Chapter 51 - Chapter 51: Welcome Home

Night

Zhiyuan stood by the front door, his arms wrapped around himself. The night air was cold through the glass. He stared at the dark road outside, waiting. Listening for footsteps. For the sound of a car. For anything.

The clock in the living room ticked loudly. Each second felt like an hour.

Dr. Shen came out of the kitchen, wiping his hands on a towel. He saw Zhiyuan standing by the door and stopped.

"Zhiyuan," he said gently. "You should sleep. It's getting late."

Zhiyuan didn't turn around. His voice was tight. "I can't sleep."

Dr. Shen walked closer. "Maybe he's stuck somewhere. Traffic or something related to Work. Or something came up."

Zhiyuan turned slowly.

Dr. Shen froze.

Zhiyuan's eyes were shining. Full of tears that hadn't fallen yet. His face was pale. His lips trembled.

"Zhiyuan..." Dr. Shen's voice softened.

"He's not picking up his calls." Zhiyuan's voice cracked. "I called him. Many times. He doesn't answer."

Dr. Shen walked to him and placed a hand on his shoulder. "Maybe his phone is dead. Maybe he's somewhere with no signal."

Zhiyuan shook his head. "I was mad at him last night. I refused to talk to him. I turned away when he tried to hold me." His voice broke. "What if he got hurt? What if something happened to him? What if he doesn't want to come back to me because I was so cold?"

"Zhiyuan—"

"I'm so scared, Dr. Shen." A tear slipped down his cheek. "I'm so scared."

Dr. Shen pulled him into a hug. He held him tight, one hand rubbing his back.

"Shh. Shh. It's okay. Everything will be okay."

"You don't know that," Zhiyuan sobbed into his shoulder. "You don't know."

"I know Yichen." Dr. Shen's voice was firm. "I know he's not the type of man to leave just because of an argument. He loves you too much for that. Give him some time. He'll come back."

Zhiyuan cried harder, his hands gripping Dr. Shen's shirt. "What if he doesn't? What if—"

Footsteps on the stairs. Guo Lian came down, rubbing his eyes. He saw Zhiyuan crying in Dr. Shen's arms and stopped.

His face changed. Worry. Anger.

"What happened?" Guo Lian asked quietly.

Dr. Shen looked at him over Zhiyuan's head. "Yichen isn't home yet. Zhiyuan's worried."

Guo Lian's jaw tightened. He walked closer, standing beside them.

He looked at Zhiyuan's shaking shoulders, his wet face. His heart clenched.

"Who's coming with me for a walk?" Guo Lian said suddenly.

Dr. Shen looked up, surprised.

Guo Lian's voice was softer now. "Star gazing sounds good. The sky is clear tonight. Cold, but clear."

Dr. Shen caught on quickly. He smiled and looked down at Zhiyuan.

"Let's go. It's been a while since we went for a walk together."

Zhiyuan pulled back, wiping his face with his sleeve. "I don't know..."

"It'll help," Guo Lian said. "Sitting here waiting will only make you worry more."

Dr. Shen nodded. "Go put on something warm. It's cold out there."

Zhiyuan looked at both of them. Their faces were kind. Worried. Wanting to help.

He nodded slowly. "Okay."

He turned and walked upstairs, his steps heavy.

Dr. Shen and Guo Lian watched him go.

The moment Zhiyuan disappeared, Guo Lian's face hardened.

"I'm going to kill Yichen," Guo Lian said, his voice low and cold.

Dr. Shen sighed. "Violence won't help."

"Zhiyuan is crying. He's sick. He's scared." Guo Lian's fists clenched. "Yichen left without a word. Won't answer his calls. He knows how much Zhiyuan worries. He knows."

Dr. Shen placed a hand on Guo Lian's arm. "We don't know what's happening. Maybe there's a reason."

"There's no reason good enough to make Zhiyuan cry like that."

Dr. Shen looked at him, seeing the protective fire in his eyes. He squeezed his arm.

"Let's focus on Zhiyuan first. We'll deal with Yichen when he comes back."

