Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: The Test of Blood and Bond.

The estate did not return to silence after the shadows withdrew.

Instead, it breathed.

Zyra felt it—the slow, uneasy pulse in the walls, the way the air thickened as though the house itself had awakened. She tightened her grip on the amulet, its faint glow now steady against her palm. The clever monkey paced along the edge of the chest, restless, tail flicking sharply.

"They didn't leave," Zyra whispered. "They're waiting."

Ethan nodded, his eyes fixed on the corridor ahead. "That wasn't an attack meant to destroy us. It was a warning… or a test."

The words settled heavily between them.

They moved deeper into the estate, following the newly uncovered map. The symbols of both their families were etched into its surface, intertwining so closely they were impossible to separate. The monkey scampered ahead, stopping frequently to listen, tapping softly when it sensed danger.

At the end of the corridor stood a door neither of them had seen before—tall, carved with ancient symbols and sealed by two emblems.

Zyra's breath caught. "Those crests… one is mine."

"And the other is mine," Ethan said quietly.

As if responding to their presence, the emblems glowed faintly.

The monkey chittered urgently and pressed its small hand against the seam of the door. A low hum filled the corridor.

Slowly, the door opened.

Inside was a circular chamber illuminated by a pale, otherworldly light. Stone pillars rose toward the ceiling, each carved with scenes of past generations—marriages, alliances, betrayals, and wars. At the center stood a pedestal holding a single, weathered book bound in dark leather.

Zyra felt her chest tighten. "This place… it feels important."

Ethan stepped closer to the pedestal. "This must be where the contract was first sealed."

The monkey leaped onto the pedestal and tapped the book insistently.

Zyra opened it carefully.

The words inside made her heart race.

"When the bloodlines of Zyra and Ethan unite, the balance is tested. The contract is not a chain, but a trial. Only those bound by trust may protect the legacy. Should fear, betrayal, or separation occur, Alverin's claim awakens."

Ethan's jaw tightened. "So Alverin can't take control unless we fail."

Zyra swallowed. "Fail… or turn against each other."

The chamber trembled.

A low, echoing voice filled the space—not loud, but commanding.

"You understand now."

The shadows gathered, not attacking, but forming a tall, indistinct figure near the far pillar.

Zyra's breath shook. "Alverin…"

"Not yet," the voice replied calmly. "I am only what remains of the vow's guardian. But Alverin is listening."

The monkey bristled, positioning itself between the shadows and Zyra.

The voice continued, "The contract binds your families because your ancestors chose unity over ruin. Alverin's line was denied that power. Now, it seeks to reclaim it—by breaking you."

Ethan stepped forward. "We won't let that happen."

The shadows shifted, pressing closer. "Then prove it."

Suddenly, the chamber split with light. The floor between Zyra and Ethan cracked, forcing them apart. Shadows surged upward, forming walls that blocked their view of each other.

"Ethan!" Zyra cried.

"I'm here!" his voice echoed, strained.

The monkey leapt instantly, racing across fallen stones, chittering sharply as it searched for a path between them.

The guardian's voice returned. "This is the test. Fear will separate you. Trust will reunite you."

Zyra's heart pounded painfully. The shadows whispered doubts into her ears—voices telling her Ethan would fail, that he would choose his family over her.

She shut her eyes.

"No," she said firmly. "We choose together."

On the other side, Ethan placed his hand against the shadowed wall. "I trust you, Zyra. No matter what."

The amulet in Zyra's hand flared brightly.

The monkey screeched triumphantly and slammed its small palm against the cracked floor. The shadows recoiled, shrieking as the light surged between them. The walls shattered, dissolving into smoke.

Zyra and Ethan stumbled forward, colliding in the center of the chamber.

The shadows retreated to the corners, restless and angered.

The guardian spoke once more, softer now. "You have passed the first true trial."

Zyra clutched Ethan's hand, her voice shaking. "So this is what Alverin wants… to break us."

"Yes," the voice replied. "Each trial will test your bond. Fail, and Alverin claims the legacy of both families. Succeed, and the shadows lose their hold."

The chamber began to dim.

Before vanishing completely, the guardian left one final warning:

"Alverin will no longer hide. The next attack will not be a test."

Silence returned—heavy and final.

Zyra exhaled shakily. "This is bigger than we imagined."

Ethan nodded, eyes burning with resolve. "But now we know the truth. As long as we stand together, Alverin cannot win."

The monkey hopped onto Zyra's shoulder, chittering softly, its presence grounding her.

They had survived the trial.

But the war had officially begun.
