Chapter 43 - Chapter 43: Home

Few Months Later – Xiapu Village

The morning sun rose over the calm ocean, painting the sky in soft pink and orange. A small house stood near the beach, simple and peaceful. Beside it, a small clinic with a sign that read "Xiapu Community Health."

Inside the house, in a cozy bedroom, Zhiyuan stirred under the warm blanket. He yawned, stretching his arms.

He tried to get up.

A strong arm pulled him back down.

"Mm... five more minutes," Yichen mumbled, burying his face in Zhiyuan's back.

Zhiyuan sighed. "Yichen, let me go. I need to use the bathroom."

"No."

"Yichen."

"No."

"I really have to go."

Yichen hugged him tighter. "Hold it."

Zhiyuan groaned but didn't fight. He relaxed into the warmth, a small smile on his face. After a moment, he spoke softly.

"You know, I had a dream last night."

Yichen opened one eye. "What dream?"

"I saw my dad. Wenhao." Zhiyuan's voice was peaceful. "And Zhenlong. They were together in this small house, like ours. They looked so happy."

Yichen listened quietly.

"They said they were proud of me. Happy to see me finally living my life. Not running a company. Not fighting. Just... living."

Yichen smiled, reaching up to gently stroke Zhiyuan's cheek. "That's beautiful, bao bei."

Zhiyuan turned to face him. "We should visit them someday. Their graves. Bring flowers. Talk to them."

"I'd like that." Yichen's eyes got a little misty. "I miss my boss too. Even his complaints. Especially his complaints."

Zhiyuan giggled. "You miss him yelling at you?"

"I miss everything." Yichen pulled him closer. "He was like a father to me too."

They lay quietly for a moment, holding each other. Then Zhiyuan squirmed.

"Okay, that's enough. Let me go now or I'm really going to pee on this bed."

Yichen laughed. "You wouldn't."

"Try me."

Yichen sat up quickly and scooped Zhiyuan into his arms. "Fine! But we do our morning routine together!"

Zhiyuan's face turned bright red. "YICHEN! Put me down! I can walk!"

"No! This is faster!"

"Let me GO!" Zhiyuan kicked his legs, laughing despite himself. "You're impossible!"

They stumbled out of the bedroom, Yichen carrying a flustered, laughing Zhiyuan toward the bathroom.

Downstairs – Kitchen

The kitchen was warm and smelled delicious. Guo Lian stood at the stove, flipping pancakes with one hand while stirring eggs with the other. He moved carefully, still recovering from his injuries, but getting stronger every day.

Dr. Shen walked around the table, arranging plates and cups. He hummed softly, a happy sound.

"The eggs need salt," Dr. Shen said without looking.

Guo Lian glanced at him. "I already added salt."

"Not enough."

Guo Lian's lips twitched. "You always say that."

"Because you always under-salt."

Guo Lian added more salt. Dr. Shen nodded approvingly.

"Better."

Guo Lian set the pan down and walked over to Dr. Shen. He wrapped his arms around him from behind, resting his chin on his shoulder.

"You're bossy in the morning," Guo Lian murmured.

Dr. Shen leaned back against him. "Someone has to be. You'd burn the kitchen without me."

"Would not."

"Would too."

They stood like that for a moment, enjoying the quiet.

Then loud noises came from upstairs. Yichen's laugh. Zhiyuan's protests. A door slamming.

Dr. Shen smiled. "They're awake."

Guo Lian nodded. "Sounds like a normal morning."

Yichen came bounding down the stairs, still grinning. Zhiyuan followed, face red, trying to look annoyed but failing.

"Morning!" Yichen announced. "What's for breakfast? I'm starving!"

Guo Lian pointed at the food. "Pancakes. Eggs. Fruit."

Zhiyuan sat at the table, still pouting slightly. "He's so annoying in the morning."

Dr. Shen chuckled. "You love it."

"I do not."

Yichen kissed his cheek loudly. "You do too."

Zhiyuan's pout melted into a smile. "Fine. Maybe a little."

They all sat down together. The table was small but full. Food, laughter, love.

Outside, the ocean waves crashed gently. Inside, a family ate breakfast together, healing slowly, living peacefully, finally free.

Dr. Shen looked around the table. At Guo Lian, focused on his food but glancing at him with soft eyes. At Yichen, shoveling pancakes like he hadn't eaten in weeks. At Zhiyuan, laughing at something Yichen said, genuine happiness on his face.

"This is nice," Dr. Shen said quietly.

Guo Lian looked at him. "Yeah. It is."

