Chapter 4 - the continent

Names mattered in this world.

They were spoken carefully, written sparingly, and remembered long after the people themselves were gone.

The book rested open on the table as the oil lamp flickered beside it. Neil's father had marked several pages with faded ink—symbols of interest, warnings, and reverence.

At the very top of the chapter was a single sentence, written in heavier script than the rest.

"All crowns exist beneath a higher will."

Kyomu read on.

The High Kingdom of Ardentis

Ardentis was ruled by King Altheryn Valecrown, the Ninth of his name.

He was described not as a warrior or conqueror, but as a preserver of order. Altheryn rarely appeared in public, yet his decisions shaped lives far beyond his capital.

The book noted something strange.

"King Altheryn is said to age slower than other men, though no explanation is given."

Kyomu paused.

Not immortality.

But not ordinary either.

The Frostbound Dominion of Skell

Skell was governed by Queen Ylsa Morvain, called The Winter Matron.

She ruled from a citadel carved into the mountains themselves, and legends claimed she had never left her domain—not once in decades.

The text described her eyes as "clear as frozen glass" and said she could silence an entire court with a glance.

"Her presence alone is said to still the air."

Kyomu felt a faint chill as he turned the page.

The Verdant Accord

The Verdant Accord did not bow to a single crown, but its voice was unified through one figure:

Archwarden Selune Aerith, Keeper of the Living Record.

Selune was neither king nor queen, but something older—a living symbol of continuity. The book claimed Selune had served the Accord for over a century.

Not ruled.

Served.

"They remember what the world tries to forget."

Kyomu frowned.

How could one person live that long?

The Sovereign Sands of Kael

Kael was ruled by Emperor Zahruun the Gilded, a man whose wealth was said to rival nations.

The book did not praise him.

It described him as calculating, patient, and frighteningly calm.

"Zahruun does not rush. Time bends around those who can afford to wait."

Kyomu closed his eyes briefly.

Power came in many forms.

The Obsidian Principality of Noxvale

No single ruler was listed.

Instead, the page bore a single title:

The Veiled Regent

No name.

No face.

No age.

Only this line:

"When the Veiled Regent speaks, rulers listen—whether they know it or not."

Kyomu swallowed.

At the end of the chapter, the text grew quiet. Reverent. Careful.

The final section was not labeled a kingdom.

It was labeled Authority Beyond Crowns.

The One Who Rules Them All

No true name was given.

Only a title.

The Eternal Arbiter

The book described the Arbiter not as a king, not as a god—but as a being who stood above rule itself.

They did not govern directly.

They did not sit upon a throne.

Yet every ruler acknowledged their existence.

"When the Arbiter appears, history changes."

Kyomu's fingers tightened on the page.

The Arbiter was said to possess abilities that defied reason—unchanging form, ageless presence, and a voice that compelled truth itself.

No kingdom claimed them.

No land housed them.

They appeared only when the balance of the continent was threatened.

And when they vanished—

No one knew where they went.

Kyomu closed the book slowly.

"So this world isn't ruled by crowns alone," he murmured.

Kings.

Queens.

Wardens.

Regents.

And above them all—

Something watching.

Something waiting.

Outside, the night deepened, stars stretching across a sky Kyomu had never seen before.

Somewhere in that vast world, names carried weight far heavier than steel.
