Chapter 5 - ch 5 The weight of sorrow : A brother's legacy

Duke Harlan stood atop the highest tower of Erin Hall, the wind whirling around him like a living thing. The stars twinkled above, a cold, unforgiving canopy. He gazed out at the darkness, his eyes burning with a mixture of sorrow and regret.

"Claude, my friend, my comrade ...I did not want it to end this way," Duke Harlan whispered, his voice carried away by the wind. "I gave you every chance, every opportunity to redeem yourself. But you chose the shadows, and they consumed you. I had to be the one to stop you, to end the threat you had become."

He paused, his shoulders sagging beneath his cloak. "And now, Cyrin...Cyrin, who looked up to you, who admired you...what have I done to him? I've made him an orphan, taken his brother from him. Can he ever forgive me?"

The wind howled, a mournful sound, as if echoing Duke Harlan's pain. He stood there, lost in his thoughts, until he heard a faint rustling behind him.

"Cyrin?" he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Cyrin Darkfire emerged from the shadows, his eyes red-rimmed, his face pale. "I heard you, Duke Harlan," he said, his voice low and even. "I heard what you said about Claude, about me."

Duke Harlan turned to face him, a mixture of guilt and sorrow on his face. "Cyrin, I..."

Cyrin raised a hand, his eyes burning with a quiet intensity. "No, Duke Harlan. I want to talk to you about Claude. About what really happened."

Duke Harlan nodded, a heavy heart weighing him down. "Of course, Cyrin. I'll tell you everything."

Cyrin's eyes seemed to bore into his very soul, as if searching for something. "I want to know the truth, Duke Harlan. I want to know what drove my brother to betray us, and what led to his downfall."

Duke Harlan took a deep breath, the weight of his responsibilities settling upon him once more. "Very well, Cyrin. I'll tell you everything I know."

Duke Harlan's eyes took on a nostalgic quality as he gazed at Cyrin. "You know, Cyrin, I've known you since you were a young knight, barely 15 years old. I saw something in you, a spark of potential that I wanted to fan into flames."

Cyrin's eyes widened, surprise etched on his face. "You recruited me, Duke Harlan?"

Duke Harlan nodded, a smile on his face. "I did. You were a raw talent, untrained and untested, but I saw the potential for greatness in you. I took you under my wing, taught you how to harness your blessings, how to control your flames, and how to wield your sword with precision."

Cyrin's eyes dropped, a mix of emotions swirling on his face. "I...I didn't know that, Duke Harlan."

Duke Harlan's expression turned thoughtful. "Do you think the harlen flame knights would enlist a young knight without any connections, without any word of warning? I knew you had potential, Cyrin, and I wanted to shape that potential into something remarkable."

Cyrin's thoughts wandered back to his brother, Claude, and the memories they had shared as children. He remembered the laughter, the adventures, and the camaraderie they had shared. But those memories were now tainted by the darkness that had consumed Claude, leading him down a path of destruction and ultimately, to his demise.

As he sat with Duke Harlan, Cyrin couldn't help but wonder if Claude had been entirely himself when he faced the Duke. Had he been brainwashed, manipulated by the shadows that had corrupted him? The thought sent a pang through Cyrin's chest, a mix of sorrow and anger.

Duke Harlan seemed to sense Cyrin's turmoil, his eyes filled with understanding. "Cyrin, I want you to know that I don't blame you for Claude's actions. He made his own choices, and I respect that. But I also know that you have a unique perspective on this, and I value your insight."

Cyrin nodded, his voice barely above a whisper. "I think...I think he might have been brainwashed, Duke Harlan. I don't know what they did to him, but he wasn't the same person I grew up with."

Duke Harlan's expression was somber. "I'm sorry, Cyrin. I truly am. But I want you to know that I'm here for you, no matter what. We'll get through this together, and we'll make sure that those responsible are held accountable."

Cyrin's eyes locked onto Duke Harlan's, a sense of gratitude and loyalty swelling in his chest. "Thank you, Duke Harlan. That means a lot to me. And...I want you to know that although you were the one who...who ended Claude's life, I don't blame you for it. He was my brother, and I loved him, but he wasn't the same person I knew. You did what you had to do to protect Ardentia, and I respect that."

Duke Harlan's expression softened, his eyes filled with a deep sadness. "Thank you, Cyrin. That means a great deal to me. I didn't want to be the one to take his life, but I had no choice. I'm glad you can see that."

Cyrin's eyes snapped up, a hint of curiosity in his voice. "You think the shadows are involved in this? That they might have been the ones who...who corrupted Claude?"

Duke Harlan's expression grew serious. "I don't think it's a coincidence, Cyrin. The shadows have been spreading their influence, corrupting those who are vulnerable. And Claude...he was vulnerable, Cyrin. He was always drawn to the shadows, even when he tried to fight it."

Cyrin's jaw clided, his eyes narrowing. "I'll make them pay, Duke Harlan. I'll make them pay for what they did to Claude, and for what they're doing to Ardentia."

Duke Harlan's eyes burned with a fierce intensity. "We'll make them pay, Cyrin. Together, we'll bring the shadows to their knees."
