Chapter 13 - Section 3: The heart part 3

As the bat continued to learn and keep his distance, he began to realize something unsettling. His cautious approach had kept him safe, but it also meant he wasn't growing as strong as the other creatures who took bigger risks. He noticed there were now three or four animals as powerful as the two he'd seen before, and that realization alarmed him. If these stronger creatures ever banded together, he knew he could be easily overpowered.

From the moment he had encountered the venomous snake, he had started to collect its venom, storing it away out of fear that he might one day need it. Now, faced with the growing threat of stronger rivals, he made a decision: he would take the risk of hunting down one of these powerful animals to gain its strength. He knew that if an alliance formed against him, it could mean the end. This was his way of ensuring he had a fighting chance. Two of the stronger animals continued to roam alone, while the other two had formed an alliance, much like the first pair he'd encountered. Knowing he needed to act on his own terms, the bat chose the cover of night, his element, his best environment, to make his move. Under the cloak of darkness, he decided to lure the newly formed alliance into a confrontation with the other two formidable creatures he knew well. By setting them against each other, he hoped to weaken them and shift the balance of power, giving himself a fighting chance in the dangerous game of survival.

He had been planning this move for quite some time now. With patience and a careful eye, the bat had mapped out the territory and figured out where each creature tended to be or at least had a rough idea. Using the venom he'd collected, he coated a few makeshift arrows, sharpened sticks he'd gathered from the trees and from the strange structures in the area.

Then, under the cover of night, he put his plan into action. He flew near one of the solo animals, spotting it through a second-floor window of a house. From above, he let the poisoned arrow fly. But the creature was quick, dodging out of the way. The bat made sure the animal saw him before he disappeared into the night, knowing that this would stir suspicion. After all, he was known to be associated with the hairy creature and the four-legged beast. By making it look like he was the attacker, he hoped to ignite a spark of tension among them all.

The bat had expected that his plan might take some time to unfold, but to his surprise, things escalated much faster than he'd imagined. Unbeknownst to him, the moment the arrow missed its target, the startled beast rushed to wake its ally. Together they began shouting and preparing for an immediate confrontation. It was a fortunate turn of events for the bat; he had worried he'd have to wait longer, but now the conflict was starting almost immediately.

He was also relieved to see that the animal hadn't taken the arrow with it, leaving no evidence behind. The last thing he wanted was for the four-legged beast or the hairy creature to find proof of his involvement. Once the two animals rushed out, the bat quickly retrieved the arrow and took to the air again. Using his echolocation, he tracked their movements from above, waiting patiently for the inevitable clash of all four beasts below.

The fight finally erupted among the four beasts, a fierce and brutal clash that sent fur and claws flying. From his vantage point, the bat watched and waited, biding his time. He had no intention of intervening just yet. Instead, he remained patient, hoping the battle would wear them down and force them to split up, leaving at least one or two vulnerable to a direct attack.

But what truly set the bat apart wasn't just his cunning; it was the loneliness that had driven him to this point. While the other creatures lived by the simple laws of the jungle, eat, sleep, survive, he had been shaped by something deeper. His solitude had bred a fear of being forever alone, and from that fear came a desperate resolve to do whatever it took to secure his place. He had learned and adapted, crafting this plan not just for power but to carve out a place where he wouldn't be outcast and vulnerable. And so, he hovered above, waiting for the perfect moment, driven by that lingering loneliness that had become his greatest motivator.
