasn't sure—most likely newly promoted members of Muzan's Twelve Kizuki.

Based on his understanding of "game mechanics" before returning to the space, Kurosaki Rei felt that opening chests required some padding. So he started with the ones he considered the worst.

[You have obtained 1000 Terminus Coins…]

[You have obtained 800 Terminus Coins…]

[You have obtained Blood Demon Art: Blood Vine Skill Scroll (Rare)]

After opening the three Rare chests, Kurosaki Rei's expression remained calm. The drops were garbage, but he'd been mentally prepared. They were only Rare chests—he hadn't expected anything good anyway.

He took a look at the Blood Vine skill scroll. It was a very average spell-type skill and even required demon bloodline compatibility. If sold on its own, probably no one would want it.

Keeping his composure, Kurosaki Rei continued, picking up the two purple chests from Lower Rank One and Upper Rank Five.

[You have obtained 4000 Terminus Coins]

[You have obtained 6000 Terminus Coins]

Kurosaki Rei froze when he heard the prompts. "That's it? That's all?"

These were purple-quality chests! Where was the equipment? The items?

He had seen the space's public drop-rate disclosures before. Supposedly, there was only a 10% chance for world-dropped chests to yield only Terminus Coins. So how did he hit it twice in a row?

Something was wrong. Very wrong.

The calm on Kurosaki Rei's face began to crack. He took a deep breath and decided to open a more controllable type of chest—Deceased Chests, which allowed him to judge items by touch.

He opened one and reached inside, carefully feeling it.

Hmm… soft, yet somewhat tough. Long and slender, with a handle. Kurosaki Rei analyzed it—it should be some kind of whip-type main weapon.

He quickly pulled his hand back out to confirm.

[You have obtained: Erotic Whip ×1]

"Fuck!"

Kurosaki Rei flung the whip away, thinking that explorers in the Terminus Space all had something seriously wrong with their heads.

There were two attempts left. He continued.

[You have obtained 600 Terminus Coins]

[You have obtained 200 Terminus Coins]

Kurosaki Rei: ???

He remembered that this chest was dropped by that Upper Rank Eight. Fine, no equipment—but were you really this poor?!

The look on Kurosaki Rei's face was no longer benevolent. He opened the next Deceased Chest.

[You have obtained 800 Terminus Coins]

[You have obtained Terminus Brand Mosquito Repellent ×1]

[You have obtained Large Bar of Soap ×1]

Staring at the pile of junk in his hands, Kurosaki Rei began to question life itself. For a moment, he couldn't tell whether he should doubt his Luck stat—or the sanity of Terminus Space explorers.

After repeatedly pulling out trash, he finally understood. Setting aside those who stuffed their chests with weird items, most explorers probably filled their Deceased Chests with junk to prevent enemies from benefiting if they died.

After consecutive failures, Kurosaki Rei became a bit self-destructive. He sped up, no longer bothering to feel carefully.

Five Deceased Chests in a row were opened—almost all Terminus Coins and garbage. Only when he opened the sixth, the one dropped by Qingfeng, did a smile finally bloom on his face.

[You have obtained Seven Emotions Token (Purple) ×1]

This was a perfect-score purple item. Upon use, it could summon Upper Rank Four to fight. If Upper Rank Four did not die during combat, he could be recalled back into the token. After recharging, it could be used again.

Its functionality was extremely powerful. Though it wasn't of much use to Kurosaki Rei himself, if given to a Tier-1 explorer, they could practically steamroll all Tier-1 difficulty worlds.

Of course, items like this—whether considered top-tier tools or special equipment—were generally unaffordable for Tier-1 explorers. Kurosaki Rei planned to sell it to an adventurer group.

Holding the Seven Emotions Token, Kurosaki Rei felt happy—but then frowned.

He realized that this item must have been obtained by Qingfeng after killing Upper Rank Four.

Which meant that Qingfeng killed an ally from the same faction, triggered a purple chest without any probability bonus—and then opened such a god-tier item?!

That wasn't right. Not at all.

Why could such a weakling trigger chest drops, while Kurosaki Rei himself killed so many demons and didn't get a single drop outside the Twelve Kizuki?

With doubts in his heart, Kurosaki Rei reached in again.

[You have obtained 1800 Terminus Coins]

His mouth twitched. He closed his eyes and randomly grabbed something.

[You have obtained Large Bowl of Old Dough Noodles ×1 (Purple)]

Kurosaki Rei checked the item's attributes. It originated from the Food Wars world. After consumption, it rapidly restored a large amount of Soul Source and some Life Source—a pretty solid recovery item.

His luck had turned!

