Chapter 7: The Shadow of War
Skirmishes on the frontiers had intensified. Reports continued to arrive from the outer Rukongai districts and distant patrols: large groups of Hollows were being systematically wiped out without proper purification, their spiritual essence vanishing into the void. There were even confirmed sightings of coordinated Adjuchas-level Hollows operating in packs near the borders, far more organized than typical mindless predation.
When Tobirama Shiba heard the latest intelligence, he understood immediately—the stirrings of a larger conflict were already underway. It had not yet erupted into full-scale war, but the tension was thick in the air. As someone connected to a covert network, he knew far more than most academy instructors. The fragile peace that had held since the old Quincy conflicts and various hollowfication incidents was beginning to fracture once again.
"Those damnable threats from the fringes… Can't they stay quiet for once?" One of the instructors sighed heavily in the office. "It feels like another major conflict is brewing."
"If certain legends of the old Gotei were still at their peak, these incursions wouldn't dare escalate so boldly," another added with clear frustration.
"It'll be alright," a third chimed in. "We still have Captain-Commander Yamamoto and the strength of the Thirteen Court Guard Squads. They've guided us through dark times before."
Tobirama asked the question weighing most on his mind.
"If the situation worsens… will academy instructors be mobilized as well?"
He had no desire to leave the Shin'ō Academy prematurely. His growth relied heavily on the steady rewards and structured environment the teaching role provided. Without them, advancing his reiryoku and techniques would prove far more difficult and dangerous.
"That depends on the scale," the female instructor replied. "For minor skirmishes, probably not. But if it escalates into something serious, some of us with combat specialties might be reassigned to support units or defensive patrols."
Tobirama could only hope—to whatever higher powers governed the cycle of souls—that he would not be called up too soon… or at all. A large-scale war involving Soul Society was never a simple matter. It risked upsetting the delicate balance between the Living World, Hueco Mundo, and the Seireitei, often with ancient schemes and hidden manipulators pulling strings from the shadows.
"I'm not worried about deployment," Tobirama said with a calm smile. "I simply want to be prepared in case I am needed."
He would never openly admit reluctance. That was not something a Shinigami — especially one bearing the name of the once-noble Shiba clan — could voice lightly. He fell silent afterward, practicing measured calligraphy strokes until the bell signaled the start of class. Rising quietly, he made his way toward the first-year classroom.
Peeking through the sliding door, Tobirama noted that the cheerful atmosphere inside remained untouched by the distant rumors of conflict. The young students were still laughing and chatting animatedly.
"Brother! How did the plan go? Did you completely outmaneuver your cousin this time?"
A sigh came in reply. "Don't even mention it… Your idea was solid at first, but my cousin is even craftier. He flipped the whole thing back on me!"
The scheme had initially succeeded—their aunt had delivered a stern scolding. But before the boy could press his advantage, his cousin retaliated with the same tactic. Being close in age, the adults refused to take sides. In the end, both received repeated punishments until they declared a truce and branded the strategy a "forbidden technique" never to be attempted again.
"That level of cunning… I'm speechless," his friend muttered in reluctant admiration. "I've got nothing left to suggest. Your cousin is on another level."
"It's fine. You've already given me plenty of good ideas. How about this—tell me your problem, and I'll return the favor."
The other boy hesitated, then confessed shyly, "There's this girl who lives nearby… I like her, but I don't know how to get closer."
"That's simple," his friend declared confidently. "Just give her something she clearly likes."
The boy thought for a moment. "She always pauses to stare at the flower garden when she walks past. I think she likes flowers… and her family doesn't grow any."
"Then give her flowers! That'll definitely leave an impression."
Before the conversation could continue —
Ahem.
Tobirama coughed twice from the front of the room. Class began immediately. The noisy chatter died down at once, and his calm, clear voice filled the space. Even after only a few days together, the students had warmed to their substitute instructor. His lessons were engaging, easy to follow, and often carried a touch of subtle humor that kept their attention naturally.

[Evaluation: A]
[Reward: Kidō Technique — Bakudō #39: Enkōsen]
As the reward was integrated, detailed knowledge of the defensive Kidō spell flowed seamlessly into Tobirama's mind. Bakudō #39: Enkōsen created a rotating shield of golden reiatsu to block incoming attacks. It was a reliable mid-level technique, excellent for defense and creating openings in combat.
Digging deeper into the granted insights, Tobirama realized something even more valuable: his growing mastery of reiatsu form manipulation allowed him to adapt and strengthen such constructs with far greater efficiency. The system had thoughtfully built upon his existing strengths.
"Well done," he praised inwardly.
After classes ended, Tobirama brought Gin Ichimaru, Rukia Kuchiki, Renji Abarai, and the young prodigy Momo Hinamori to the secluded training spot he had scouted earlier near the gentle stream in the southern woodlands.
"You've all shown decent progress with basic Kidō and Hakuda fundamentals," Tobirama said, arms loosely folded as he regarded the group. His gaze passed over Gin's ever-present smile, Renji's restless energy, Rukia's quiet focus, and Momo's earnest determination. "Today, I'll demonstrate a new technique that builds on those foundations."
He brought his hands together, exhaled steadily, and released a controlled surge of reiatsu. A wide, rotating barrier of shimmering golden energy materialized instantly—Enkōsen, enhanced through his proficiency in reiatsu shape manipulation. The shield spun fluidly, capable of adjusting its angle and density on command.
The students' eyes widened, particularly Momo's and Gin's.
"Watch carefully," Tobirama instructed calmly. "Precision in shape and timing is everything."
He had their complete attention now — and that was precisely what he wanted.
