Chapter 71: Silverscale Hatches - Part 1
POV: Corwyn Darke
The egg moved.
I sat in the incubation chamber during the evening blood ritual, palm freshly cut, droplets falling onto pale blue shell as they had hundreds of times before. But this time was different. The surface shifted beneath my blood—not the subtle warmth I'd grown accustomed to, but actual movement.

My heart stopped. Then hammered so hard I could hear blood pounding in my ears.
Cracks spiderwebbed across the shell—fine lines spreading from where my blood touched the surface, radiating outward like ice on a frozen pond. The egg rocked on its pedestal, internal force pushing against confinement that had held for over fifty years.
"Harlan!" My voice cracked with urgency I couldn't control. "HARLAN!"
The maester appeared at the chamber stairs within moments, his expression shifting from concern to shock as he saw the fracturing egg.
"My lord... it's..."
"Hatching. Get everyone else out of the Sanctum. Lock the doors. Whatever happens in this room, no one else sees it."
Harlan departed without argument. The chamber doors sealed behind him, leaving me alone with the most important moment of my life.
POV: The Hatchling (Instinct)
Trapped. Constrained. Darkness.
Something beyond the shell. Warmth. The scent of blood—not prey blood, something else. Something that called.
Push. Push harder. The wall cracks.
Light.
POV: Corwyn Darke
The shell shattered.
Pieces fell away as something inside fought free with desperate determination—wet membrane, pale scales, a head that emerged blinking into firelight. The hatchling was small—perhaps the size of a large cat—with scales that shimmered pale blue with silver undertones. Its eyes found me immediately, silver-white and ancient despite the newborn body.

[ CRITICAL: BOND ATTEMPT REQUIRED IMMEDIATELY ]
The hatchling regarded me with intelligence that shouldn't exist in a creature minutes old. It processed my presence, my scent, the blood still wet on my palm. Years of blood offerings, meditation, mental reaching—all of it building toward this single moment of recognition.
I extended my hand slowly, palm up, blood visible on the skin. My voice emerged as whisper.
"Hello. I've been waiting for you."
The dragon's head tilted, nostrils flaring as it caught the scent of my blood. It chirped—a sound somewhere between bird and serpent—and took a hesitant step toward me, tiny claws clicking against the pedestal's stone surface.
Every instinct screamed to grab it, to force connection, to ensure the bond formed before the window closed. I held myself still. Dragons weren't claimed through force—they chose. Even newborn, this creature possessed will that demanded respect.
POV: The Hatchling
The figure. The blood-scent.
Memory stirred—not true memory, but something deeper. Recognition.
This one had called. Through shell, through darkness, through waiting. This one had offered blood freely, offered warmth, offered presence.
Trust?
Uncertain. But the blood called.
POV: Corwyn Darke
Silverscale—the name came without thought, describing the creature perfectly—approached my extended hand with cautious curiosity.
The hatchling's tongue flicked out, tasting the air, tasting my blood. It paused, considering, ancient instincts processing information that would determine both our fates.
Then it licked my palm.

The connection hit like lightning through my skull—not painful, but overwhelming. Suddenly I felt... more. Hunger that wasn't mine. Confusion that echoed my own. Warmth that pulsed between us like shared heartbeat.
"He accepts me. The blood magic worked. Years of research, years of faith—and it actually worked."
"Silverscale," I whispered, voice breaking on the word. "I name you Silverscale, and I am yours as you are mine."
The hatchling chirped again, pressing its head against my palm, accepting the declaration with instinctive understanding. The bond solidified—not the instant, perfect connection Targaryens achieved through blood inheritance, but something earned through dedication. Eighty-five percent was lower than dragonlord bonds, but it was real.
I had a dragon.
POV: Maester Harlan
The chamber door opened after what felt like hours.
Harlan had paced the Sanctum's upper floors, listening for sounds from below—screams, roars, the crash of destruction. He'd heard nothing, which either meant success or failure so complete that sound itself had been consumed.
Lord Corwyn emerged carrying something cradled against his chest, his face streaked with tears he hadn't bothered to wipe away. Harlan's breath caught as he saw what his lord held.
A dragon. Small, pale blue, silver-eyed, undeniably real.
"It worked," Lord Corwyn said, voice rough with emotion. "The research, the blood magic, all of it. It worked."
"My lord..." Harlan found himself unable to form complete sentences. "You have... that's a..."
"Dragon. Yes." Lord Corwyn looked down at the hatchling, which had curled against his chest, already sleeping in the warmth of his body. "His name is Silverscale. And everything changes now."
