Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: Legalization

"As you wish," Larys nodded.

"Go prepare first, and while you're at it, help me summon Hugh," Aegon waved his hand.

Larys stood up and bowed, then limped away.

Larys followed the corridor and found Hugh, who was currently reading with a frown.

"Lord Hugh, Your Highness wishes to see you," Larys said.

Hugh, who was studying diligently, looked up, saw it was Larys, and immediately stood up and nodded.

"Alright, I'll go now. Thank you for making the trip, Lord Larys."

"You're welcome."

Larys kept his attitude very low and appeared amiable.

Although Hugh held no formal official position, throughout King's Landing, who didn't know that Hugh was Aegon's most trusted man?

Not to mention Larys, even those on the Small Council dared not show any contempt for Hugh when they met him!

Hugh quickly arrived at Aegon's room.

"Your Highness, you summoned me?"

After greeting him, Hugh noticed Helena by the wardrobe.

"Princess, it's an honor to meet you," Hugh quickly greeted her.

"There's no need to be so polite," Helena smiled and nodded.

Since the marriage was finalized, her personality had undergone a drastic change in just a few days.

She was no longer introverted and began to become optimistic and cheerful.

Perhaps her personality was originally like this, but she had been troubled by the prophecies in her dragon dreams.

"You are the future Queen, I should respect you as I respect Your Highness. This concerns my duty and attitude!"

Hearing this, Helena said no more, smiling as she tidied the clothes in the wardrobe for Aegon.

This should have been the maids' job, but Helena insisted on doing it herself.

"Have a seat first," Aegon said.

"I called you here to discuss something. I heard Lady Martha gave birth to another daughter for you?"

"She's a beautiful, healthy girl named Marchery, and I love her very much!"

When speaking of his daughter Marchery, Hugh's eyes softened a little.

"A daughter is good. You're quite lucky to have both a son and a daughter," Aegon laughed heartily.

Hugh did not have the idea of favoring sons over daughters, and even loved his daughter more.

However, both of them understood the importance of a male heir.

Hugh sighed.

"Shocker's condition is not very good. Archmaester Mellos said it's difficult for him to live past sixteen.

Archmaester Mellos even deduced from his current condition that whether he can live for another five years is a big question."

Aegon was silent for a moment, not knowing how to comfort Hugh.

The boy Shocker has a congenital heart defect.

With the current level of technology and magic in Westeros, delaying it until now was already using every possible means.

"Actually, I was already prepared. If it weren't for you personally going to the Citadel to seek help, Shocker might have already been taken by the Stranger."

"Don't say things like that anymore. I will provide all assistance to try and delay it for a few more years. You should also spend more time with him."

"Thank you, Your Highness!" Hugh bowed his head.

"Alright, let's not talk about this anymore. I called you here because I wanted to ask if you have any thoughts on Marchery's marriage?"

Hugh looked up blankly, his heart skipping a beat.

When he chose to follow Aegon back then, it was to pursue wealth, power, and status, to give Martha the life of a noble lady!

Later, Aegon went back and forth for Shocker, even personally going to the Citadel to find a treatment method.

Since then, he no longer solely pursued power and wealth, but dedicated himself wholeheartedly to serving Aegon!

"Your Highness, Marchery just turned one month old not long ago, so she is naturally not engaged."

"How many years have you been with me?"

"Six years, Your Highness. Thank you for your long-standing guidance!" Hugh was very serious.

From the very beginning, sword fighting, to spear fighting, riding, tactics, literacy, reading, history, geography, he learned too much.

"Six years, not long, not short. I have never given you an official position or a fief. Do you resent me?"

Aegon lay on the chair, lost in thought.

In 107 AC, he was held high by the midwife, celebrating that Viserys finally had a son.

But as Rhaenyra gradually grew up, his life was not smooth sailing.

He knew he was Rhaenyra's natural enemy. He wanted to start his plan early, but found himself restricted everywhere.

More than half of the lords in the Kingdom were required by Viserys to pledge allegiance to Rhaenyra.

So he could only study and train, doing everything possible to strengthen his mind and body first!

Later, Helena tamed Dreamfyre ahead of time, and Sunfyre grew madly, and he gradually gained confidence and began to interfere in politics in Alicent's name.

It wasn't until recently, when Aemond tamed Vhagar, that he began to openly interfere in court affairs.

He just never expected that he would be transferred away from King's Landing just by removing over twenty officials from the Black Party!

Hugh didn't know what Aegon was thinking, but he shook his head with a very firm attitude.

"I have never resented Your Highness. If it weren't for Your Highness's help, I wouldn't even have been able to keep Shocker."

"Good, it's good that you don't resent me. When I have a child, I want Marchery to marry my second son. You won't object, will you?"

Instantly, Hugh felt his heart skip a beat!

What did he hear?

Marchery?

Marrying Aegon's second son?

"Your Highness, this won't do. I am just a bastard. If you hadn't personally recruited me, I would still be blacksmithing now. Marchery is not worthy of your child!"

Hugh was a little flustered.

"Marchery is a very good girl," Helena had come to Aegon's side at some point.

"She is still so young, who knows how she will be in the future, and her status is too low."

"Status is the easiest problem to solve. When I ascend the throne, I can restore your status and let you take your mother's surname."

In the world of "A Song of Ice and Fire", it is not surprising for nobles to have bastards.

As long as the father is willing, he can acknowledge the bastard's identity and bring the bastard home. A more significant measure is legitimization, a traditional power exclusive to the monarch.

In the original work, Rhaenyra Targaryen, as Queen, legitimized the brothers Adam and Alyn from Hull in Driftmark, making them heirs of Corlys Velaryon.

And after Aegon ascends the throne, he will also have this power, and legitimizing a bastard is not difficult.

"Thank you for your kindness, Your Highness!"

Hugh knelt on one knee, his large body prostrate before Aegon.

To Hugh, any reward was not as good as restoring his mother's surname. He knew too well what the surname Targaryen meant!

"Don't get too excited. I am not the heir to the Iron Throne yet, and whether I can successfully ascend the throne in the future is a question," Aegon said with a smile.

"Your Highness is the true heir to the Iron Throne. History says so, tradition says so, rules say so!

I swear, I am willing to give everything for Your Highness, as long as it helps Your Highness ascend the throne successfully!"

"I accept your oath, Hugh, and there is something I need you to do personally!"
