Chapter 61 - Chapter 61: Practical Matters

The last of winter was loosening its grip on Redstone City.

Wang Ben noticed it in the quality of the light, how morning sun fell through his window without the harsh blue edge of winter. The compound courtyard below had shed its last patches of snow, revealing the first stubborn shoots of green pressing up through dark soil. Birds that had been silent for months filled the air with calls he'd almost forgotten.

A month since his father's breakthrough. A month of quiet work and careful planning. And now, roughly five weeks remained until Shen Ruoxi's nascent soul attempt.

The array design lay spread across his desk, pieces sketched on separate sheets of rice paper in precise lines and annotations. Three overlapping formation circles, each addressing a different category of threat.

It had taken the full month. Cross-referencing Wuyan's fragments against the clan's formation texts. Working through Li Cheng's notebooks, where his maternal grandfather's insights into qi topology gave the System frameworks to analyze.

Sitting with Elder Hongwei over tea, asking questions about resonance patterns and anchor placement that sounded like a student's curiosity but fed the System data it needed to solve problems Wang Ben couldn't articulate out loud. Conversations with the Patriarch about formation philosophy that lasted hours, the ancient cultivator patient with questions whose real purpose he never suspected.

The System had bridged what no single source could reach alone. But the pieces had come from everywhere.

The design itself wasn't what worried him anymore. It was the material list.

The System's requirements used classifications Wang Ben had never encountered in any text or lecture. Components that needed to hold stable during soul projection. Anchor points for a space that didn't follow physical rules he understood. Materials that could interact with spiritual energy at frequencies the Archive described but couldn't name in any language this world used.

The design specified properties. Not materials. The gap between "what it needs to do" and "what exists that can do it" was something Wang Ben couldn't bridge alone.

Wang Ben set down his brush and rubbed his eyes. The formation was ready. Finding something to build it with was beyond anything the clan's library or his conversations with the elders could answer.

But he knew someone who might have spent decades collecting exactly the kinds of materials the design required.

...

The Quiet Cup looked the same as it always did. Wang Ben arrived just before midday.

Wuyan was waiting at his usual table. He looked up as Wang Ben entered with the mild smile of a man who already knew why he was here.

"Senior Shen." Wang Ben bowed and took the seat across from him. "The design for your estate's breakthrough formation is ready."

He produced the scrolls and spread them across the table.

"The traditional breakthrough formations focus on qi stabilization," he began. "They assume the threat is internal. But the pattern you observed, failures clustering at the moment of soul separation, suggests something external."

Wuyan said nothing. He was already reading the diagrams, his eyes moving across the formation lines with the practiced ease of someone who had studied arrays for longer than most sects had existed.

"Three defensive layers," Wang Ben continued. "Reality anchors to prevent disorientation. Soul boundary definition to resist consumption. Signature concealment to avoid detection." He paused. "The problem is the materials. The design requires components with specific properties, and I haven't been able to identify what fits."

Wuyan studied the requirements in silence. Then something shifted in his expression. Not surprise. Recognition.

"The anchor layer." His finger traced the specifications. "What you're describing is void-touched obsidian. It's not native to this world. Fragments are sometimes found at impact sites, places where something fell from beyond the sky. Extremely rare."

He moved to the second layer. "This boundary definition... items with soul affinity would fit. Soul-affinity jade passes through the Jade Spring city auctions sometimes." He was quiet for a moment. "But there aren't many materials at the grade we'd need. Soul resources get stockpiled by cultivators at my level or above. They don't circulate freely."

He paused at the third layer, reading more carefully.

"And this. Signature concealment at this level of throughput." He was quiet for a moment. "Shadow-drinking crystal. It forms deep underground in places saturated with dark qi, usually near the territories of yin-aspected beasts. The crystal absorbs spiritual emissions rather than reflecting them."

Wuyan sat back and produced a spirit stone pouch from his ring. "Five thousand mid-grade spirit stones. Out of the three, I know where to source the void-touched obsidian. I'll handle that." He set the pouch on the table. "The soul-affinity jade and shadow-drinking crystal fall to you and the Wang Clan."

Wang Ben took the pouch, then hesitated. "Senior Shen, wouldn't it make more sense for you to source the jade and crystal as well? You have more experience with these materials than anyone in Redstone City. My clan can handle the standard construction components."

Wuyan's smile didn't waver. "The void-touched obsidian requires contacts outside this kingdom. That, I can do." He turned his teacup. "I don't believe your clan will have trouble acquiring the rest. Not with five thousand mid-grade spirit stones to smooth the way. That should be more than enough to get everything your design requires."

Wang Ben tucked the pouch into his robes.

Wuyan rolled the scrolls carefully and returned them. "I'll have the estate prepared for construction. Once you've gathered the materials, bring your clan's best and begin." He lifted his tea. "The timeline is tight."

...

He spent the rest of the morning in the merchant district. Every vendor told the same story.

"Soul-affinity jade? The Jade Spring auctions haven't run in months due to the trade routes coming from the west declining."

"Shadow-drinking crystal? The expedition companies that used to bring it back from the deep Blackwood have all been contracted to the western front. Nobody's running private harvests anymore."