Guo Lian was quiet for a moment. Then he nodded. "Fine. But when he comes back, I'm having words with him."

Dr. Shen almost smiled. "I'll hold him down for you."

Footsteps on the stairs. Zhiyuan came down in a thick jacket, his face still red from crying. He tried to smile. It didn't reach his eyes.

"I'm ready," he said quietly.

Guo Lian nodded. "Let's go."

They walked out into the cold night, the stars bright above them, three people holding together the pieces of a family waiting for its missing member to come home.

Outside

The cold night air hit their faces as they walked onto the sand. The moon was bright, casting silver light on the waves. Stars scattered across the sky like tiny diamonds.

Zhiyuan walked between Dr. Shen and Guo Lian, his arms wrapped around himself. He was quiet, still thinking about Yichen. Still worried.

Guo Lian looked at him, then at Dr. Shen. He nodded slightly.

Dr. Shen understood. Time to distract.

"So," Dr. Shen said loudly, "Guo Lian, remember the last time we came here? You tried to catch a crab and it pinched your finger."

Guo Lian's face went stiff. "I don't remember that."

"You screamed," Dr. Shen continued, grinning. "Like a little girl."

"I did not scream."

"You jumped three feet in the air."

Guo Lian's ears turned red. "The crab was big."

Zhiyuan's lips twitched. "A crab made you scream?"

"It did not scream," Guo Lian said firmly.

"It was a very high scream," Dr. Shen added. "Very high."

Guo Lian turned to Zhiyuan, trying to save his dignity. "He's lying. Old people lie. It's a disease."

Dr. Shen gasped. "Old? I'm not old!"

"You just said you're old."

"When?"

"Five minutes ago. In the house. You said you're too old to run."

Dr. Shen opened his mouth. Closed it. "That was different."

"How?"

"It just was."

Guo Lian looked at Zhiyuan. "He has no answer. Because he's old."

Dr. Shen lunged at Guo Lian. "I'll show you old!"

Guo Lian dodged, laughing. Dr. Shen chased him a few steps, then stopped, breathing hard.

"Okay," Dr. Shen panted. "Maybe I'm a little old."

Guo Lian laughed, walking back to him. "A little?"

Dr. Shen swatted his arm. "Shut up."

Zhiyuan watched them, a small smile on his face. For a moment, he forgot to worry.

Guo Lian saw the smile. He pointed at Zhiyuan. "Your turn."

Zhiyuan blinked. "What?"

"Run. Before I catch you."

Zhiyuan shook his head. "No, I'm not—"

Guo Lian lunged. Zhiyuan yelped and ran. His feet splashed in the shallow water. He laughed, surprised at himself.

Guo Lian chased him down the beach, both of them kicking up sand and water. Zhiyuan's laugh echoed across the waves.

"You're slow!" Guo Lian called.

"I'm not!" Zhiyuan ran faster, laughing harder.

Guo Lian caught up easily and grabbed his arm. Zhiyuan spun, trying to escape. They wrestled playfully, both laughing now.

"Let go!"

They stumbled, still holding each other, and fell together in the sand. Right at Dr. Shen's feet.

Sand sprayed everywhere. Dr. Shen got the worst of it.

He stood there, covered in sand, staring down at the two laughing idiots on the ground.

"Really," Dr. Shen said flatly.

Zhiyuan looked up, still laughing. "Sorry!"

Guo Lian grinned, not sorry at all. "He fell on me."

"You fell on me!" Zhiyuan pushed his shoulder.

"Both of you fell on me," Dr. Shen said. "With sand. Lots of sand. In my hair and in my mouth."

Zhiyuan and Guo Lian looked at each other. Then, together, they reached up and pulled Dr. Shen down.

He landed on top of them with a grunt. "You two are—"

"Old?" Guo Lian offered.

"I was going to say impossible."

Zhiyuan laughed, really laughed, his whole body shaking.

They lay there in the sand, tangled together, all three of them laughing. The stars shone down. The waves whispered.

