Chapter 37 - Episode 36

The Kanima sped away from the house. Derek, Stiles, Scott, and Sean quickly followed in pursuit. While Stiles and Scott took the car, Sean was already racing ahead on foot, with Derek right behind him.

The two ran at full speed to catch the Kanima. As Sean closed in and reached out to grab it, he suddenly turned his head. He spotted a figure perched on a distant tree someone dressed in all black, wearing an Oni mask, watching him.

Sean glanced at Derek running behind him and, letting go of the Kanima he was about to catch, abruptly changed direction. Derek looked at Sean in bewilderment; why hadn't Sean caught the creature?

As Sean maneuvered quickly, the figure watching from afar seemed to realize his intent and swiftly retreated. But Sean didn't let them go. He tried to ground his opponent with a vine conjured from his shadow, but the person dodged the attack with unexpected agility, performing a mid-air flip.

Just as the mysterious figure attempted to flee, Sean caught up to them. As Sean lunged to grab his opponent's throat, he saw a metallic glint in the darkness. The rival swung a dagger; Sean shifted into his shadow form to evade the strike and sent them flying into a tree with a powerful kick. Right then, he heard something snap off the opponent's wrist.

Clink...

What fell to the ground was a bracelet made of pearls with a small ceramic flower—something utterly out of place in such a chaotic environment.

Sean's focus wavered for a single second. Just one second... but it was enough for a professional escape. His opponent vanished into the depths of the forest using something like a smoke bomb. As Sean was about to give chase, he froze, staring at the bracelet shimmering at his feet.

He leaned down and picked it up with his gloved hand. The moment his fingers touched that small ceramic flower, the cold forest air of Beacon Hills vanished.

Flashback

My mind split in two. The cold scent of the forest evaporated, replaced by the warmth of the sun and the smell of fresh-cut grass. A second ago, I was brawling with a monster; now, I found myself looking at my own small, slender hands. Were these hands mine? So clean... so innocent?

The shadows around me were no longer weapons, but playmates lying docilely at my feet.

"Wear this," a voice said.

The voice echoed from a room in my soul I never knew existed. I had never seen the little girl standing before me, yet my heart recognized her. I felt a strange, warm ache in my chest—a kind of warmth I had never felt in the darkness of Beacon Hills. As she held out the pearl bracelet, her eyes seemed to hold all the light in the world.

I smiled for no reason. My lips had seemingly forgotten how to move like this, but now they curved on their own.

I took the bracelet; my fingers brushed against the smooth surface of the small ceramic flower. In that moment, through a natural instinct, I released the familiar but not yet tamed energy in my hands. A shadow, dark as smoke, seeped from my fingertips and coiled around the pearls like a vine.

It wasn't frightening; on the contrary, it began to glide gently over the bracelet like a kind and protective armor. As the black shadow moved over the white pearls like living ink, the girl's eyes widened in wonder. As I slipped it back onto her slender wrist, I felt as if I were making the most sacred vow in the universe.

"You don't need to find me," I said. My voice was childish, my tone soft. "My shadows will always protect you and me."

In that moment, I felt for the first time that shadows weren't just darkness—that they were once protective shields for me. But then... the girl's face was veiled by a shadow, the sun faded, and the warmth gave way back to the bone-chilling frost of the forest.

Flashback

The bracelet was still there in Sean's palm, but the dream-like vitality from a moment ago had long since vanished into a bitter silence. The gentle shadow that had just been gliding over the pearls had dissipated with the cold grip of reality. He was back in the relentless darkness of Beacon Hills, and in this darkness, Sean's hands were no longer the hands that touched that little girl's wrist; they were now merely weapons that dealt death and pain.

The young man squeezed his eyes shut, trying to recall that warmth, that little girl, and his "former self" who hadn't yet been sacrificed to the shadows. He gripped the bracelet as if clinging to a lifebuoy. Yet, no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't bring back that peaceful vision of the sun warming his skin.

As the innocent laughter in his mind slowly faded, it was replaced by the cruel howl of the real world: the angry whisper of the wind through the branches and Scott's worried shout echoing from the depths of the forest.

Sean's attention snapped back, and he looked toward the direction of Scott's voice. He was at a parking lot in the distance. Stiles was right beside him. He could see Jackson lying on the ground from afar.

He snapped the bracelet onto his own wrist and moved away from the forest.

Scott and Stiles had hurriedly loaded the unconscious Jackson into the back seat of Stiles's trusty jeep.

Sean approached them with heavy steps. His face still bore the pale, shaken expression left by the past, but the dim lights of the parking lot were enough to mask this vulnerability. His gaze shifted first to Jackson, passed out in the car, and then to Sheriff Noah Stilinski, who appeared right beside them.

When Noah saw Sean, the stern, authoritative expression in his eyes immediately softened. "You again, Sean?" Noah said, his voice lowering slightly. "Every time Scott and Stiles get into trouble, I find you cleaning up after them."

After a brief glance at Jackson's unconscious body, Sean turned his eyes to Noah. He had wiped away the traces of that jarring flashback and put back on his professional mask. He stood tall as he approached Noah.

"You know how they are, Sheriff," Sean said, his voice calm but in that deep tone Noah would understand.

Noah placed a hand on Sean's shoulder a heavy, trust-filled gesture. "If you're here, at least I know someone has their head on straight," he said. Then, lowering his voice so only Sean could hear, he added, "You look pale as a ghost, son."

Sean sighed. "A few things happened, but I'm okay now. Thank you for your concern."

Sheriff Noah then took Stiles aside and spoke with him privately.

Noah grabbed Stiles by the arm and pulled him a few paces away. His expression wasn't just that of a sheriff looking at a suspect; it was the weary gaze of a man who had seen too much, looking at his son with deep concern.

"Stiles, look at me," Noah said. "This is the second crime scene I've run into you tonight. You've told so many lies that I'm not even sure I know you anymore. Now, what the hell is going on?"

Stiles stammered, "Dad... I..."

"Tell me the truth, Stiles!" Noah demanded.

"The truth is... Danny broke up with his boyfriend, and we brought him here to help him clear his head," Stiles blurted out.

Noah sighed, "You guys... you're really great friends. Oh, and also..." His eyes shifted toward Sean.

"Have you seen Sean?" Noah asked, his voice dropping into a tone of profound concern. "When that boy walked out of the woods, it was as if the soul had been ripped out of his body. I've known him for years, Stiles; whenever you and Scott get into trouble, he's always the one standing firm at the front. But today... I've never seen him so shattered."

Noah gripped his son's shoulders tightly.

"If someone like Sean is in this state today, whatever you're facing, it's more than just some high school brawl. I can't expect you to tell me everything, but I'm asking you for one thing..." Noah looked honestly into Stiles's eyes. "Watch his back. Sean looks like he's being crushed under something while trying to protect all of you. Don't leave him alone in this darkness."

Stiles fell silent, struck by how clearly his father had noticed the deep crack in Sean's armor. Even the warning about the "second crime scene" paled in comparison to Sean's condition.

"I know, Dad," Stiles said, his voice turning heavy with seriousness. "We won't leave him alone. I promise."