Across the table, Yichen caught Zhiyuan's hand under the table. Squeezed it.

Zhiyuan squeezed back.

The nightmare was over. The healing had begun. And in this small village by the sea, they had finally found what they'd been fighting for all along.

Home.

After breakfast, Dr shen and guo lian left for clinic, Zhiyuan started clearing the table. He stacked plates and carried them to the kitchen counter.

Yichen's phone rang. He looked at the screen.

"The fishing group," he said. He answered quickly. "Yeah? Okay. Got it. I'll be there in a few minutes."

He hung up and stood, already grabbing his jacket. He walked quickly toward Zhiyuan, who was at the counter rinsing plates.

Yichen spun him around and pinned him gently against the counter, capturing his lips in a deep kiss. His hands held Zhiyuan's waist. The kiss was hungry, desperate, like he needed it to breathe.

Zhiyuan pushed at his chest, laughing against his lips. He pulled back just enough to speak.

"Is this necessary every single morning?"

Yichen grinned, already nuzzling into his neck. "This is my energy booster. Without this, how am I supposed to work all day?"

Zhiyuan looked up at him, eyes soft with love and worry. He reached up and touched Yichen's face gently.

"Be careful," he whispered.

Yichen pulled back and flexed his arm, showing off his muscles. "Don't worry. You know I'm strong."

Zhiyuan didn't smile. His eyes stayed serious.

"Why... why do you have to work so hard?" His voice was quiet. "You know Dr. Shen said there's always a place for you at the clinic. You could help him there. No need to work such a difficult job."

Yichen smiled softly, touching his cheek. "Don't worry, bao bei. I love doing what I—"

"I don't want to eat high quality meat," Zhiyuan interrupted, words tumbling out. "I'm fine with cheap meat. Meat is meat. Hell, I don't even need meat! Who cares about high quality milk? Fresh expensive fruits? I'm okay with just bread and water."

His eyes glistened.

"Just... don't work so hard. Please."

Yichen's expression softened. He cupped Zhiyuan's face in both hands, thumbs stroking his cheeks.

"As long as I'm with you, you will never have to eat just bread and water." His voice was firm but gentle. "You deserve more than that. You already settled for a cramped bed in a small house. You gave up your company, your mansion, your old life. That's enough. Let me take care of the rest."

Zhiyuan shook his head. "But still... I don't like it. You come home exhausted. Your hands are always cut from the nets. I—"

Yichen's phone rang again.

He glanced at it, sighed. "I'm sorry, bao bei. I really have to go."

He leaned in and kissed her one last time. Soft. Sweet. A promise.

Then he grabbed his bag and walked out the door.

Zhiyuan stood at the counter, watching him go. His hand touched his lips where Yichen had kissed him.

"I just want you safe," he whispered to the empty kitchen.

The door closed. Yichen was gone.

Zhiyuan turned back to the dishes, heart heavy, love overflowing, worry eating at him.

Outside, Yichen walked toward the village center, toward the boat, toward another long day of hard work.

He touched his chest, where his heart beat strong.

I'll give you everything, he thought. Even if it kills me.

He didn't say it out loud. But it was true. It would always be true.

At the Clinic – Morning

The small clinic was bright with morning sun. Dr. Shen stood at the counter, sorting through papers. Bills. Supply lists. Appointment schedules.

Guo Lian walked in carrying a heavy box. He set it down carefully on the examination table.

"New medicines arrived," Guo Lian said, opening the box.

Dr. Shen glanced up. "Good. Check them against the list. Make sure everything is there."

Guo Lian pulled out a paper from the box. "I have the list."

He started taking out bottles and boxes, reading labels, checking them off. His movements were slow but steady. His wound still bothered him sometimes, but he never complained.

Dr. Shen watched him from the corner of his eye. The way his brow furrowed in concentration. The way his lips moved slightly as he read the medicine names. The way the morning light caught his face.

"You're staring," Guo Lian said without looking up.

Dr. Shen's cheeks warmed. He quickly looked back at his papers. "I was not staring."

"You were."

"Was not."

Guo Lian looked up, a small smile on his face. "You were. It's okay. I don't mind."

Dr. Shen huffed, shuffling papers. "Finish checking those medicines. We have patients coming at nine."

"Yes, Doctor."

Guo Lian returned to his work, but the smile stayed. Dr. Shen tried to focus on the bills, but his eyes kept drifting back.

A few minutes passed in comfortable silence.

"These antibiotics are expired," Guo Lian said, holding up a bottle.