Dr. Shen looked at Zhiyuan's face, bright with laughter, free from worry. His heart swelled.

There he is, Dr. Shen thought. There's our Zhiyuan.

Guo Lian caught his eye and smiled. They had done it. They had brought him back, even just for a moment.

Zhiyuan sat up, brushing sand from his hair. "My stomach hurts from laughing."

"That's good," Dr. Shen said, sitting up too. "Means you're alive."

Zhiyuan looked at him, something soft in his eyes. "Thank you. Both of you. For this."

Guo Lian shrugged, standing and brushing himself off. "We needed fresh air."

Zhiyuan smiled, knowing it was more than that. "Right. Fresh air."

They walked back toward the house, slower now, the laughter fading into comfortable quiet.

Dr. Shen looked at the sky. "The stars are beautiful tonight."

Zhiyuan looked up. "Yeah. They are."

Guo Lian walked beside them, quiet, watching. He saw Zhiyuan's face, still a little sad around the edges, but lighter. He saw Dr. Shen's hand brush Zhiyuan's arm, steadying him.

This is family, Guo Lian thought. This is what family is.

They reached the house. Zhiyuan paused at the door, looking back at the ocean.

"He'll come back," Zhiyuan said quietly. More to himself than to them.

Dr. Shen put a hand on his back. "Yes. He will."

Zhiyuan nodded, took a breath, and walked inside.

Behind him, Dr. Shen and Guo Lian shared a look. Worry still there, but hope too.

They followed him in, closing the door on the cold night, leaving the stars to watch over the sea until their missing piece came home.

Three Days Later

Three days passed. Yichen did not come back.

Zhiyuan stayed in his room. He didn't eat much. He didn't sleep much. He just sat by the window, staring at the road, waiting for a figure that never appeared.

Dr. Shen brought food to his door. Sometimes Zhiyuan ate a little. Sometimes he didn't.

"Zhiyuan, please eat something," Dr. Shen said through the door on the third evening.

No answer.

"Zhiyuan."

"I'm not hungry." The voice was small....

Dr. Shen sighed, setting the tray down. He walked downstairs to where Guo Lian waited.

"He won't eat," Dr. Shen said, worry heavy in his voice.

Guo Lian's jaw tightened. "I'll find Yichen. I'll drag him back myself."

"We don't even know where he is."

Guo Lian was quiet. His fists clenched.

Dr. Shen sat down, suddenly feeling very old. "I'm scared, Guo Lian. Not just for Zhiyuan. For all of us. Something is wrong. Yichen wouldn't just leave like this."

Guo Lian sat beside him, taking his hand. "We'll figure it out. We always do."

Day Four – Morning

Zhiyuan woke up to silence.

Not the usual morning sounds. No footsteps. No voices. No kettle whistling.

Just silence.

He sat up slowly, his body weak from days of not eating. He looked at the door. Something felt wrong.

He got up and walked downstairs. The kitchen was empty. The table was clean. No breakfast. No tea. No sign that anyone had been there.

"Dr. Shen?" Zhiyuan called. "Guo Lian?"

No answer.

He checked every room. Empty. He went outside. The clinic door was locked. The windows were dark.

His heart started to pound.

He pulled out his phone and called Dr. Shen. No answer. He called Guo Lian. No answer. He called Yichen. No answer.

His hands were shaking now. He called again. And again.

Nothing.

He walked back toward the house, his mind racing. Where are they? Why isn't anyone answering? What happened?

He was halfway down the path when something dropped over his head. Black cloth. Thick. Heavy.

He couldn't see. Couldn't breathe.

He struggled, kicking, pushing, but the hands holding him were strong. Too strong. Multiple hands. Rough hands.

"Let me go!" Zhiyuan screamed, his voice muffled by the cloth. "Help! Someone help!"

No one came. The village was quiet. Too quiet.

He felt himself being lifted, carried, thrown into a car. The door slammed. The engine started.

Zhiyuan's chest heaved. Tears soaked into the cloth over his face. His mind was a storm of fear.

