She led him into a room filled with hundreds of Poké Balls arranged neatly on shelves.
"Please draw two Pokémon."
Even though Joy was a fan, she did not show any bias during the assessment. She maintained strict professional standards. Austin Black's Identification Eye did not work on sealed Poké Balls, so he chose randomly.
"Come out."
Two Pokémon appeared.
One was a Flareon, its cream-colored tuft and thick fur glowing under the light.
The other was a Staraptor, sharp-eyed and tense, its feathers sleek and battle-ready.
Both were Bronze (Advanced) level.
This was the typical strength range for examiner Pokémon.

"Go, Roserade!"
From a type perspective, Flareon held a natural advantage over Roserade, a Grass and Poison-type.
However, Roserade's strength exceeded expectations. It had reached Silver (Initial), slightly above Flareon.
Its ability, Natural Cure, allowed it to recover from status conditions upon switching out.
This meant burn effects from Will-O-Wisp would not decide the match.
Hmm, Flareon. The young man got a favorable draw.
The examiner, Hanzo Akihiko, gave the first command immediately.
"Roserade, Toxic Spikes."
Roserade spun gracefully, scattering purple toxic particles across the battlefield. The ground was quickly covered in hazardous spikes that would poison any Pokémon switching in.
Austin assessed the situation calmly in seconds.
Flareon could use Baton Pass, but Calm Mind would not benefit Staraptor much later. Flame Charge was the only consistent acceleration option.
"Flame Wheel."
Before Roserade could fully stabilize its setup, Flareon burst forward, engulfed in flames, and slammed directly into it.
The impact disrupted Roserade's rhythm, burning its petals.
The spectator whispered in excitement, "It landed."
Hanzo did not panic.
"Magical Leaf."
Countless glowing leaves filled the air, spreading in a wide tracking pattern with near guaranteed accuracy.
Austin countered.
"Copycat."
Both streams of Magical Leaf collided midair, detonating into a burst of energy.
Roserade's output was still slightly stronger, and several leaves slipped through.
Flareon took minor damage, but Grass-type attacks were naturally resisted.
"Roserade, Synthesis."
Sunlight streamed through the transparent ceiling, accelerating Roserade's recovery.
"Flame Charge."
Flareon surged forward again, flames wrapping its body as it closed the distance at high speed.
The collision landed cleanly.
When the smoke cleared, Roserade had already lost its ability to continue battling.
Hanzo frowned slightly.
That is strange. Flareon's move power seems higher than normal.
