Chapter 61 - I Went Back For it

"Callum is that you?" I took an unsure step forward my heart slamming in my chest.

I stood at the mouth of that dead-end alley with Nora against my chest and stared at him, waited for him to disappear the way things did when you were exhausted and frightened and your mind started producing what it needed instead of what was actually there.

He didn't disappear, instead he inched closer towards me.

He was thinner than I remembered. His face was leaner, the angles of it sharper, and there was a scar along his jaw that I didn't recognize. It was pale and slightly raised and added a slight ruggedness to his features.

But his expression when he looked at me was exactly the same as it had always been. Open. Warm. And immediately, completely concerned.

"Yeah," he said quietly, his voice more hoarse than I remember. "It's me."