Kurosaki Rei instantly perked up and rode the momentum to open the remaining chests.

[You have obtained Expert-Level Combat Mastery Scroll ×1]

Upper Rank Three's chest produced a scroll, but Kurosaki Rei felt it was useless for him. He could sell it based on market prices.

[You have obtained Blood Demon Art: Mist Ice · Sleeping Lotus Bodhisattva Skill Scroll ×1]

The item from Upper Rank Two was also rather mediocre in Kurosaki Rei's eyes. Like the others, it required demon bloodline compatibility. The power was decent, but that restriction severely limited its value.

Due to a hidden mission, Kurosaki Rei had obtained a powerful bloodline item—but he wasn't eager to use it.

It was a reward from the Tamayo Research Results mission. This bloodline was Legendary-tier, even stronger than Muzan's original bloodline, as it was immune to sunlight and had no obvious weaknesses. However, since it was still a demon bloodline, it carried a certain compulsion to eat humans, which was hard to control.

Although Kurosaki Rei was confident in his self-control, bloodlines imposed many restrictions. Explorers usually couldn't possess multiple bloodlines, unlike cultivation techniques. Bloodlines were notoriously incompatible.

So he planned to package that bloodline together with several Blood Demon Arts and sell them—assuming anyone could afford them.

With a solemn expression, Kurosaki Rei took out the final two chests: Upper Rank One's and Kibutsuji Muzan's Legendary chest.

He reached first for Upper Rank One's chest. It was his first time seeing a Legendary chest, and his anticipation was sky-high.

To his disappointment, nothing spectacular happened. No strange phenomena, no legendary brilliance—just a plain prompt.

[You have obtained Inheritance Crystals (Small) ×10]

Kurosaki Rei fell into silence.

For a moment, he couldn't tell whether he'd gained or lost. Inheritance Crystals were high-value items with demand far exceeding supply in the space. Ten small ones were worth at least 40,000 Terminus Coins, depending on the market—but he still felt like not getting a legendary item was a loss.

He took a deep breath and turned his gaze to the final chest.

"Terminus, this is your own special-issue chest. Don't screw me over."

With that, he opened it in one swift motion.

Instantly, a dazzling orange-gold light burst from the chest, illuminating the entire room.

Joy immediately spread across Kurosaki Rei's face. Based on his gaming experience, this usually meant—a big drop.

[You have obtained Coward's Pendant (Legendary)]

The smile on Kurosaki Rei's face froze when he heard the name. But he calmed down quickly. Since it had flashed like that, it had to be good. He waited for the light to fade and carefully examined the pendant.

It was a blood-red, heart-shaped pendant, semi-transparent, crisscrossed with veins of blood—eerily beautiful.

Coward's Pendant

Origin: Terminus Space

Quality: Legendary

Equipment Type: Accessory

Requirements: 40 Constitution

Description:

An accessory extracted by the Terminus Space from Kibutsuji Muzan, slain by Pioneer No. 008. While equipped, the pioneer's Charisma is locked at –1.

Equipment Skill 1: From the Heart (Passive)

Effect: Increases the wearer's maximum Life Source by 30%.

Equipment Skill 2: Afraid of Death (Passive)

Effect: Increases natural Life Source regeneration by 500%. Healing received is increased by 500%.

Score: 375 (200–400)

Evaluation: Don't feel ashamed. Wear it—and you'll be an immortal brat.

Kurosaki Rei's mouth twitched at the space's evaluation, but he had to admit—it wasn't wrong.

As a Legendary accessory, the Coward's Pendant only had two skills, but each was absurdly powerful. It massively enhanced survivability—truly a main-tank artifact.

A 30% increase to maximum Life Source was essentially adding nearly a third to one's HP bar, significantly increasing combat tolerance.

The +500% natural Life Source regeneration was an incredibly strong resource-saving effect. Paired with Kurosaki Rei's bed, even sleeping alone could rival the recovery of some healing items.

Even more terrifying was the healing amplification.

Simply put, if Kurosaki Rei originally needed five seconds to reattach a severed limb with Restoration techniques, now it would take less than one second.

If this pendant were seen by the main tank of a large team, they'd probably sell everything they owned to buy it—especially since they usually had healers backing them up.

Kurosaki Rei, however, had no intention of selling it. Despite the minor side effect and the embarrassing name, it was undeniably a top-tier Legendary accessory.

His Giant's Heart could finally be retired.

After finishing the chest opening, Kurosaki Rei stood up and headed out, preparing to go to the Enhancement Hall. He currently had 25 attribute points on hand—enough for a major boost.

Beyond that, he was also extremely interested in the attribute cap rewards mentioned by the space.