They're gone. Everyone is gone.

He thought of Dr. Shen's gentle voice. Guo Lian's quiet strength. Yichen's arms around him.

What if they're hurt? What if they're...

He couldn't finish the thought. His body shook with silent sobs.

The car drove on. Zhiyuan didn't know where. He didn't know how long. He just sat there, bound and blind, drowning in the worst fear of his life.

Please let them be okay. Please. I'll do anything. Just let them be okay.

The car kept moving. The road stretched on. And Zhiyuan, alone and terrified, could only wait.

The car stopped. Rough hands grabbed Zhiyuan's arms, pulling him out. His feet stumbled on uneven ground. He couldn't see. Couldn't breathe. The cloth was tight over his face, suffocating.

He was led somewhere. Inside somewhere. The air changed. Cooler. Echoing. A large space. A warehouse maybe. A hall. He couldn't tell.

Then the hands let go. He heard footsteps walking away. Doors closing.

Silence.

Zhiyuan stood there, shaking, blind, alone.

A moment passed. Another.

Then hands—gentle hands—touched the cloth at the back of his head. The fabric loosened. Slid away.

Light. Dim. Soft. Candles. Hundreds of candles. Flickering in the darkness like stars brought down to earth.

Zhiyuan blinked, his eyes adjusting. He was in a large empty room. Candles everywhere. On the floor. On tables. Floating in glass bowls. The walls were draped in white fabric, soft and flowing. Flowers hung from the ceiling, white petals drifting down like snow.

But no one was there.

Empty. Silent. Just the candles and the petals and the soft glow.

Zhiyuan's breath caught in his throat. His heart pounded.

"Yichen?" he whispered.

Nothing.

"Yichen!" Louder now. Desperate. "Where are you? What is this?"

Silence.

Then a voice. From the darkness behind him. Deep. Soft. Shaking.

"Zhiyuan."

He spun around. No one there.

"Zhiyuan, my love."

The voice came from everywhere. From the walls. From the ceiling. From the very air around him.

"Yichen!" Zhiyuan's voice cracked. "Where are you? What's happening? I've been so scared. Where is everyone? Where is Dr. Shen? Guo Lian? Where have you been? Why did you leave me?"

The voice spoke again, softer now. "They're safe. They're outside. Waiting. They helped me set this up. They helped me because they love you too. Because they wanted you to have this moment. A moment just for you. Just for us."

Zhiyuan's knees felt weak. "Yichen..."

"I've been gone four days. Four days of planning. Four days of thinking. Four days of trying to find the right words." A pause. "I couldn't find them. There aren't enough words in any language to tell you what you mean to me. So I'll just... speak. From my heart. And hope you hear me."

The candles flickered. A soft breeze moved through the room, stirring the petals on the floor.

"When I was young," Yichen's voice said, "I thought love was a weakness. Something that got people killed. Something that made you soft. I watched men die for love. I watched men kill for love. I decided I would never let it touch me. I would be hard. Cold. Untouchable."

Zhiyuan listened, tears already forming in his eyes.

"I did terrible things, Zhiyuan. Things I can never undo. Things that haunt me every night. I was a monster. I walked in darkness. I thought I belonged there."

The voice moved, circling him, coming from all sides.

"Then I met you. You were drowning in your own darkness. Poisoned by people who should have loved you. Alone in a mansion full of enemies. And I was sent to protect you. That was my job. That was all it was supposed to be."

A pause. The petals swirled.

"But then you smiled at me. The first time. A small smile. Tired. Scared. But real. And something in me cracked. Something I thought was dead. Something I didn't know was still there."

Zhiyuan pressed a hand to his chest. His heart was racing.

"You were so brave, Zhiyuan. Even when you were scared. Even when the poison was eating you from inside. You never gave up. You never became cruel like they were. You stayed kind. You stayed soft. You stayed good. And I watched you, night after night, thinking... this man is made of light. How can someone made of light love someone made of shadows?"

A tear slipped down Zhiyuan's cheek.