Dr. Shen walked over to look. "Let me see." He took the bottle, examined the date. "You're right. Set them aside. I'll contact the supplier."

Guo Lian nodded and placed the bottle on a separate pile. Dr. Shen stood close, reading another label. Their shoulders brushed.

Neither moved away.

"This one is good," Dr. Shen said, voice slightly softer. "Put it in the cabinet."

Guo Lian took the bottle and turned to the cabinet behind him. Dr. Shen stayed close, watching him organize the shelves.

"You put the painkillers on the wrong shelf again," Dr. Shen said.

Guo Lian paused. "They're fine there."

"They need to be on the top shelf. Away from children."

"There are no children here."

"Rules are rules."

Guo Lian sighed but moved the bottles to the top shelf. Dr. Shen nodded approvingly.

"Better."

Guo Lian turned to face him. They were very close now. Inches apart.

"Anything else, Doctor?" Guo Lian's voice was low.

Dr. Shen's breath caught. He looked up at Guo Lian's face. Those eyes that used to be so cold, now soft and warm. For him.

"Stop calling me Doctor," Dr. Shen whispered.

"What should I call you?"

Dr. Shen didn't answer. He just leaned up and pressed his lips to Guo Lian's.

The kiss was soft. Gentle. Full of all the things words couldn't say.

When they pulled apart, Guo Lian's face was slightly pink. It made him look younger. Softer.

"You're blushing," Dr. Shen said, amused.

"I don't blush."

"You're blushing right now."

Guo Lian looked away, but he was smiling. "The medicines need organizing."

Dr. Shen laughed softly. "Okay. But we're finishing this conversation later."

He walked back to the counter, but his hand brushed Guo Lian's as he passed. A small touch. A promise.

Guo Lian watched him go, heart full, before turning back to the medicine box.

The morning continued. Quiet. Peaceful. Full of small touches and shared glances.

At nine, the first patient arrived. An old woman with a cough. Dr. Shen examined her while Guo Lian prepared medicine.

"Two times a day," Dr. Shen told her. "After food. Come back if it gets worse."

The woman nodded, smiling at both of them. "You two work so well together. Like you've been doing this for years."

Dr. Shen glanced at Guo Lian. Guo Lian glanced back.

"Thank you, Auntie," Dr. Shen said.

After she left, Guo Lian spoke quietly. "She's right. We do work well together."

Dr. Shen smiled. "Yeah. We do."

They stood there, in their small clinic, in their small village, living their small life.

And it was perfect.

At Home – Morning

Zhiyuan stood in the small living room, looking around. Dishes done. Kitchen clean. Now the rest of the house needed attention.

He grabbed a broom and started sweeping. The floor was small, so it didn't take long. Then he dusted the shelves. Folded the blankets on the couch. Opened the windows to let fresh air in.

It wasn't a mansion. It wasn't fancy. But it was theirs.

He moved to the bedroom. Made the bed carefully, smoothing out every wrinkle. Fluffed the pillows. Picked up Yichen's shirt from the floor and smiled, holding it for a moment before folding it.

"You're messy," he said to the empty room.

But he was smiling.

He put the shirt in the drawer and looked around. The room was simple. A bed. A small closet. One window with a view of the ocean.

Zhiyuan walked to the window and looked out. The water sparkled in the morning sun. Fishing boats moved slowly on the horizon.

Somewhere out there, Yichen was on one of those boats. Working hard. Getting hurt. Coming home exhausted.

Zhiyuan's smile faded.

He touched the glass. "I just want you safe."

He stood there for a long moment, watching the ocean, thinking about the man he loved.

Then he shook himself and got back to work.

---

In the bathroom, he scrubbed the sink and toilet. Small space, quick to clean. He wiped the mirror and saw his reflection.

Different from the old days. No expensive suits. No perfect hair. Just a man in simple clothes, sleeves rolled up, hands wet from cleaning.

He looked... happy. Tired, but happy.

He smiled at himself. "Not bad, Liang Zhiyuan. Not bad at all."

---

Back in the living room, he arranged the few decorations they had. A small plant on the windowsill. A photo on the shelf—all of them together at the beach. Dr. Shen and Guo Lian standing close. Xiao Xue making a funny face. Miss Zhang trying to look serious but smiling. Yichen with his arm around Zhiyuan, both laughing at something.

His favorite photo.

He touched the glass gently. "We made it," he whispered. "We actually made it."

The door opened.

Zhiyuan turned, expecting Yichen. But it was Dr. Shen.

