'I can tell that!' Percy screamed internally, fighting the urge to bolt out of his chair. He wiped the red warning box away with a trembling hand.
He forced himself to look at Mrs. Dodds. She was staring right at him, her eyes like black coals, her smile sharp enough to cut glass. He swallowed hard, focused his mind, and issued the mental command.
'Observe.'

[Bio: Alecto is one of the three Furies, the torturers of the Underworld, serving directly under Hades. She has been deployed to Yancy Academy to observe Perseus Jackson. Mission: Determine if the subject is a demigod offspring of Poseidon or Zeus. If confirmed: Kill on sight.]
Oh fuck. Oh fuck. Oh fuck.
Percy's heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. Level 49? She had nearly five thousand health points. He had two hundred. She could snap him in half like a dry twig.
He spent the rest of the class staring fixedly at his textbook, terrified that if he made eye contact, she would see the "Son of Poseidon" title floating above his head and turn him into a smear on the chalkboard. Gamer's Mind was the only thing keeping him from hyperventilating, forcing his body to remain calm even as his thoughts raced at a hundred miles an hour.
I need to get stronger. I need to get stronger now.
As soon as the final bell rang, Percy bolted. He didn't go to dinner. He didn't hang out with Grover. He went straight to the library.
He grabbed a stack of books and sat in the furthest corner, reading with a manic intensity. Fear, it turned out, was an incredible motivator. The words that usually floated off the page seemed to anchor themselves under the weight of his terror. He wasn't reading for fun; he was reading for survival.
By the time the librarian announced closing time, Percy's eyes were burning, but the results were undeniable.
'Ding!'

He packed his bag, frustration gnawing at him. It wasn't enough. He needed more stats. He needed more INT, more WIS—anything that might give him an edge against a Level 49 monster.
As he walked toward the exit, a notification blocked his path.

[YES / NO]
Percy gulped. Sneaking out was dangerous, but facing Mrs. Dodds as a Level 4 weakling was suicide. He pressed 'YES'.
...
That night, around 10:00 PM, Grover finally passed out, his snores rattling the bunk bed frame. Percy slipped out from under his covers, dressed in dark clothes. He opened the window, climbed onto the ledge, and dropped silently to the soft grass of the first floor.
He moved toward the library, sticking to the shadows of the courtyard columns. The air was cold, and the fountain in the center bubbled softly.
Suddenly, voices drifted through the night air. Percy froze, diving behind a row of manicured hedges. He crawled on his stomach, the wet grass soaking his shirt, until he had a view of the fountain.
Mrs. Dodds was there. But she wasn't wearing her leather jacket. In fact, she looked… taller. Shadowy. Standing opposite her was Mr. Brunner.
'Ding!'
[Sneaking - LVL 3 (9%):]
[- 20% chance to remain undetected.]
[- 20% critical strike chance.]
Percy swiped the box away, straining to hear.
"The boy is innocent, Alecto," Mr. Brunner said, his voice deep and stern. It wasn't the voice of a crippled Latin teacher; it was the voice of a commander.
"My orders are absolute, Chiron," Mrs. Dodds—Alecto—hissed. The sound was like steam escaping a pipe. "If the boy is the spawn of Poseidon, I will end him."
"I will not stand by while you murder a child," Mr. Brunner warned.
"Innocent? That thief?" Alecto spat, her voice dripping with venom. "The boy stole from my Master! He stole from Zeus himself!"
What? Percy's mind reeled. I didn't steal anything! I've never even met Zeus!
"The boy has done no such thing!" Chiron roared. He wheeled his chair forward, and for a second, Percy swore he saw the shadow of a horse's flank flicker behind him. "And if you dare harm one of my students, you will face my full wrath."
Alecto laughed, a screeching sound that made Percy's teeth ache. "Ha! What wrath? You are nothing but a washed-up trainer of dead heroes!"
Suddenly, the air grew heavy. A wave of pure, unfiltered killing intent washed over the courtyard. It was suffocating, heavy as lead.
'Ding! Ding! Ding!'
[Detect Bloodlust has leveled up to LVL 4 (90%)!]
[Range: 30 feet.]
Wow, Percy thought, shivering. Mr. Brunner isn't playing around.
Alecto actually stepped back, coughing as if she had inhaled smoke. "Very well, Chiron. I will not attack the boy… tonight. But if he reveals his true nature, have a shroud ready. I will tear him apart."
Percy watched in horror as his math teacher's clothes melted away. Leathery wings burst from her back, and her hands curled into razor-sharp talons. She shrieked once, transforming into a monstrous, bat-like hag, and launched herself into the night sky.
Mr. Brunner sat there for a moment longer, looking old and weary, before turning his wheelchair and rolling back toward the faculty housing.
Percy let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. He was safe. Mr. Brunner—Chiron—had his back.
He waited for a minute, then crept forward, keeping low. The library was just across the courtyard. He was halfway there when the red box flashed in his vision.
[BLOODLUST DETECTED!]
[Origin: Above!]
Shit!
Percy didn't think; he rolled. He threw himself to the right just as a blur of black leather and claws slammed into the spot where he had been standing a split second ago. Sparks flew as talons raked against the cobblestones.
Alecto screeched, turning her hideous face toward him. "I can smell you, little demigod!" she hissed. "You reek of the sea!"
How did she know? Percy scrambled backward, his mind racing. She promised Chiron she wouldn't attack!
"Accidents happen in the dark," Alecto cackled, answering his unspoken thought. She crouched, wings spreading wide, blocking out the moon.
Percy was cornered. He had no weapon. His water control was too weak to hurt a Level 49 monster. If he tried to run, she would catch him in seconds.
He opened his inventory. Empty, except for pancakes and… a cheap, plastic ballpoint pen.
He grabbed the pen. Great. I'm going to die holding a Bic.
He looked at the library, then back at the monster. He needed an edge. He needed stats. He looked at the fountain bubbling ten feet away.
Son of Poseidon. It only worked in water. Or if he was wet.
Alecto lunged.
Percy didn't dodge. Instead, he threw his hands up, reaching out with his mind not at the monster, but at the fountain. "COME ON!"
He yanked the water with every ounce of mana he had. A massive glob of water, gallons of it, erupted from the basin and crashed down directly on top of Percy.
SPLASH!
Alecto faltered for a microsecond, confused by the sudden shower.
'Ding!'
[Buff Active: Son of Poseidon]

Power surged through Percy's veins. The cold water didn't feel cold; it felt like liquid energy. His senses sharpened. The world seemed to slow down.
Alecto was on him. She swiped a massive claw at his head.
Percy moved.
With 25 Dexterity, he was faster than any mortal human. He twisted his body, but not quite fast enough. The tip of her talon tore through his sleeve, raking three deep gashes across his left bicep.
Percy gritted his teeth against the searing pain, but he didn't stop. He used the momentum of his dodge to step in.
With 22 Strength, he drove his right hand forward in a blur. He gripped the cheap pen like a dagger and slammed it into the side of the Fury's neck.
SHUNK.
"SCREEEE!"
Alecto shrieked in shock and pain. The plastic didn't do much damage, but the force of the blow, enhanced by his demigod strength, stunned her. She flapped her wings frantically, kicking Percy in the chest and sending him skidding back across the wet pavement.
She took to the air, clutching her neck where a small trickle of golden ichor oozed out. She hovered there, glaring down at him with hate-filled eyes.
"You bear the mark now," she hissed, eyeing the bleeding wound on his arm. "I will know you tomorrow, boy. There is nowhere to hide."
With a final, ear-splitting screech, she flew off into the darkness, leaving Percy alone, drenched, and bleeding in the courtyard.