"I tried to stay away. I tried to be professional. Just a bodyguard. Just a soldier. But you kept pulling me in. With your stubbornness. Your strength. Your gentle heart. And one night, when you were shaking from withdrawal, and you held my hand and said 'don't leave me'... I knew. I was already gone. I was already yours."

Yichen's voice broke slightly. "I've been yours ever since."

Zhiyuan covered his mouth, sobbing quietly.

"I've hurt you, Zhiyuan. I've lied to you. I've kept secrets. I've been jealous. I've been stupid. I made you cry. I made you doubt. I made you scared. And every time, I hated myself more. Because you deserve none of that. You deserve someone who is good. Someone who has never been what I am. Someone who can give you the world without the shadows following behind."

The candles flickered. A soft glow gathered in the center of the room.

"But I can't let you go. I've tried. I've tried to imagine my life without you and I can't. There is no life without you, Zhiyuan. You are the first thing I think of when I wake up. The last thing I think of when I sleep. You are in every breath I take. Every heartbeat. Every thought."

Zhiyuan walked slowly toward the center of the room, following the glow.

"I was so scared to love you. Because love means losing. Love means someone can take you away. Love means I have something precious that the world can destroy. And I've already lost so much. I didn't think I could survive losing you."

A single spotlight appeared in the center of the room. Yichen stood there.

Not the Yichen from the pier with his old men and his hard face. Not the Yichen from the past, cold and dangerous.

This Yichen was dressed simply. White shirt. Dark pants. His hands were clasped in front of him. His one eye was wet with tears. His face was open. Raw. Vulnerable.

Zhiyuan stopped a few feet away, staring at him.

"But I realized something these four days," Yichen continued, his voice trembling. "I realized I've been running from love my whole life. From fear. From the past. And all it did was hurt us both. I left because I was scared. Scared of the inheritance. Scared of the money. Scared that taking it would turn me back into that person. The one who hurt people. The one who was a monster."

He took a shaky breath.

"I took the inheritance, Zhiyuan. Zhenlong left me everything. His properties. His shares. His wealth. I didn't tell you because I was ashamed. Because I thought it made me dirty. Because I thought you would see me and see the old me, the one from the videos, the one who did bad things."

Zhiyuan's tears fell freely now. He didn't wipe them away.

"I was going to give it all away. Burn it. Throw it in the ocean. Because I didn't want it to touch us. I didn't want to be that person anymore. But then I thought... what if I could use it for good? What if I could use it to build something? Something clean. Something for us. Something that could help people. A foundation. A shelter. Something that would make Zhenlong proud. Something that would make you proud."

He took a step closer.

"I'm still scared, Zhiyuan. Every day I'm scared. Scared I'll fail you. Scared I'll become that person again. Scared that one day you'll wake up and realize you deserve better. And you do. You deserve so much better than me."

Another step.

"But I'm done running. I'm done hiding. I'm done letting fear make choices for me. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. You are the reason I want to be good. You are the light that pulled me out of darkness. And I will spend every day of the rest of my life trying to be worthy of you."

He reached into his pocket. His hand trembled.

Zhiyuan's breath caught.

Yichen pulled out a small box. Simple. Wooden. He opened it with shaking fingers.

Inside, two rings. Simple bands. Silver. Matching. No diamonds. No jewels. Just silver. Just circles. Just promises.

"I don't have a big diamond ring," Yichen said, tears streaming down his face. "I don't have a grand speech. I don't have a perfect past or a clean future. All I have is this heart. Beaten, broken, bruised. But it's yours. It's always been yours. From the moment you smiled at me in that dark room, it's been yours."

He knelt down. On both knees. In front of Zhiyuan. In the candlelight. Among the white petals falling like snow.

"Liang Zhiyuan," he said, his voice raw, "I love you. I love your stubbornness. I love your kindness. I love the way you laugh when you're trying to be mad. I love the way you hold my hand when you think I'm sleeping. I love the way you care about people. The way you see the good in everyone. The way you saw the good in me when no one else did."

He held out the box.