Every source he tried was blocked.

He thought about the Blackwood Forest. The expedition he'd survived months ago had ventured only into the outer reaches, where the strongest beasts were rank three or four. The deep Blackwood, where shadow-drinking crystal formed in caves untouched by light, was territory that killed core formation cultivators.

But there might be another way.

Wang Ben turned toward the southern edge of the merchant district, where the guild offices clustered around a central plaza. The Redstone Material Exchange maintained a registry of incoming shipments, a public record of what resources were expected and when. If someone else had contracted for shadow-drinking crystal, he might be able to negotiate a purchase.

The registry clerk was an older woman with the precise bearing of someone who'd spent decades cataloging other people's wealth. She looked up as Wang Ben approached, recognition flickering across her features.

"Wang Clan, yes?" She glanced at the emblem on his robes. "How can I help you?"

"I'm looking for shadow-drinking crystal. Any shipments expected in the next couple of months?"

The clerk consulted her records, fingers tracing columns of characters. "Three contracts on file. Two are military allocations, sealed by kingdom authority. The third..." She paused, reading more closely. "The third is private. A merchant house from the domain capital."

"Which house?"

"Crimson Sky Trading. They have a contract for forty pieces of shadow-drinking crystal, arriving in five weeks from a deep Blackwood expedition."

Five weeks. That would leave barely a week for construction. But it was better than nothing.

"How do I contact them?"

"Their local representative is Master Qian Weishan. He maintains offices near the western gate." The clerk paused. "I should mention that Crimson Sky Trading can be... selective about who they deal with."

"I'll keep that in mind."

Wang Ben left the registry with a name and an address. Selective about who they deal with. A qi condensation teenager walking into their offices alone wouldn't get past the front door. But a foundation establishment alchemist with a clan name behind him might be a different conversation.

He turned toward the compound.

...

His father was at the workbench, a gentle blue glow emanating from the cauldron. The pill formation completed as Wang Ben entered, and Wang Tian lifted a perfect sphere of condensed medicine. Grade seven. He set it aside.

"How did it go?"

Wang Ben sat on the bench across from him. "He approved the design. Most of the construction materials are standard, nothing the clan can't handle. But three components were beyond what anyone here could identify. He recommended materials that would work at the grade we're building. Void-touched obsidian for the reality anchors. Soul-affinity jade for the boundary layer that protects during projection. And shadow-drinking crystal for the concealment array."

Wang Tian's eyebrows rose slightly at the names but he said nothing.

"He also gave me five thousand mid-grade spirit stones and said he'd handle the obsidian himself." Wang Ben met his father's eyes. "The jade and crystal fall to us."

"I spent the afternoon searching," Wang Ben said. "Wuyan said that we could get the jade through Jade Spring auctions, but those haven't run since the western trade routes collapsed. The crystal comes from the deep Blackwood, but every expedition company is contracted to the war effort." He paused. "The one lead I found is a merchant house called Crimson Sky Trading. They have a shipment of shadow-drinking crystal arriving in five weeks."

"Crimson Sky." Wang Tian's expression shifted. "They're domain capital merchants. They won't negotiate with just anyone."

"I know."

His father studied him, then a faint smile crossed his face. "You need someone with a name they'll respect at the table."

Wang Ben didn't deny it.

Wang Tian was quiet for a moment. Then he nodded. "I'll come with you. When?"

"As soon as possible." Wang Ben paused. "There's more. The construction will need alchemical components. Binding solutions for the jade, preservation compounds for the crystal. I'll need your help with those."

"I'll take a look and prepare what's needed." Wang Tian gripped his arm briefly. "Let me send word to Crimson Sky tonight. We'll go together in the morning."

...

By evening, Wang Ben was in the training courtyard, running through sword forms.

"You're distracted."

Zhao Yu crossed the courtyard toward him, carrying himself with a coiled energy that hadn't been there a month ago.

"A lot on my mind."

"I've noticed." Zhao Yu fell into position beside him, matching his form. "You've been buried in formation work all month. We barely even get to go hunting in the Blackwood anymore."

"I know. It's been busy."

Zhao Yu didn't push further. They trained in silence for a while before he spoke again.

"I should tell you something." Zhao Yu's rhythm shifted, his strikes coming slower. "I think I'm close to a breakthrough. I've been going out with the patrol teams since you've been busy, and the fighting... something's been changing. My body refinement feels complete in a way it didn't before."

"To qi condensation?"

"I think so. Everything feels aligned, like it's waiting for something." He was quiet for a stroke. "It's happening faster than I expected."

Wang Ben looked at his friend. It had been a while since they'd trained this close, and his spiritual sense was picking up something it hadn't before. A quality in Zhao Yu's presence that was hard to define. The same thing he'd glimpsed during the Ironmaw wolf fight, but stronger now. Not speed, not strength. Something else entirely.

"When will you attempt it?"

Zhao Yu was quiet for a moment. "I don't think it's something I can plan. It's not like sitting down and meditating until something happens." He rolled his sword wrist, testing the weight. "I think it'll come in the middle of a fight. When I stop thinking and just move." He looked at Wang Ben. "That's when everything feels closest."
