Chapter 18 - Chapter 18:Ups and downs

Two weeks had passed since the chaos at school, but the storm was far from over for Isabella.

She walked slowly up the path to her house, the weight of the day heavy on her shoulders. The sun had long dipped below the horizon, and the streetlights cast long shadows over the pavement. As she neared her front yard, a sleek black car caught her eye — Ash's car, parked right outside her gate.

"What is he doing here?" Isabella muttered under her breath, her heart tightening.

From the porch, she saw her father standing stiffly, shaking hands with Ash. The sight sent a cold wave through her. Ash smiled slyly, the kind of smile that made her skin crawl. Her father nodded approvingly.

As Ash got into his car and drove off, Isabella hesitated on the stoop, her thoughts racing. Finally, she pushed open the door and stepped inside.

"Dad, what was that about?" she asked, voice cautious.

Before her father could answer, his hand shot out and slapped her sharply across the face. The sound echoed harshly through the room.

"You did what?" he spat, eyes blazing with fury. "You—helped that broke boy? Do you really think you have the right to disrespect this family?"

Isabella's eyes stung, tears welling up as the sting of both his hand and his words sank deep.

"I—I was just trying to help him," she managed, her voice barely a whisper.

Her mother stepped in, a worried look creasing her face. "Honey, please calm down…"

But her father cut her off with a glare sharp enough to silence her.

"Stay out of this, woman. This is between me and my daughter."

Turning back to Isabella, his voice was cold and final.

"Get out of my house. You're grounded. No friends. No phone. No life outside these walls."

Isabella's legs trembled as she stumbled back toward the door.

"Dad, please," she pleaded, but he was already turning away.

As she opened the door, she heard one last chilling command.

"Come back when you remember who you are — Isabella Valdes."

The door slammed behind her like the closing of a coffin.

Standing outside in the chill night air, Isabella wrapped her arms around herself, fighting back tears. Her phone felt heavy in her hand. She dialed Simon's number, her voice breaking as she spoke.

"Simon… it's Isabella. I— I got kicked out. I don't have anywhere to go. Can you help me?"

The line was silent for a moment, then Simon's calm, steady voice came through.

"Don't worry. I'll book you a room for a few days. You're not alone."

Two days later, the detention center was cold and unwelcoming. But when Simon and Isabella saw Theo behind the glass, the harshness of the place softened in their eyes.

Isabella's voice cracked as she told Theo about her father's rejection.

"My dad… he threw me out. Said I wasn't worthy of the family name anymore."

Theo's eyes darkened with concern.

"You can stay at my apartment," he said quietly. "I'm not using it right now."

Simon nodded approvingly. "Good idea. How's the place, really?"

Theo shrugged with a half-smile.

"Cramped and messy, but free food and no interruptions. Beats a jail cell."

Laughter broke the tension.

As they stood to leave, Theo's expression turned serious.

"Simon, I need a favor."

"Anything, man."

"I can't win the competition now. I want to borrow five hundred dollars."

Simon didn't hesitate.

"No problem."

Theo's voice softened.

"Send it to my little sister, Lilly. Tell her to surprise the folks."

Isabella and Simon exchanged a glance — the weight of Theo's request settling on them.

Simon smiled.

"I've got you. Consider it done."

Theo handed Simon the details: where to find his phone in the apartment, and the password.

Back at the apartment, Simon and Isabella set to work cleaning up the small space. Dusting off neglected shelves, sweeping floors, and opening windows to let fresh air in. The cluttered chaos mirrored the turmoil in their hearts.

Once the place was tidied, Simon pulled out his phone and sent the money.

"$3,000 sent," he said quietly, adding a message:

"Surprise the folks, Lil Sis."

Miles away, Lilly sat on her bed, staring at her phone. Her fingers trembled as she read the unexpected message. Tears rolled down her cheeks, a mix of relief and hope flooding her.

She whispered, barely audible, "Thank you…"

Isabella watched Simon put his phone away and sighed softly.

"This is more than money. It's hope."

Simon nodded.

"We'll get through this. Together."

Theo's voice echoed in their minds — the promise of resilience, of fighting back.

In the dim light of the apartment, despite everything, a fragile light flickered — the unspoken vow that none of them would give up.