"I promise to always be honest with you. Even when it's hard. I promise to never let fear make me run again. I promise to protect you, to cherish you, to annoy you every morning with kisses until you laugh. I promise to use what I've been given to build something good. Something for us. Something for others. I promise to spend every day trying to be the man you deserve."

His voice cracked completely.

"Will you marry me?"

Silence. The candles flickered. The petals fell.

Zhiyuan stood there, tears streaming, heart so full it felt like it would burst. He looked at Yichen on his knees. Yichen who had been a monster. Yichen who had been a bodyguard. Yichen who had been scared and broken and lost. Yichen who had found him in the darkness and loved him when no one else could.

He took a step forward. Then another. He reached out and took the box from Yichen's trembling hands.

"You're an idiot," Zhiyuan whispered.

Yichen's face fell. "I—"

"You left for four days." Zhiyuan's voice shook. "You didn't answer your phone. You made me think you were dead. You made me think you left me. You made me so scared I couldn't eat. I couldn't sleep. I thought I lost you."

"I'm sorry—"

"You're the biggest idiot in the world." Zhiyuan knelt down, facing him. "Of course I'll marry you."

Yichen's eyes went wide. "What?"

"You think I want a big diamond ring? You think I want a perfect man with a perfect past?" Zhiyuan laughed through his tears. "I want you. I want your stupid face every morning. I want your annoying kisses. I want your terrible jokes. I want you coming home late with fish and dirt on your hands because you were working too hard to buy me things I don't need."

He grabbed Yichen's face, holding it between his hands.

"I want you, Chen Yichen. All of you. The monster. The bodyguard. The fisherman. The man who grows plants on the balcony and fixes bracelets he broke because he was jealous. I want you. Only you. Forever."

Yichen's face crumpled. He pulled Zhiyuan into his arms, holding him so tight neither of them could breathe.

"I love you," Yichen sobbed into his hair. "I love you so much. I'm sorry. I'm sorry I left. I'm sorry I scared you. I'm sorry I'm so stupid."

Zhiyuan held him just as tight. "You are stupid. But you're my stupid. And I'm never letting you go again."

They stayed there, kneeling in the candlelight, petals falling around them like snow. Two broken people. Two hearts that had found each other in the darkness. Two souls that had decided, finally, to stop running.

Yichen pulled back just enough to take one ring from the box. His hands shook as he slid it onto Zhiyuan's finger.

Zhiyuan took the other ring and put it on Yichen's hand.

"I promise," Zhiyuan said, looking into Yichen's eye, "to love you every day. Even when you're being stupid. Especially when you're being stupid."

Yichen laughed, crying, kissing Zhiyuan's hands, his wrists, his face.

"I promise," Yichen said, "to be worthy of you. Every day. For the rest of my life."

They kissed. In the candlelight. Among the petals. In the silence of the room that held their pasts and their futures.

When they pulled apart, the lights came up. Music started. Soft. Sweet.

And from behind the curtains, Dr. Shen, Guo Lian, Lin Wei, and Xiao Xue burst out, clapping and crying and laughing all at once.

Zhiyuan looked up, startled. "You were all here?"

Xiao Xue ran forward, crying happily. "We helped set it up! We were behind the curtains the whole time! I was about to jump out ten times!"

Dr. Shen walked forward, his eyes wet. He pulled both Zhiyuan and Yichen into a hug.

"About time," he said gruffly. "I was getting tired of waiting."

Guo Lian stood behind him, smiling. He caught Yichen's eye and nodded. A nod of respect. Of forgiveness. Of welcome.

Lin Wei was wiping his eyes, pretending he wasn't crying. "This was the most romantic thing I've ever seen. I hate you both."

Zhiyuan laughed, reaching out to pull Lin Wei into the hug too.

They stood there, all of them, holding each other, the rings warm on their fingers, the candles burning low, the petals still falling.

Yichen looked at Zhiyuan, at his family, at the life they had built from nothing.

"I feel like I'm home," he whispered.

Zhiyuan squeezed his hand. "Welcome home."
