Chapter 45 - Chapter 45: Wall of Flame

The courtyard of Castle Black descended into a nightmare of ice and ash. The creature at the gate slammed its frost-covered head against the iron bars with a sound like a hammer hitting a tombstone. It didn't feel pain. It didn't feel fatigue. It only felt the command to kill.

"Move!" Link screamed at the frozen Night's Watch recruits.

He didn't wait for them to recover. Link lunged forward, swinging the heavy iron brazier he had kicked. A spray of glowing orange coals showered the Wight. The moment the heat touched the dead flesh, the creature emitted a sound that wasn't a scream, but a high-pitched hiss of escaping gas. The sapphire light in its eyes flickered as the oil-soaked furs it wore ignited.

"They're just dry wood!" Jaime roared, finally finding his nerve. He grabbed a torch from a wall bracket and thrust it through the bars. "Burn them before they pull the lever!"

But the gate wasn't the only problem. Above them, more shadows were dropping from the top of the Wall. They weren't falling; they were climbing down the ice with unnatural grip, their blue eyes glowing like stars in the midnight air.

"Jon! The oil!" Link shouted, pointing toward the vats used to defend the tunnel.

Jon Snow looked up, his face pale as the snow. "The chains are frozen! We can't tip them!"

"Then we go up," Link said, his mind racing through the System's tactical options. He looked at Jaime. "I need you to hold the tunnel. If they get through that gate, the castle is lost. Jon and I will take the lift."

[New Objective: Clear the Catwalks]

[Risk Level: High]

Link and Jon sprinted toward the iron cage. As they ascended, the sheer scale of the attack became visible. Hundreds of shadows were emerging from the edge of the Haunted Forest. The Night's Watch was being hit by a precise, coordinated strike.

"They aren't mindless," Jon whispered, gripping his sword, Longclaw. "They waited for the storm."

"They waited for us to be comfortable," Link corrected.

As the lift jerked upward, a Wight leaped from the ice face, clinging to the side of the iron cage. Its fingers, stripped of skin, curled around the bars. Link didn't hesitate. He drove his short sword through the creature's throat, but it didn't stop. It reached through the gap, its cold fingers grazing Link's neck.

[Warning: Cold Touch detected - Stamina Siphon active]

Link felt a jolt of freezing lethargy move through his veins. He gritted his teeth, grabbed the Wight's head, and smashed it against the moving gears of the lift. There was a sickening crunch, and the blue light in its eyes went out as the skull was crushed.

"Fire, Jon!" Link panted, shoving the body away. "We need to light the signal fire at the top. If Robert sees it from the King's Road, he'll bring the cavalry."

"He's miles away," Jon said, looking at the distant horizon.

"Then we make sure he sees a sun rising in the North," Link replied.
