Chapter 2 - Azuremyst Academy

Three hundred years had passed since the earthquakes that shook Ignis Cor, Aethereia City, Ironhaven Fortress, and Crystal Falls to their foundations — three hundred years since the Six Mega Wizards of Argentum Spires first traced the tremors back to the silent, ancient depths of Phorashia. What they had built in response now stood complete: the greatest magical academy in the history of Valvyx.

Azuremyst Academy.

It rose from the earth like something the world itself had dreamed into being — white stone towers threaded with veins of deep blue crystal, golden runes drifting lazily across their surfaces like living constellations. Entire platforms floated free of the ground, tethered to nothing but the will of the wizards who'd raised them, while ancient structures hung suspended in the open air as if gravity itself had agreed to make an exception here, and only here. No ordinary craftsman had laid a single stone of it; every wall, every archway, every floating stair had been shaped by magic older than the kingdoms it now watched over.

At the academy's summit, far above where students trained and slept and dreamed of greatness, sat the Sixfold Sanctum — a circular hall vast enough to swallow a kingdom's throne room, with six colossal entrances arranged like the points of a crown. The air inside carried no dust, no scent of stone or age — only the faint charge of concentrated magic, the kind that made the hair on one's arms rise the moment the great doors opened. Each entrance led to a chamber bearing the name of a Mega Element: Brine, Sonic, Gamma, Life, Copy, Gum. At the Sanctum's center hovered a crystal core easily thirty feet across, pulsing with magic so dense the air around it shimmered and bent like heat over summer stone. Beneath it, the floor was etched in glowing script recording the entire history of Valvyx — legendary battles, elements long extinct, elements never yet discovered, the slow and endless evolution of magic itself, the runes shifting faintly whenever a new page of history demanded to be written.

Beyond the six great doors lay wonders few would ever witness. The Brine Chamber held an ocean suspended in defiance of every law of nature, waves frozen mid-crest around floating sea crystals, the salt-heavy air thick enough to taste. The Sonic Chamber sat in perfect, suffocating silence, broken only by glowing patterns of sound made visible, ripples of gold and violet light chasing one another across the walls. The Gamma Chamber pulsed with contained starlight, cosmic energy humming just beyond the reach of anything mortal, its walls warm even from a distance. The Life Chamber bloomed endlessly, a garden of impossible plants breathing warmth and healing energy into the air. The Copy Chamber multiplied itself into a thousand reflections, none quite matching the last. And the Gum Chamber never held its shape at all, walls and floor reshaping like living rubber with every passing breath.

Below the Sanctum, the academy unfolded across the mountainside in tiers of white stone and floating bridges. Massive lecture halls stood carved into the rock itself, their magical blackboards capable of rendering entire diagrams of spellwork in shimmering light at a professor's spoken word. Elemental training rooms lined the eastern wing, each one reinforced against the very disasters its students were meant to practice causing, while combat arenas further down the slope bore the scorch marks and frost scars of a thousand sparring matches. Alchemy laboratories filled the lower halls with the mingled scent of rare reagents, and quiet research rooms held scholars hunched over centuries-old texts, chasing magic no one had yet named. Examination halls sat apart from it all, solemn and still, reserved for the days when a student's entire future hung on a single test. Floating classrooms drifted gently above the courtyard, connected only by slender bridges of light, swaying just enough to remind everyone crossing them how far above the ground they truly were.

Further below still, the dormitories sprawled outward — private and shared rooms alike, furnished with beds and desks that shifted their shape to suit whoever slept there, training halls scarred by centuries of spellwork, and common areas where laughter carried long into the night. Dining halls served meals enchanted to taste exactly as a homesick student remembered them. Elemental study rooms let students test their affinity in private, and the great libraries held knowledge of extinct elements, undiscovered elements, and battles the outside world had long since forgotten. For those who needed it, quiet meditation chambers offered the only silence some students would find all year.

Students arrived at eighteen, sorted into four sections by level: Section D for the newly arrived, levels one through forty-nine; Section C for those climbing past fifty; Section B for those nearing two hundred; Section A for those brushing the edge of Mega-tier power at two hundred fifty and beyond. Advancement came only when strength demanded it, never before. Upon graduation, they scattered across Elyria — some became Knights sworn to Eterna, Cyros, Xyros, or Zyros; others became Travelers, hunting monsters and clearing dungeons for the guild at Argentum Spires; and a rare few, if their power ever reached far enough, were considered to become the next Mega Wizard.

For three hundred years, Azuremyst Academy had stood as a monument to everything the Six Mega Wizards had built — a place where the sons and daughters of kingdoms across Elyria came to learn what their own ancestors had never dared attempt. Today, it was about to become something else entirely.

---

It began as a smear of black against the northern horizon — a cloud so vast it swallowed the sun outright, plunging the far edge of Phorashia into an unnatural dusk. Rain followed, endless and cold, and it did not stay in the north. Slowly, deliberately, the storm crept south, toward the academy's high white towers.

Aveline Valenya noticed it first. Standing at the edge of the Sonic Chamber's threshold, she let the sound of the coming rain wash over her senses — and beneath the static hiss of falling water, she caught something else. A heartbeat. Vast, slow, and utterly wrong. "There's something under the rain," she said quietly, more to herself than anyone. "Something breathing."

Aldren Vareth arrived beside her a moment later, drawn by a disturbance only he could feel — an ancient pressure moving through every drop of water in the storm, as though the rain itself carried memory. His expression, usually so composed, tightened by the smallest degree. "It's not just falling," he murmured. "It's being carried. Something old is moving beneath it."

One by one, the others gathered at the Sanctum's outer balcony. Vaelor Storme cracked his knuckles, lightning sparking faint and involuntary along his fingers, a grin spreading despite the weight settling over the group. "Finally," he said. "Something worth getting excited about."

"You say that before every disaster," Florissa Verdalia murmured, though her eyes never left the horizon, worry already softening her usually gentle face into something harder.

Darius Greymont leaned over the balcony's edge, peering north with open curiosity rather than fear. "Whatever it is, it's big enough to eat that whole storm."

Nyra Sonastra said nothing. She only watched, silent as always, her sharp eyes narrowing as the black clouds churned and thickened over the treeline.

Then they saw it.

Beneath the storm, vast enough to blot out what little light remained, something moved — a shape too large to belong to the sky, scaled and ancient, gliding through the clouds as though the heavens themselves had become an ocean for it to swim through.

Marraiania.

The Abyssal Calamity That Drowns Continents. A flood beast that surfaced once every three thousand years, drawn by nothing but the scent of power strong enough to challenge it.

All six of them felt it arrive at once — the same weight settling behind six pairs of eyes in the same instant.

"That," Aldren said quietly, "is no ordinary storm."

Without another word, the six of them left the Sanctum, descending past the floating classrooms and dormitories where students pressed anxious faces to windows, until they stood together on the open plain before Azuremyst Academy's gates. Rain lashed down around them, cold and relentless, soaking through robes and hair alike, yet none of them moved to shield themselves from it.

Marraiania's massive head turned toward them, drawn inexorably by six auras of overwhelming magic gathered in one place. Its eyes, like drowned moons sunk deep in ancient scale, fixed on the small figures standing defiant beneath the storm.

For a long moment, nothing happened at all. The rain only fell harder, the wind rising into a low, mournful howl, the ground trembling faintly beneath the sheer weight of the creature's presence pressing down from above. Neither side moved. Neither side breathed.

Then Marraiania roared — a sound that split the heavens themselves, shaking the towers of Azuremyst Academy down to their ancient foundations — and lunged.
