Chapter 2 - Tournament

A worm squirmed on the ground. Above in the sky, a dove's sharp eyes focused on it. After an hour of carefully observing his environment, Gabriel had finally found a prey he could kill without risking death.

He used his lunge skill to dive from the sky and seize the warm with his talons. He felt it go through the worm's flesh. It squirmed against his hold, still moving despite having two claws going through its body. Gabriel pecked the worm over and over again until it became an unrecognizable goo.

Eat your prey ]

Gabriel stared at the screen that had popped up, then at the smelly goo of worm flesh and weird blood. Meh, food is food. Gabriel had eaten worst thing, as his siblings and half-siblings often found it amusing to force-feed him dead rats or insects. It was the least hurtful thing they ever did to him. Gabriel had, instead of letting it bother him, developed a taste for a specific brand of spider.

The worm's corpse melted in his mouth like a buttery steak, it tasted much better than any usual. Guess those were the perks of being a bird, he thought, internally giving a satisfied sigh.

Devour ? What kind of skill is that ? Did it just let him eat ?

He hopped excitedly. He didn't even have to kill the prey to get their stats, he just needed to steal the corpse from someone. Another screen popped. Gabriel raised his head, eager for another quest.

[ Quest

Win the Tournament of the Three Major Sects

Time Limit 12 Days

Punishment Death ]

A shudder passed through him. He cursed. Of course, things were just going too well to continue like this. How was a bird supposed to win such a huge tournament ?

The Three Major Sects were the Demonic Sect, the Orthodox Sect and the Unorthodox Sect, the three most reputed sects in the martial arts world. Every six years, those sects made a temporary truce, if he could even call it a truce, to organize a grand tournament for their younger disciples with prizes each better than the last.

But that kind of event would be impossible to win, especially for someone like him. No. He couldn't think like that. Besides, he didn't have a choice, he better win this thing or else he would die, and he would not abandon this second body.

He needed to start killing and eating monster to both use Devour and go up in levels. Gabriel pulled up his status and put all of his stat points into his magic.

The strategy of killing monster was a classic and pretty good, but Gabriel realized how unrealistic it was when he saw his first monster. Monsters had always seemed big to him, but in this new body that was less of a foot tall, gigantic was a better word.

Another idea appeared into his head. Gabriel flew higher until he could easily see the whole forest he was in. He flew north, and soon he saw the castle again.

He sneaked in through a window left ajar. It was easy to hide from prying eyes with the tall ceilings of the corridors. He flew along the wall, the familiar place calming him despite the many bad memories he held.

Ah-ah, he celebrated internally. He had recognized the familiar door of the third princess, one of his half-siblings. She was one of the best martial artists of the empire. He waited patiently for anyone to open the door.

While he was waiting, he went to the shop, remembering a skill he would need for this. He bought the stealth skill and continues lurking near the ceiling.

A maid comes in to clean the room and Gabriel discreetly follows her without any problem. He waited once again near the ceiling until the maid finished cleaning and left. If Gabriel still had a mouth, he would be smirking.

He flew down. Near his sister's bed were a bunch of drawers. Gabriel knew that's where she kept most of her treasures, including martial arts pills. He stuck and shook his sharp talons in the locks. A small click was heard and the drawer slowly opened. His beak buried itself inside her pile of jewelry.

His beak meet a few smooth spheres. Bingo, he thought. Gabriel heard the distinct steps of his sister's from the corridor. He put a bunch of pills in his mouth and started panicking.

Elena could sense people's presence, if she entered, she would for sure know that he wasn't a normal bird.

He flew toward the window. It was locked. He threw himself on the window over and over again in vain. He cursed his small strength stat. The steps kept on getting closer. He tried to put his talons through the glass, that failed too. The windows were magic-immune so no magic missile. He firmly closed his eyes and used the lunge skill.

The glass broke. Shattered pieces of glass buried itself deep in his skin. The door opened, but Gabriel was already flying away. He firmly ignored the pain everywhere in his body.

A warm liquid seemed from his wound ; he was bleeding. He flapped his wings faster, eager to get away and be able to stop flying. He stopped on a tree. His wings slouched, his muscles finally relaxed.

Once the adrenaline had died down, the pain started getting worst. He put down the pills in his mouth in a hole of the tree. His beak went through his feather, removing every bit of glass. Once he was finished he casted heal on himself. A warmth enveloped him. He almost wanted to fall asleep, but he hadn't forgotten that he only had twelve days to become a martial artist that would rival disciples from the Three Major Sects. Not just rival, he corrected himself, but win against them.

He knew every bit of the pills he had managed to steal, and knew all of them were safe to eat.

There were a total of seven pills : three of them were rare body reinforcing pills, three others were rare qi pills and the last one was a bloodline pill.

Qi pills, also called magic pills by mages and people in mage-dominant countries would increase his magic and charm stats, while body reinforcing pills would increase all other stats and finally the bloodline pill would not only increase all his stats, but would also give a bloodline.

The best for last, he thought, keeping the bloodline pill aside. He ate a single qi pill, bracing himself for the pain he knew would come. Gabriel had once stolen and tried a qi pills when he was still human, not only had it not worked, but the pain had been so unbearable he had nearly died.

The pain came in fast, but it was nowhere near as unbearable as he remembered it. He slowly moved, he could still control his body, unlike the first time.

There was even a pleasant feeling after a while. He ate all the other pills, now a bit reassured that he wouldn't have to face the same kind of unbearable pain ; he had been scared he would fall from the trees if he fainted.

He immediately felt a change in his body. Most noticeable of all the changes was the sudden strength.

Gabriel didn't let himself fully experience joy at having a strong body. He was too eager to eat the last pill : the bloodline pill.

Given the pure light emanating from it, it was surely a pill from the orthodox sect.

He turned it over, watching it intently. Legendary pills were supposed to be infinitely more painful than regular pills, especially for bloodline pills who impacted one's very being. Gabriel hold the pill with his peak and flew down from the tree to lie down in a hole hidden by the tree's roots.

This was going to hurt. He bit down on the pill and swallowed it at once. A burning pain erupted in his whole body. His vision darkened. He fainted.