"Knock knock," Dr. Shen said, smiling. "Guo Lian is watching the clinic. Thought I'd check on you."

Zhiyuan smiled. "I'm fine. Just cleaning."

Dr. Shen walked in, looking around. "Place looks good. You're getting good at this."

"Had to learn. No more maids."

Dr. Shen sat on the couch. "How are you really?"

Zhiyuan sat beside him. "I'm okay. Worried about Yichen. He works too hard."

"He's stubborn. Like someone else I know."

Zhiyuan laughed softly. "Yeah. I guess."

Dr. Shen put a hand on his shoulder. "He's strong. He'll be fine. And he has you to come home to. That's what matters."

Zhiyuan nodded, leaning against him slightly. "I know. I just... I wish he'd let me help more."

"He will. Give him time." Dr. Shen squeezed his shoulder. "You both went through a lot. Healing takes time."

They sat quietly, watching the ocean through the window.

"You want to help at the clinic?" Dr. Shen asked. "I could use an extra pair of hands. Organizing files. Answering calls. Nothing too hard."

Zhiyuan looked at him. "You'd let me?"

"Of course. If you want."

Zhiyuan smiled, really smiled. "I'd like that. I need something to do. Something useful."

"Good. Start tomorrow." Dr. Shen stood. "Now come on. Guo Lian ordered too much lunch again. You're eating with us."

Zhiyuan laughed and stood. "He always do that"

"He's feeding you. That's how he shows love."

They walked out together, locking the door behind them. The small house stood quiet, clean, waiting for Yichen to come home.

The day passed quietly. The sun began to set, painting the sky in orange and pink. Dinner time came.

Everyone gathered around the small dining table. Dr. Shen served the food. Guo Lian helped with plates. Zhiyuan sat down, but his eyes kept drifting to the door.

Empty.

Yichen's chair sat empty.

Minutes passed. The food grew cold on plates.

Zhiyuan stared at the door. His hands were in his lap. He didn't touch his food.

Guo Lian noticed. He stood up quietly and pulled out his phone. Walked to the corner. Dialed.

They could hear his low voice, but not the words.

He came back and sat down. Looked at Zhiyuan.

"Yichen said he's still working. Will take more time. He won't come for dinner tonight."

Zhiyuan's head lifted slowly. His voice was soft, but there was pain in it.

"Again?"

The word hung in the air.

Dr. Shen put his chopsticks down. He looked at Zhiyuan with concern. "What is he doing? Working this late every day?"

Zhiyuan shook his head slightly. "It's okay. He's working hard. For us."

"It's not okay." Dr. Shen's voice was gentle but firm. "You need to eat. When he comes back, you can scold him. But right now, you eat."

Zhiyuan looked at the food. Rice. Fish. Vegetables. Good food. The kind Yichen worked so hard to provide.

He couldn't.

His stomach felt tight. How could he eat such nice food when Yichen was somewhere out there, working in the dark, probably hungry too?

"I'll eat later," Zhiyuan said quietly. He stood up. "When he comes home."

Dr. Shen reached for his arm. "Zhiyuan, please. Just a little—"

"I'll eat when he comes." Zhiyuan pulled away gently. His eyes were sad but firm. "I'm not hungry right now."

He walked away from the table. Toward the door. Toward the dark outside.

"Zhiyuan!" Dr. Shen called.

But Zhiyuan just opened the door and stepped out, closing it softly behind him.

Dr. Shen sat back, worried. He looked at Guo Lian.

Guo Lian met his eyes. Both were thinking the same thing.

"He's getting too attached," Dr. Shen said quietly. "I mean... I know they love each other. But Zhiyuan... he can't even eat without Yichen anymore."

Guo Lian nodded slowly. "I noticed too. He waits for him. Worries constantly. Barely eats when Yichen is gone."

"What if something happens to Yichen one day?" Dr. Shen's voice was small. Scared. "What would Zhiyuan do?"

Guo Lian reached across the table and took his hand. Squeezed.

"Don't think like that. They're both healing. This is part of it." He paused. "I'll talk to Yichen. Make him understand. He needs to come home earlier. For Zhiyuan."

Dr. Shen nodded, but worry stayed on his face.

"He's become everything to Zhiyuan," Dr. Shen whispered. "Everything."

Guo Lian squeezed his hand again. "I know. That's why we have to take care of both of them."

They sat there, food untouched, worried about the two young men who had been through so much.

Outside, Zhiyuan sat on the small porch, hugging his knees, staring at the dark.

Waiting.

Always waiting.
