Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: The Boar and the Blade

Dawn light touched red spires of the city while the royal hunting party gathered in the courtyard. Horses stamped their hooves against stone and the baying of hounds filled the morning air. Robert Baratheon sat upon a massive black stallion while clutching a wineskin as if it were a scepter.

Link stood in the shadow of the gatehouse. He knew the plan. Lancel Lannister would provide the King with strong wine during the hunt. A massive boar would appear. A drunken King would miss his strike and the Lion would finally have a vacant throne.

"You cannot go My Lord" Link said while stepping into the path of Ned Stark.

Ned was watching the King with a heavy heart. "He has commanded it Link. He refuses to listen to reason. He thinks a hunt will solve the tension of the feast."

"If he enters those woods he does not come back" Link stated flatly.

Ned looked at him with sudden intensity. "You speak with such certainty. How can you know?"

"I have seen the shadows moving" Link replied. "The Queen has already placed the order. The wine is drugged. The beast is merely the executioner."

Link looked at the royal party. Lancel was already handing a fresh flagon to Robert. Link knew a direct approach would get him executed for treason. He needed a distraction.

Link moved toward the stables. He found the crates of hunting spears meant for the Kingsguard. He pulled out his short sword and began to work on the wood of the primary spears. He did not break them. He simply shaved the grain near the heads and applied a thin layer of grease to the shafts.

When the King called for his weapon the wood would feel sturdy but it would snap or slip at the moment of impact.

Load

Link reset. He realized sabotaging the spear might kill Robert even faster. He needed to stop the King from leaving the city entirely.

He looked at the Great Gate. If the gate stayed closed the King stayed safe.

Link ran toward the winch room. Two Gold Cloaks stood guard at the base of the tower. He did not have time for words. He used the pommel of his sword to strike the first guard behind the ear. The second guard reached for a whistle but Link caught his wrist and slammed him into the stone wall.

Link sprinted up the spiral stairs. He reached the massive iron gears that controlled the portcullis. He grabbed a heavy iron bar and jammed it deep into the mechanism.

A sickening crunch of metal echoed through the gatehouse. Below in the courtyard the heavy iron gate dropped three feet and then seized with a violent jolt while locking the exit to the city.

"What in the Seven Hells!" Robert roared from his horse.

The King's horse reared in fright. Chaos erupted as knights scrambled to see what had happened.

Link looked through the slit window. The King was safe for now but the bells were beginning to ring. The City Watch would be at the winch room in seconds.

"I have bought an hour" Link whispered while looking at his trembling hands.

He climbed out the window and onto the outer wall. He needed to find Varys. If the King could not hunt the Lion would find another way to strike. Link needed to turn the King's rage toward the truth before the gears were repaired.
