Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: Political Navigation Begins

Chapter 44: Political Navigation Begins

POV: Corwyn Darke

King's Landing in summer stank of ambition and decay in equal measure.

I entered the capital for what had become a semi-annual ritual—business meetings with Velaryon factors, political appearances to maintain visibility, careful navigation of the factional waters that grew more treacherous with each visit. Three years since the royal wedding, and the Greens and Blacks had hardened from rival camps into something approaching enemy nations sharing the same city.

[ 🏛️ POLITICAL ASSESSMENT ]

[ FACTION POLARIZATION: SEVERE ]

[ GREEN STRENGTH: CONSOLIDATING ]

[ BLACK STRENGTH: CONSOLIDATING ]

[ NEUTRAL LORDS: DECREASING ]

[ PRESSURE ON UNCOMMITTED: INCREASING ]

The summons to meet Queen Alicent's representatives came on my second day in the city.

The meeting took place in a private chamber off the main hall—comfortable but not intimate, official but not formal. Two men awaited me: a Hightower cousin whose name I'd already forgotten, and a court functionary who radiated careful neutrality.

"Lord Darke." The Hightower cousin gestured to a chair. "Thank you for accepting our invitation."

"How could I refuse?" I sat, arranging my expression into polite interest. "The Queen honors me with her attention."

"Her Grace has noticed your rise with interest. A minor house, transformed into regional power through competent governance. Such capability is valuable in uncertain times."

"Here it comes."

"The Queen wishes to express appreciation for your service to the realm. Your harbor has improved trade. Your training facilities have strengthened regional defense. These contributions deserve recognition."

"I serve the Crown as duty requires."

"Indeed." The cousin leaned forward slightly. "And the Crown would benefit from Lord Darke's continued service. Perhaps in a more... official capacity. A position at court, perhaps. Advisory role on matters of commerce and development."

[ ⚠️ RECRUITMENT ATTEMPT ]

[ FACTION: GREEN (HIGHTOWER) ]

[ OFFER: COURT POSITION, ADVANCEMENT ]

[ COST: IMPLIED FACTION ALIGNMENT ]

[ RECOMMENDED: DIPLOMATIC DEFLECTION ]

"The Queen's confidence honors me beyond merit." I chose words carefully. "But my responsibilities in Duskhollow require constant attention. The harbor, the training facilities, the territory administration—all demand presence that court duties would prevent."

"Surely capable subordinates could manage daily operations."

"They could manage maintenance. They cannot manage growth." I met the cousin's eyes directly. "I've built something valuable in Duskhollow. Abandoning it for court positions would diminish both my contribution to the realm and the value I might offer Her Grace."

"You decline, then?"

"I express gratitude for consideration while acknowledging practical limitations." I allowed a slight smile. "Perhaps in future years, when my domain requires less direct oversight, such opportunities might be more feasible."

The cousin's expression revealed nothing, but the functionary made a small note. I'd neither accepted nor rejected—maintained options while committing to nothing. The diplomatic dance completed, for now.

POV: Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen

Rhaenyra received Lord Darke in the Red Keep's gardens, where privacy was possible if not guaranteed.

"The Greens approached you." It wasn't a question.

"This morning. Offer of court position and implied advancement." Lord Darke walked beside her, matching her pace, neither leading nor following. "I declined without closing doors."

"Diplomatic."

"Practical. Antagonizing them gains nothing. Maintaining options costs nothing." He paused at a fountain, watching water cascade over carved dragons. "They know I'm Velaryon-aligned through business partnership. The approach was probing rather than serious recruitment."

"Otto is mapping the board." Rhaenyra's voice carried bitterness she usually concealed. "Identifying who might be turned, who must be neutralized, who can be ignored. He's been doing it for years."

"And I fall into which category?"

"Velaryon partnership makes you Black-aligned in his assessment. But you're not openly declared, which means you're still potentially convertible." Rhaenyra turned to face him directly. "Are you? Convertible?"

[ 💬 LOYALTY CONFIRMATION ]

[ RHAENYRA TARGARYEN ]

[ QUESTION: FACTION COMMITMENT ]

[ CURRENT RELATIONSHIP: 60% ]

[ STAKES: HIGH ]

"No." Lord Darke's voice was quiet but firm. "When lines are finally drawn, I stand with you. My partnership with Corlys. My relationship with you and your family. My assessment of which side offers better prospects for houses that build rather than inherit. All point the same direction."

"But you maintain public neutrality."

"For now. Open declaration serves no purpose while King Viserys lives. It would make me a target without providing corresponding benefit." He met her eyes. "When the time comes—when you need me to stand openly—I will. Until then, quiet support serves us both better."

Rhaenyra studied him for a long moment. She'd learned to read people during her years navigating court politics, and Lord Darke was harder to read than most. But she sensed genuine commitment beneath the diplomatic caution.

"Very well. Maintain your neutrality. Build your strength." She resumed walking. "But remember this conversation when the time comes."

"I will, Your Grace. I remember everything."

POV: Otto Hightower

Otto reviewed the reports on Lord Darke with his usual methodical attention.

The young lord had declined the recruitment approach—politely, diplomatically, without offense given or taken. Expected, given his Velaryon entanglement, but the approach had served its purpose. It confirmed alignment, revealed nothing unexpected, and left no lasting damage.

"He's not a threat," Otto concluded, setting aside the report. "Not yet. His domain is valuable but modest. His military is capable but limited. His ambitions appear focused on development rather than politics."

"But he's Black-aligned," his assistant noted.

"By circumstance rather than conviction. His partnership with Corlys creates economic dependency, which translates to political alignment." Otto moved to the window, surveying the city below. "If that partnership ended, his alignment might shift."

"Should we attempt to end it?"

"No. Corlys would retaliate economically, and we'd gain an enemy without corresponding benefit." Otto turned back to his desk. "Lord Darke is a minor player in the larger game. He commands perhaps three hundred soldiers, generates modest revenue, holds no strategic territory. When the time comes, he'll follow whoever his patrons follow. He's not worth the effort of direct action."

[ 👤 OTTO'S ASSESSMENT ]

[ LORD CORWYN DARKE ]

[ THREAT LEVEL: MINIMAL ]

[ ALIGNMENT: BLACK (ECONOMIC) ]

[ PRIORITY: LOW ]

[ ACTION: MONITOR, NO INTERVENTION ]

Otto filed the report and moved to more pressing matters. The game board was vast, the pieces numerous, and Lord Darke was merely one minor lord among dozens. There were more significant players to manage, more dangerous threats to address.

The young lord of Duskhollow could wait.
