Chapter Twenty-Eight – Paranormal Realm 26
The knock came again.
This time, Rowan didn't jump.
He stared at the door for a long second, heart still beating faster than normal, then finally said, "Come in."
The door opened slowly, and Maxx stepped inside.
He didn't barge in. Didn't grin like he usually did when he was about to tease Rowan. Instead, he closed the door carefully behind him and leaned back against it, arms crossed loosely over his chest as his sharp eyes swept the room.
Rowan noticed it immediately.
Maxx was… cautious.
That alone made Rowan sit up straighter.
"So," Maxx said at last, voice light but measured. "Your parents sent me."
Rowan let out a small breath. "I figured."
"They told me to stay with you tonight,"
Maxx continued. "Said it would be better if you weren't alone."
Rowan nodded, fingers tightening briefly in the bedsheets. "That sounds like them."
